Lt. Col. George Custer and some 90 soldiers on a railroad survey barely avoided a fatal ambush on the Yellowstone River opposite present-day Miles City. Sioux warriors lured the soldiers toward a grove of timber, where some 300 Indians charged. The soldiers regrouped and held off the Sioux in a four-hour stand.
