Custer County in 1878
In the January 1, 1880 issue of the Yellowstone Journal, there appears a report of the Territorial Treasurer for Montana for the year 1878, with some interesting figures concerning Custer County. This report states that during the year 1878, there were three births and no deaths in the county--the county industries were reported as follows: there were 12 acres of wheat planted with a yield of 430 bushels; 164 acres of oats planted with a yield of 6835 bushels; one half acre of rutubagas, with a yield of 7500 pounds. In the county during 1878 there were 119 milch cows, with a yield of 10,980 pounds of butter and cheese; 1200 sheep produced 7500 pounds of wool; 6 acres of onions produced 160 bushels and one sawmill sawed 75,000 feet of lumber. Following the above report, there is this editorial comment: "These figures are a pretty tame showing compared with the developments and results of the season of 1879."
