Diaper Cakes?

First, before I say anything else, I want to assure Lori (proprietress of the Diaper Cakes store) that I wish her nothing but good luck with her business and I'm posting this under the old adage that there is no such thing as "bad publicity" - hopefully this thread will increase your visibility AND your sales.

That said, I have to wonder: What in the world is a "Diaper Cake" and why in Sam Hill would anyone want one? (I obviously agree with Wendy on the "sam hill" thing)

When the words "diaper cakes" showed up on MC.com back in early April, I thought it was a euphemism akin to "cow patty" or "turd blossom". It instantly killed any craving I might have had for something sweet, especially anything with icing. The picture that formed in my mind was a vision I would have happily lived my entire life without seeing.

Now, nearly two months later, I happened to spot the words "diaper cakes" again and once again they evoked the very same, VERY strong reaction. Then it occured to me that nobody on MC.com has commented in any way, shape or form about the term. So I'm wondering:

Am I the only person who suffers a visceral reaction to the thought of a DIAPER CAKE

Hmmm, T Brown. You may be right, but I think it's too early to say with any certainty yet. We'll see....

I don't think you have to worry about the diaper cake. You should really worry about the DIRTY diaper cake.

I had the same thought, Steve--it's ok! LOL I actually was curious enough to log into her website one day and they're actually a cute idea; if they're a big hit or not, I don't know, but a cute concept anyway.

It's made out of clean diapers rolled and put into a cake shape with baby stuff tucked in among the folds....Anyone who has had a baby soon realizes the biggest hassle and expense of a baby tends to be the "diaper" situation, so a gift of about 30 of them (presented in a cute fashion) would probably be a hit....especailly for the 2nd child.... (a person with no kids would not understand, so get back to us after your first kid, lol!)

I know nothing about this business as well, but definitely see how it would make a nice gift ;-)

Speaking as a Grandma, it is a perfect gift for a baby shower! Use it as the centerpiece on the serving table! Moms everywhere will appreciate it. Dads will learn to.

Hey TK - thanks. I was beginning to feel rather exposed and all alone there for a moment.

I'm happy to see that this did, indeed, turn into a wonderful "word of mouth" advertising venue for Lori's business.

And I thought quite a bit about Kelly's comment, trying to understand why I automatically assumed a diaper cake would be composed of dirty ones. This is what I came up with.

As I was growing up, and even more recently listening my parenting friends, I recall hearing the words, "Oh, time to change the baby's diaper" and "Oh, the baby needs a clean diaper" and "Oh My God - What did you DO to that diaper?" and "Ooops - time for a new diaper!" It occurs to me that when the word "diaper" appeared in a sentence all alone, it was assumed to be dirty.

On the other hand, if one was talking about an unsoiled diaper, it was always declared to be so by a preceding adjective (e.g.; clean diaper, new diaper, fresh diaper, etc.). So, when I heard the term "diaper cake" - well, I guess I just naturally pictured a diaper "caked" with baby byproducts.

And yes, I've had a bit too much time on my hands this evening...

Steve - I've been saving Duncan's attempts at pastries for you. I've got a couple of weeks' worth in a box ready to go. All I need is your address ...
