Home improvement question..need help!
Posted by CK (+849) 14 years ago
Not sure if this is the place to ask for help, but I am trying to remove corkboard (that you would stick a pin in to hang up pictures) that is over pegboard from the wall in my kitchen. The corkboard was water damaged and bubbly in some places that is why I started to take it apart. The pegboard underneath is bright orange and that doesn't go with my theme in the kitchen.

I have gotten some off, but it is really glued on there in some places. I have tried water, a scraper, and a blow drier, and my puny strength....anyone else have any ideas on how to remove it?

Help please,

Carli

Get a bigger hammer.

It's my solution to every technical problem. I'm not saying it's a good solution, but it's what I do.

Great suggestion, I think I will try that on my cell phone too!

My solution was originally designed for cell phones.

A big tube of "Goo Off"? Might have to work it in but little by little that stuff takes anything apart.

A heat gun gets hotter than a blow dryer but must be used with EXTREME caution. Lots of places are burned to the ground every year by someone using a heat gun who was surprised to learn that applied heat causes wood to burn. Have a fire extinguisher AT HAND or a hose hooked up AT HAND and try that.

Goo Gone will only work if it is in contact with the glue and if the cork is still in place, it won't help.

I do have a bottle of Goo Gone, I think I will try that first. Some of it is off, so I should be able to reach the glue with it. Good thinking.

I bet my uncle has a heat gun, thanks for the tips on safety, although I know wood burns , I probably wouldn't have been prepared with a fire ext.

If those don't work... Samantha, I think I will just duct tape over it all and forget about it, anything is better than the orange. Thanks for the laugh. Great idea!

Thanks guys.

Try some acetone to get it off.

I said the cork was glued to peg board that you don't like either. Peg board is generally mounted with pacers so hooks can be used. It may be easier to remove the peg board cork and all ifyou can find the mounting nails or screws holding it to the spacer boards. Just a thought from not seeing the situation at all.

This was a great thread - thanks mainly to Carli's great sense of humor. I once lost 100% of my humor as well as 50% of my sanity (well, perhaps those percentages should be reversed) while removing wall paper that was glued to the wall with adhesive that a black hole couldn't have budged. Then again, I didn't have legions of mc.commies to advise me. So hopefully, Carli, your task will be accomplished much more easily. Good luck!

Done and Done Thanks for your help everyone. Want to know how I did it?

I got BIGGER Hammer Seriously, that is what I did. Thanks Brian!

I thought the pegboard was glued to the actual wall, so I didn't want to hit, then when Steve A. posted that it might be attached with nails, I started investigating and BINGO! It wasn't glued to the wall and although I couldn't find the nails I got a bigger hammer and was able to take it off. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

Steve C. thanks for your nice words. I really like this forum, it makes me laugh alot, it was fun to join in.

Have a great Saturday everyone.

PS: I think we should start a support group for anyone ripping wallpaper or corkboard off their walls. I bet it would be well attended.

Great. Next thing you're going to tell us is that you created a fantastic pot rack using nothing but duct tape!

You haven't lost you sanity until you've tried to construct a swingset with a spouse who doesn't read instructions. I knew our marriage would survive anything after surviving that.

Is that any way to treat a stuffed duck?

No, just a picture that I've seen often on the web and was reminded of reading Steve's duct tape comment.

"You haven't lost you sanity until you've tried to construct a swingset with a spouse who doesn't read instructions."

Erecting a metal storage shed and tarping a haystack (until you realize at least one person needs to be on top for communication) can have a similar 'trying' effect.
