6 months ago I would have been rolling my eyes with everyone else but when we did the poem book I signed up for Facebook and I have to admit I really like it. Put me in touch with a lot of people I hadn't heard from in 10+ years and makes it real easy to stay in touch with others that I don't talk to often.

Haven't tried twitter though. From what I've heard it sounds like a trimmed down version of FB.

A message in Twitter is called a "Tweet". I think I'll pass.

The difference between Myspace/Facebook/Twitter? Well, actually a lot.

MySpace and Facebook, with their networking and profiles that can include pictures (what I believe is actually pretty much unlimited pictures, as well) and videos, are used primarily for staying in touch with people, or finding people you'd lost touch with. To be someone's "friend" and get updates on them, you must be approved by that person.

Twitter, on the other hand, is quite different. Various programs allow you to send short (140 character) messages from things like your browser, your desktop, or your phone without ever having to go to their website. You can also text in your "tweets," and turn on mobile notifications that send the messages from people you subscribe to straight to your phone. Unless a person has their information set to private, anyone that wants to can follow them.

I have myspace--only because we have family in Minnesota and Florida that we "talk" through myspace mainly with--we keep up with each other more, anyway, rather than the once a year or once every few years phone call...plus I've found a lot of my old classmates on it as well!

"I love all these new ways to communicate. You can pretend that you actually are connecting with people without really having to do it"

What makes it nice is when you have family or friends far away--like, in my case--family in MN and FL.
In another sense, if you live, oh say, just across town, then yeah, I agree with you. Texting is kind of like that in that sense as well...

He's on the short list of things I like the least.

Speaking of the list of the things I like the least, here's the List of Things I Like the Least (in no particular order after the top 3):

1.) Oompa Loompas
2.) George W. Bush
3.) John Elway
4.) Larry the Cable Guy
5.) Watermelon
6.) Ed Grimley
7.) Mama's House
8.) 911 callers who are the cause of their own problems
9.) The New York Yankees
10.) People addicted to their cell phones
11.) Slow drivers
13.) Timid people
14.) Fox News
15.) Dr. James Dobson/Rev. Fred Phelps (I believe they're the same person)
16.) The sound of vacuuming
17.) Poor spelling
18.) The sound of toe/fingernail clippers
19.) Lack of internet access
20.) Lack of Mountain Dew

Brian, I disagree with nos. 1,5,6 and 20 on your list. Oompa Loompas rock. Watermelon is yummy. Ed Grimley, well, see my prior post and Mountain Dew is the devil's brew. I just don't see how someone who usually agrees with me on almost everything can't recognize the finer points of Oompa Loompas. Sad, very, very sad.

Doesn't anyone use Skype? If you and the party that you want to talk to have cameras on your computers, you can see and talk to that person. It's a Free Service. It's pretty much like the video phones on the Jetson's.

Talbot, I use Skype and Twitter everyday - but they're not the same, if you were asking about it in regards to this thread?

Sometimes it's a blessing to have so many communications channels that fit formal, informal, quick, or otherwise. Sometimes it's a bit of a pain, though.

I use Skype frequently for dealing with clients and customers but I generally prefer it for established business relations. I don't want casual "Jetson-like" Skype calls coming to me unless they're scheduled and for a purpose. My day is busy enough as it is.

However, IM and then to Twitter are great because there are varying degrees of "obligation" to respond (or even the expectations to respond). They're both running pretty much all day for me.

For a guy working from a home or mobile office without coworkers it's nice to have this many channels open.

I've had Skype, and Twitter since their launch days (I know, i am an internet geek). I use twitter and skype daily, and have since i found them. Wonderful services that save alot of time and money in the long run. COnsidering skype's amazingly cheap land line call service, and twitters "instant update" style.

So who else is on Twitter? I've found it to be an interesting way to connect with people. And I've been using it to promote my personal blog and hope to use it to promote a sideline business. And no the business isn't MLM (Multi-Level Marketing). A friend of mine has used his Twitter account to land several new clients for his voice over business and many media and Fortune 500 companies are using it to connect with listeners, viewers, readers, customers.

There's been plenty of hype, but beyond the hype there is actually some usefulness. And you can share pictures via Twitter as well as the 140 characters of text.

My Twitter account is http://twitter.com/BigDaveBigVoice

Simply put, Oompa Loompas are evil. Not only are they evil, they are the Source of All Evil in the world today.

I am, however, a fan of Wangdoodles, Hornswogglers, Snozzwangers and "rotten" Vermicious Knids. They know the score. I support their effort to rid the world of Oompa Loompas (one mouthful at a time).

Watermelon is gritty and foul. It's an Oompa Loompa delicacy (and therefore, BAD!)

Less mince, more mincemeat
To the blender he must go
I hate Ed Grimley

Mountain Dew is not only in my blood, it IS my blood.

Thanks Josh. I'm pretty sure you're on my list of people I'm following!

One thing I've noticed on Twitter is key words are important. There are people who have software running that searches through the Twitterverse looking for words that have relevance to what they're selling or the issue they're passionate about. And there are others who just use the Twitter search box to accomplish that.

I use my Twitter account to promote the blog I post and last week I wrote an article about the police blotter feature of most small town weekly newspapers. I used an example from the Glasgow Courier that mentioned "aliens", so I tagged my Tweet with that term and got about twice the hits that my usual efforts receive. http://cli.gs/dTSAra

What IS Twitter?
Top
Posted by Josh Rath (+2330) 14 years ago
Yeah they do dave, For example. FedexAl Contacted me today on there, because I said "FEDEX" in my tweet. He offered assistance and more. It really is awesome to see companies take such pride in contacting us through new, faster ways. And, yeah. I saw you followed me one day. lol

Kyle: Twitter is a service to send "What you are doing" to your followers. Basically it is text messaging, but to all your followers at once. You update them in 140 characters or less, about completely random stuff. I myself update about anything, and just about everything. If you make an account, be sure to follow dave, emilie, and I!

This assumes you are/have:

1. followers
2. interested in being "updated"
3. that actually care

How self-adsorbed must one be to twitter, tweet, and make other obnoxious noise. If only General Custer could have had this technology.

If you twitter by using "tweets", do you signal with mirrors using "meets"?

Come on over and join us on Twitter Levi.

I'm heading back to Montana soon, so there will probably be a few more Montana centered posts there from me.

Anyone else who's thinking about joining Twitter, give it a whirl. Find some interesting folks to follow. It's not just Oprah, Ashton Kutcher and what people had for breakfast. I'm following Leo LaPorte and some other guys who watch the tech world as well as the New York Times, LA Times and other media outlets. Many of them are Tweeting links to their breaking stories.

It's a great tool if you treat it like one.

I've tried twitter, but I don't like it. Don't know why; just don't. Tried facebook, too--and also have myspace, but don't log in to myspace often anymore. Both sites allowed me to reconnect with people i haven't talked to in 10+ years, and facebook (as well as a person I reconnected with via myspace) allowed me to reconnect with my best friend from high school (we lost track of each other about 2-4 years after high school).
