Posted by kimee (+42) 14 years ago
I heard on KATL something about girls softball for ages 6-18 I think. Does anyone have information on it? This would be my daughters first year, she is 9. We moved up here from Forsyth so we would like any information on it, like how much...etc.
thanks

The summer girls' softball program is fast-pitch softball for ages 6 through 18. Sign-ups will be on March 3th and 4th at Universal Athletic from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. I am checking on the cost (I believe it was around $35 or so) and will post once I find out.

So this means they won't be competing for the North Dakota state title?

Dare I ask ... what kind of bats will they be using? (No, I am not trying to start anything ... I'm just curious.)

Yes. But only against teams like Mayville-Portland, Crosby, Watford City, and Nowhere.

Found out the cost for the summer girls' softball rec league. It will be $30 per player, however, if you have more than one child playing, it is $30 for the first child and $20 per child for additional children.

I could be wromg, but i think that up to age 7 is t-ball, and i think they can start as early as 4 yeasr old for that. Then at age 8 they play machine pitch. I'm not sure if that is an age 8-10 group, or higher.

Actually Bob, I assumed they'd be taking on the likes of Hebron, or Carson-Flasher. I hear Crosby's tough.

TL-
They have taken t-ball out this year. They will start with machine pitch, then coach/player pitch, then to the regular fast pitch for the older girls. If anyone is worried about the machine pitch, it is really not bad. I have coached this level for 2 years and you can adjust the machine to different speeds for the size of the child. One of the coaches runs the machine at all times and the ball is always going straight! The girls have had a great time playing and we have lots of fun!!

Hope to see everyone at sign-ups!!

I dunno, the Hebron Brickmakers and the Flasher Perverts could pose a threat as well...

Ages 6 to 18. I believe they are splitting them up in these groups:

Ages 6-8
Ages 8-10
Ages 10-12
Ages 13-18

I am not definite on the age splits. The individuals doing the sign-ups will have all of the info. Since softball doesn't start until this summer, I am sure they will put her in the group with 10-year-olds. I know I overlapped ages - it was just an estimate. I think I am pretty close , but not positive. Sorry I can't tell you for sure!!

do you know when practice usually starts? How are the coaches and do the girls get along for the most part? My daughter is nervous about it so I'm hoping to calm her nerves. Sorry to bother you.

I don't believe practice starts until after school is out. Coaches change each year, as it is a volunteer basis. Kids for each team are picked in a draft once the coaches are all decided and we figure out how many girls are in each age group. I am not aware of there being many problems with the younger girls. There is some drama with the older girls, of course, but most of the kinks usually get worked out. When my daughter was your daughter's age, she had girls on her team that were very good and some that weren't so good, but they all got along for the most part. That is part of the coaches job - to make sure the kids play as a "team" and encourage each other, not cause problems.
