Gas Station Question
Posted by Ben (+120) 14 years ago
I'm getting ready to restore an old gas pump for decoration on my patio. It's an old pump that was only manufactured between 1949 and 1956. Since I'm pretty sure that it's a Miles City native pump from that era, I'd like to keep it as original as I can. So...my question is...what brands of gas and and what companies had filling stations in Miles City during that time span ?? If I can get a selection of dfferent stations that were here then, I can pick which one that looks the nicest to me, and get the decals I need to make it look cool. Thanks in advance for any replies to this silly question.

I remember Carl's Conoco, Glenn's Standard, Texaco. Do you have a picture of the pump?

Mobil's red horse logo was pretty cool.

I wasn't born yet, but I'd guess Standard, Gulf, Beacon, Texaco were here around that time. If you check out old copies of the MC Star from the era there are usually ads for nearly every business at some point in time.

Pinky Pelletier had the one with the flying horse I believe. It was Custer Motors and is now the bus depot.

There was the Beacon Carter that actually had a spot light (probably a surplus Kleg light from WWII. They had to shut it down becuse the Airport complained.
Bud what'shisname owned Bud's Union 76 at 1100 main the phone number by the way was 667.
There was of course the M&H gas station where some other one is at now accross from the Libary.
Glens Standard was across from the Elks,
and accross the street from that was a Conoco station where Don Mullen the reeelteer worked.
Where Hardesty the reelteer's off is was a small Red Horse Station.
Across the street from that was where Chuck Walters had a filling station and shop. Cant remember what kind of gas he had.
Up the hill from the underpass was another Conoco station owned by Carl whatshisname.
There was a Red horse station in the forties just up from there on Hwy 10 owned by Whatshisname Jones.
Further up in the fifties was a Conoco station.
Where Sandhills now is was another station - odd, I cant remember it much.
Then down by the NP tracks, on Atlantic was a Husky station.
I'am bled out I think.

Carl Zabrocki owned Carl's Conoco by the underpass. There was a Husky gas station out in the Plaza by the Dairy Queen.

So the Standard station looks to be in the location followed by the Super America, then the Holiday....correct?

And the Conoco....is that where the M&H is now?

That's a name I haven't heard in a long time.

Gunnar, Carl's Conoco was at Main and Valley Drive by the underpass across Main St. from Coffrin's Studio. It's Miles City Real Estate today, I think.

I think the twirler at the head of the group in the BHS Parade is Mardell Milligan.

The head twirler could be Arlene Waddell. She was the one who taught the twirling group and marched with us.

And don't forget Chevron nest to the courthouse. I think Phillips 66 came in in the '60s.

M&H has been there for many years. At one time it was just a small office on the island as well as gifts you could buy with the big stamps they had. There was a garage where the M&H store is now. I believe it was run by Ted Dale. Where Midrivers is was Buds, Chevron I believe. Run by Bud Hatcher. There were 3 stations in a row where Paxons is now and across the street was the ten spot cafe and gas station.
