They are a tough team to play. You can't ever let them get ahead of you because they spend the rest of the game milking the clock.

Woo-Hoo!

A couple teams I lived near a few years ago in Wisconsin included:

and in No-Dak, I like the sound of the:

-Dickinson High School Midgets
-Minot Magicians

I could list a bunch of others, but don't have time right now.

Are you telling me that cities in each state were supposed to come up with different mascots and could not have the same? My goodness here in Texas there are certain popular mascots that appear over and over. I cannot remember the most popular, but know that these are ones in the Houston TX area...

Mustangs, Eagles, Bulldogs.

I think one of these is the most popular one in the Texas. Would have to do some research but then I might not get my doctoral work done on time to get my May 2009 degree and I think after my committee met with me today they want me to research mathematics education, not mascots.

Go Cowboys!

...We were just noting a few of the unique mascots around... Every state has their fare share of Mustangs and Bulldogs and Eagles. But, how many have a Park Ranger?
David Letterman had a top 10 list of mascots... I can't seem to find it. Chinook was #3 I believe and the Gamecocks came in at #1.

A couple of years ago Long Beach State baseball were called the Dirtbags. They went to the CWS that year with Jared Weaver. I don't know what their normal school mascot is, but I remember it was kinda cool that the baseball team changed it to Dirtbags.

Some of my favorite mascots in Montana are (some have been said, just didn't want to keep looking back)
Chinook Sugarbeeters
Whitewater Penguins
Park Rangers
Bigfork Valkyries (women's teams)
Malta M'ettes (women's teams)
Hysham Bonnies (used to be their women's teams)
Terry Terriers (kind of a homer pick, always liked it anyway)

The first time I went to Williston State I noticed they were called the Tetons. At the time I didn't realize there was a Native American tribe called the Tetons and found it odd that a junior college in Western North Dakota would be named after the mountain range in Wyoming. Yes, I felt like an idiot once I found out the truth.

There's many more good ones and I'll post them when I remember them.

I went to Prescott Middle school, Arkansas. It was always a big hoot to see the cheerleaders with their outfits with "PMS" blazed in big letters across the front.

I imagine Newell is like any other small town rural America on a saturday night. Plenty going on if you are in the right place. Growing up in Newell it seemed there was always plenty of mischief to get into.

Been awhile ago though. Vale still had a high school and they were the Vale Beet Diggers. Buffalo's mascot was the Ranchers.

Barrow "Whalers" The one and only high school football team in America that plays ball on the shores of the Arctic Ocean.

Point Hope "Harpooners" - The girls' teams are called "Harpoonerettes".

Buckland "Sissaungi" An Inupiaq word referring to beluga whales.

Kingikmiut "Killer Whales" (Wales, AK)

St. George "Seal Pups"

Saint Paul "Sea Parrots" ??? : -)

Diomede "Dateliners" Very appropriate indeed

The Aniak "Halfbreeds" Over the years the students at the school have resisted attempts to adopt a more PC symbol/mascot, but consistently stick with this. saying that it represents the mixed heritage of their community.

Mascots - Team names...

It always seemed juvenile to have the MCC women's teams called the "Lady Pioneers." Sounds like a high school name. The strongest, bravest, most courageous of the pioneers were the women.

I propose that Miles Community College change the name of their womens teams to "PIONEER WOMEN."

These are grown up people, not little girls. How about reflecting that in the team name.

I always got a huge laugh out of the "Belfry Bats" (saw that above) when I was younger. We had a friend that went to school there, and we made her tell the team's name to everyone new we met!

I used to live in San Diego, and every year they have a big "Over The Line" Tournament (a type of softball with 2 teams of 3 players). Over the years it's gotten pretty huge (50,000-70,000 attendees-they take over a large island in the middle of Mission Bay for a weekend). ESPN wanted to televise it, but they told the organizers they had to tone down the team names in order to be broadcast. The Organizers of the event said "No Way!"

So, they announce these Outrageous Team Names all day long. Loudly. I don't think any TV stations dare to air segments of the tournament for fear of getting in trouble. Here is a list of some of the "Champions" from 2003 (Beware, not all team names are very tasteful.....)

http://www.ombac.org/over...rs2003.htm

Still I think they are pretty "Original"!

Something that has always made me laugh is that Dickinson High (big school) is the Midgets, while the small parochial school Dickinson Trinity are the Titans.

I seem to remember that they initially let the students vote on a new nickname - the students came up with the Devils Lake "Blaze." This was overruled by the powers that be, ostensibly because "Blaze" could be inferred as lighting up an illicit drug. Oh well. "Firebirds" it is.

Our small city of Chanhassen is getting a high school this fall and their team will be the Chanhassen Storm. Jostens helped create the logo and there was trouble when it was found out they had basically copied a minor league baseball team's logo. Chanhassen is home to a National Weather Service station and I think that was part of the appeal of the 'Storm' moniker (plus it's generic enough as to not be be offensive to most people).

It's interesting that Chanhassen (population 21,000+ and voted Money Magazine's 2nd best small town in America this year), has just 2 elementary schools in town and this fall will have a regional high school. The majority of Chanhassen kids have to go to neighboring Chaska for much of their schooling.

On my edge of Chanhassen, the children attend school in Minnetonka (home to the popular Lake Minnetonka) and they are called the Minnetonka Skippers. I think it might be hard to feel tough in football as a 'skipper,' but they seem to do OK.

In the '80's the Glasgow Scotties made their band members (male and female) wear kilts as their formal band uniform. I think a lot of guys dropped out of band because of that. It's a little chillly when you are playing halftime at a late fall football game in your kilt! I'm guessing they wear more traditional pants now.
