Let's face it. A Rush fan is never going to convince an Al fan and vice versa so let's stop snarking at each other and chat pleasantly about other things.

Dave, how's the baby? Joe, how was the motocycle trip? Anyone want to hear about my husband coming home in BLM pants? I can tell you amusing tales about electrical problems at the Star and how cancelling an email account mistakenly cancelled the web page.

Weather's hot here but not that triple digit stuff yet. House next door is getting torn down. 100 years ago the big hoorah in the fire department was a baseball game between Hose Co. No 1 and Hose Co. No 2. 50 years ago the Elks were excited about a movie, in COLOR, with SOUND featuring Sam Snead giving golf tips. Wow. 25 years ago, Garfield School was coming down. Wonder what ever happened to that deadly but delightful pump merry go round.

So. . .what's new with you that is interesting, amusing and non-controversial?

Hey Amorette,

>>Anyone want to hear about my husband coming home in BLM pants?

BLM pants? Is that the latest fashion trend?

Jake is doing great. He turns 10 months old tomorrow and he's already into everything he's not supposed to be into. He's figured out how to open the doors on the stereo cabinet and it's only a matter of time before he's popping in his favorite Barney CD and cranking up the volume. Bonnie and I have decided that he's a very advanced child... already hitting the "terrible two's" at a mere 10 months.

So, what will become of the County Market building now that the Wal-Mart Supercenter has put County Market out of business?

Steve was on a fire taking photos. He is required to wear BLM fire resistant pants, a fire resistant shirt, boots and hard hat. The boots were his own, he put the shirt over his usual gaudy Hawaiian job and changed into the pants. The BLM guy put them in the truck. Steve had debated leaving the keys and his wallet in his pants but decided to take them with him. Good thing, since the truck was new and the BLM guy locked himself out by mistake. Steve held the pants hostage until they were able to get his out of the truck the next day.

Ah, Barney. May I recommend the Wiggles? They are Australian and weird. Give your life sort of a surreal edge when watching kiddie tv. Amazing thing about kids, one day they can't reach something and the next day. . .

Its good you explained the BLM pants thing.

Often times there is trouble in paradise when your husband comes home wearing another mans pants.

I like the gossip thing, but I would like to catch up with some of the people too. I didn't know they tore the old Garfield School down. I went to school there for the 4th.,5th.& 6th. grade. We had a very good teacher and principle named Mrs. Nichols. If any of you remember "Queen for a Day" on TV then, she was on that show. She was asking for winter coats for some of her kids. I also remember when Miles City got there first TV back in the mid 50's. What would these young kids do now if they didn't it.

I got the pleasure of going to the new Garfield. It really was a great place to go to school. I barely remember seeing the old Garfield when I was very young (pre-school aged) Why did they tear it down, was it much different. or in worse condition than Lincoln, Washington, or the High School?

I'm curious about what the final fate of the Ft Keogh Officers Quarters buildings was, or is to be. How'd that finally end up?

Posted by Darryl Condit (+48) 19 years ago
An accountant bought them and is going to take them to his property by Kinsey and restore them. I believe he paid a dollar for the buildings.

The Garfied School was a plain boxed style building, with several stories high. Nothing fancy like you have today. I also went to CCHS in the mid "50 we had of course "freshman initiation". Is that still being done today?

As far as the County Market building, one rumor i heard was that Ace was going to turn it into a lumber yard? Any one else hear anything about it??

Well, I was a freshmen at CCDHS in 1999. There definately was no freshmen initiation then. I don't think any of my other siblings ever had any sort of initiation either. Do highschools anywhere really do initiations anymore? They've become so controversial and some have gotten waaaay too ugly. We did have one at college though! It was sorta fun. We got these cool beanie hats that we could wear around. (it wasn't required, completely up to you if you wanted to participate in any festivities) Seniors could stop freshmen and make them sing the school song or the "BH" song. I never really wore the hat too often, so I never had to sing solo, but at the football games we all sang. Fun times, fun times...

Duncan Wohlgenant, who is a chemical engineer, bought the Officers Quarters and will be moving them OVER the Yellowstone bridge later this summer to his family's ranch on Sunday creek and restore them, one into a very large single family home, one into an apartment and a garage. Should be fun watching them move. . .When done, they will be visible from the road and will look pretty much the same outside. We're pleased.

Heard the Ace rumor, too. The buildings are actually two separate structures, built a few months apart, with about three inches between. The old landlord wouldn't let Kmart expand into the Safeway building, which is part of the reason why Kmart left Miles City. The store was too small and not expandable. Don't know if Steadman's bought the building they are in and who owns the County Market building.

Greyhound won't make the long trip between Billings to Fargo without stopping. They won't GO between Billings and Fargo but will dead end. The route is profitable but not profitable enough. Geez, I miss Amtrak! Cheaper and more efficient than flying, less stinky than the bus.

We have been hitting the triple digits.

Um, Garfield came down chiefly because it was the era of tearing down rather than restoring and adapting. With construction costs what they are now, and the realization that old buildings were often much better built than modern ones, that trend has slowly been changing.

In 1954, there were three tvs in Miles City. David Rivenes got the best reception because he stuck his antennae up a telephone poll in the alley. Only got tv occasionally, since the Butte station was open but Billings was still in the process of construction. Mostly he got skip from weird places like horse races in Texas. When he got a picture, he'd head out the back door yelling "television" and all the neighbors would come over for a look.

Sigrid still lives in that house. Oh, and Ella was selected by the Garden Club for their "curb appeal" sunflower contest. They fixed up her front yard, in the carriage house out back. Very nice.

PS. My husband just said "Was there some discussion about my pants on MilesCity.Com?'" Heheheheheh.

Angela:

Concordia College?

We used to steal beanies from the freshmen, back in the day. (I didn't attend Concordia)

It's good to hear that it's now voluntary to wear the beanies. Way back when I was a kid, freshmen had to wear the lids until CC won a football game. Ugh.

Do they still have a corn cob as a mascot? That was classic.

I heard a rumor from a realiable source that Mac's was looking into the County Market Building to compete better with other car dealerships. I do not know if it is true but thought it was interesting when I heard that.

Moving the "Mac's Frontierland" Ford dealership to Haynes Ave. does sound like a good move for them. And speaking of "Mac's" does anyone remember when the grocery store in that location was called "Mac's IGA"?

Nope, I go to school at "SDSM&T" (I know, I know....loooong name. But try saying it fast, its fun!) SDSM&T is South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City. (Is that too much information to give out online? Oh well, I guess I'll risk it.) We're one of the only schools I know of that still does the beanies. I'm pretty sure none of the colleges any of my friends went to do anything like that with their new freshmen. Oh, and our mascot is "Grubby." He's a little miner with a pic axe, t-square, pistil, and lots of facial hair.

I'm young but I DO remember Mac's IGA. I remember trick-or-treating there and getting an apple! I think I also got a BabyRuth candy bar, but I hated (and still dislike) BabyRuths so I wasn't very impressed with the store. I mean, what kid in the right mind wants fruit and gross candy for Halloween?1?!? But the tiger was cool.

Of course I'm going into engineering!!! What other kind of degree is there??

Actually, when I first went to Tech, I was planning on studying atmospheric sciences. I LOVE weather, love watching it, trying to predict it, taking pictures of it. But then I changed majors. I think I decided I'd rather have weather be more of a pastime or hobby with me. Keep it fun, ya know? Well, I switched to Geological Engineering actually. I took one geology class this last year and I really enjoyed it. I learned a ton of interesting information. But then, I switched my major again. Now I'm Industrial Engineering. (I know, I know..."imaginary engineer" as so many others like to call us) I haven't taken any classes in this major yet, so we'll see if I stick. Switching back to Geological or Atmospheric Sciences are also still possible choices at this point. What can I say, I read somewhere that college students change their major on average about 7 times (seems kinda high, but I read it somewhere). I'm just trying to be a normal college kid!!! Just kidding...Maybe I'll just be a full-time college student. After all, I do love learning!!! Scary huh?

I'm going to have to procure a sweatshirt with a "Grubby" logo next time I venture to the Rapid City metro area. I'm sure it beats a corn cob mascot any day!

Grubby is a pretty cool guy/mascot. I have a pretty good friend who entered the Grubby look-a-like contest last year. He didn't win, but he should have. Anyway, here's the address of the page where you can find our Grubby mascot. Now you can decide whether it really is better than a corn cob.
http://www.hpcnet.org/cgi...eID=192036

AnnaRose~ I agree! I remember the good old days when I could walk a short distance from my home to Osco Drug and Buttreys over in the Plaza. And there used to be that Cenex gas station where a kid could buy candy. I wish that side of town didn't look so trashy. But maybe since there's that new bar and as I understand it, a sort of reception hall in the works, people will start looking at that side of town again. We can only expand so far out on Haynes right? Maybe we'll get to a point where people get tired of looking at trash and will start considering that side of town again. I think it'd be awesome if somebody opened a nice restaurant (maybe one mentioned in the Dream Restaurant forum? *wink wink*nudge nudge*) Perhaps a miniature golf course/paint ball type thing would go well over there too. Aww, but who knows. Maybe people would be unwilling to communte the extra 5 minutes or so to get across town from their ritzy houses. It does seem odd to me that that side of town died so much. It's not that far from the interstate, but I guess it must be just far enough to make the difference. I can't say I blame the businesses moving to a location where they can get more traffic by and through their stores. It's not their fault so much of Miles City avoids making a trip down Valley Drive East just because it's too far.

Thanks, Dave. As per Joe's suggestion to try to put a human face to forum participants, this will help out those who have never met me to visualize what I look like. One suggestion, though - replace Grubby's pickaxe with a pint of IPA.

I don't really think MC can support a Costco. Though I suppose a lot of people that come into town from the surrounding area would like to buy in bulk. Let's be honest, I like Costco for the free samples.

i have heard both rumors, macs car dealership and ace hardware. I haven't heard the one about costco. The costco rumor has been circulating since i moved here in 89. i sense though that if they ever did come in, they would decide like every other chain store that mc cannot contribute financially, like compared to what...Denver, duh...I am sad that Holiday is going. Hope someone buys it soon. I like their coffee and the friendly folks. I like the restaurant idea on valley drive. it is looking pretty sad out here. I would be happy for a little eatery across the street again like it was with dairy queen. i quite enjoyed the mr. mistys on a hot day during work break that were so easily obtainable. It was so convenient. I guess i will just have to actually take a lunch break once in a while. I miss the penneys store, i would like to have more of a choice of clothing than walmart. wishlists.....

As for Costco coming into town. I really don't see that happening. WalMart would probably freak out and demand that we let them put a Sams Club in or something. I don't think Miles City would be able to support a store like Costco/SamsClub AND a Super WalMart.

Nothing ever changes Kyle, back in the 60's we shopped Reynolds in Glendive. Hey! Does anyone remember when you orderded your DQ Dilly Bars from the sidewalk outside the building, they made them while you waited, and there was that round neon light with the fan and a sack that kept the mosketers from the swamp from eating you alive?

I enjoyed the pump merry-go-round, Mrs. Nickols...not so much.
They tore down Garfield cause it would be too costly to put in a new heating and cooling system. Cutting holes 4 foot thick brick walls is not an easy thing to do. Garfield's orginal building had 8 classrooms, 4 on each floor. Two classroms were in the addition that was built around 1960. A temporary classroom was placed on the east entrance of the original building in '65 or '66. The basement included a gym (playing basketball, if you hit the wall you were out-of-bounds) two lockerrooms. a lunch room and the boiler room. The basement celings were so low a 6th grader(me)had to duck for them. The building had been closed for a few years before it was torn down. I would have liked to have seen it left standing and used, but I don't see how it could have survived the codes required for schoolbuildings, there was a fire escape on the outside of the building for the upper floors, and ladders in the gym to get out of the basement.
