I stopped there twice. The first time it was raining and the trail was muddy so I decided to come another day.

Such a tranquil experience. The location is just off an exit from Interstate 35 in northern Iowa. Follow googled directions to a dirt road close to Mason City and Clear Lake. It's so clearly marked by a huge wooden replica of Buddy Holly's glasses. Then you follow a trail into the field where many symbols and memorabilia adorn the location. It's likely you'll be alone. It's off the beaten path and with every passing year the memory of these huge talents fades some more.

I loved my time there. The soft feel of the wind through the fields sounds like whispers from the era long ago.

I also sighted the airport where the flight took off from and, of course, the Surf Ballroom which STILL STANDS!

If you can, go.
