I noticed this Wikipedia listing:

Wikipedia: Tallest Structures in the United States

That says the KTGF television "tower" is the tallest structure in Montana:

KTGF Television Tower (Great Falls NBC 16)
- Height: 801 ft (244 m)
- Great Falls (47°36′26″N 111°21′30″W)
- Year built: 1986
- Owner: Max Media of Montana

But this Wikipedia listing:

Wikipedia: KIKC-FM

Says KIKC's antenna in the Rosebud Buttes is 1010 ft.

When I went to school 1010 was greater than 801.

What gives? Are they making some distinction between an antenna and a "tower"? An antenna is a man-made structure in my book.

You can edit the page to correct it, or add the KIKC tower.

That KIKC-FM listing says their antenna is 1010 ft "HAAT" (height above average terrain). The actual height is 656 ft above ground. So, that is the story behind that.

Oh, and make no mistake, 656 feet is still a pretty dang tall antenna. I'm pretty sure that when it was built in ~1980 it was the tallest man-made structure in Montana. The KTGF tower didn't come along until 1986.

When I think of the tallest structure in Montana, some antenna doesn't come to mind. I think of the largest standing masonry structure in the world, the 585 foot Anaconda smelter stack. It is so big you can fit the Washington monument inside of it.

I heard a fairly hair-curling story from a guy that has climbed the KIKC tower to change a fuse on the light at the top. The last 20 ft. or so at the top require you climb on the outside. I get nauseated just think about it.
