What happened to the Republican party? I remember their harping on the necessity of being responsible for one’s actions. We now know that this touting the virtue of responsibility was nothing more than a slogan. The purpose of the participants in the January 6 riot and insurrection in our Capitol was to stop the certification of presidential election results. What possible reason do the Republicans have in resisting a commission to investigate this murderous attempt to destroy our democracy, other than self-interest?
It is impossible to overstate both the speed and the extent to which the United States, as the home of democracy, has deteriorated into a true have-not country in which the spoils go only to a small percentage of the population and in which fairness in any context has become an alien concept. While Donald Trump is the emblem of this collapse, he is not its only architect. For that we have the Republican Party.
A campaign of misinformation has been conducted by the Republicans resulting in poorly educated people enveloped in a life of lies and fabrications. Brainwashed as they are, these people - who firmly believe the outside world is against them - are used to the verbal and physical stifling of the opposition, as was the attempted insurrection on January 6. It is no mystery why the Republicans are resisting a commission to investigate the attempted insurrection. The result of the investigation will point directly to the cause, the Republicans.
