The latest mystery from the archaeological digs: Does anyone remember Mary Blaine Time (brought to you by Jack's Foodtown) on KATL (still at 1340 at that time)?

I confess I can't really remember Jack's Foodtown although I did find a reference (in an obituary) to it existing in 1962. Reality is that I find it more fun to see if anyone out there remembers these "treasures".

Jack's sounds like an IGA or Safeway. There was an old arched building on the north side of Main Street before the Pine Hills corner that was an IGA or Safeway.

That would make sense. I'm guessing this was a handout from the store. Mom didn't learn to drive until 1967 and that would have been within walking distance (she used to pull us in the wagon--which I still have and use). I'm not certain if you can even buy lard any more.

We listened to the radio far more than watching TV. I do remember the BINGO games and playing several cards. I suspect it was Mom's way of keeping us occupied.

My favorite grocery shopping memories will probably always be Reynolds during the warehouse grocery days of the flat carts and grease pen markers (not only wonderful for putting the prices on, but also handy for marking up your sibling--not that I ever did that, of course).

Safeway was on North 7th Street and became a beer distributor later on. I believe Jacks Food Town was on Leighton Boulevard just before crossing the tracks

Jack's Foodtown was owned by Jack Clifford. I think we previously decided it was located on East Main in what is today the Carquest Auto Parts store.

Jack's son, also named Jack, went on to own and operate Jack's IGA in Forsyth. That Jack Clifford passed away in March of 2017.

I remember a grocery store on 7th when I was a youngster.I think it was called Sawyers.Pretty sure Beacon Carter Tire Store was there after it closed.[Just south of the tracks on the west side] I also remember a grocery store by the RR crossing on Leighton[SW side]that burned down in the 60s I think.Don't remeber the name though.

I recollect what Tom Masa said about Jack's starting out in the old Haley's Grocery on Leighton Boulevard. But it was Jack O'Riley who bought out the business and ran it. Jack worked at Haley's for many years and my folks always did their shopping there. I remember the market being "Jack's" until it burned down in the '60's(?). So that begs to question, did Jack O'Riley ever have anything to do with "Jack's Foodtown". I vaguely remember the store on East Main but I never knew Jack Clifford. I guess I always assumed that Jack O'Riley had just relocated after the fire.
