This breaks my heart. How could a minority of people allow this to happen? How could that minority rejoice in the destruction of what made this country worthwhile?

The electorate could see what kind of person Trump was before the election in 2016 and many still voted for him. The concern I have is not so much the president as the electorate which found him adequate or perhaps reflective of their beliefs. My hope is that reasonable, thoughtful people who once thought MAGA good, now see that former greatness has been lost through poor leadership.
And our constitution has been distorted beyond belief--the first amendment which guarantees states rights taken over by the NRA and federal government for example, the idea of religious freedom meaning that the government tells individuals what they should believe and that Christian schools should get special support rather than the freedom of all to choose their religion for another example.
Even though an Australian nonagenerian (I'm guessing) can distort the views of our nation to our detriment is incredible. That people really think we who demonstrate against guns and police brutality are the ones who would send busloads of rioters to innocent cities because someone on facebook starts a rumor--come on folks! Where is your skepticism. Think!

No country was disrespecting the US until the last 3 years. Somehow Trump managed to convince people who had little experience in places other than the US and particularly middle America, that the insecurity and the contempt he rightfully felt as an immature male reflected how other countries and their leaders felt about the US. That was never true, though many did not like us. Now our friends are feeling pity for us and those who do not have generous feelings for Americans as people, are just plain contemptuous for having elected a man who does not understand the constitution of the US and violates it's principles at every turn.
In my last post I pointed out two of the first amendment states' rights which the electorate has misunderstood with Trump's twisting of the meaning of the Bill of Rights. Another which the states were afraid of was that a strong central government would turn whatever power was given to them against the citizens of the states as had happened so often in Europe from which most of the immigrants had escaped. Now we see that very threat made against people exercising their right to peaceably assemble and I hear many trying to suggest that peacefully demonstrating Americans are a violent mob seeking to damage the US. Wrong. The protesters are building democracy and you seem to think living out the rights guaranteed by the constitution is antiamerican. It's you have are confused more than the protesters. Please try to understand.
A great deal of the problem comes from deliberate attempts to undermine social order on anonymous posting sites and are passed on by people (as you seem willing to do) who are more interested in feeling powerful (like driving powerful pickups) than in protecting the very special rights adopted by our founding fathers. Again, I see you as tearing down the institutions which make the US so vibrant and respected while insisting you are a patriot. That indicates that you apparently don't understand the world dynamic very well and are part of less than optimally educated electorate which made a huge mistake in the 2016 elections while probably being well intentioned.
I don't suppose I can change your vote, but I do hope that the voice of reason will reach enough of the electorate that at least the same mistake of 2016 won't be made again in 2020.

I heard a great line on NPR yesterday morning:
"Is Trump really a dictator, or does he just play one on TV?"

Thank you for your comment. I do find some agreement with your contention that we need to protect intellectual property which is probably being stolen from within China. I am a capitalist and, to the extent China, which I feel comfortable in speaking of monolithically since they are so dominated by central control, is stealing intellectual property rather than paying for it, we need to take a stand.
As far as other nations wanting our money--well, of course they do. Just like we want theirs--or really I'm speaking of assets. Everyone would like to gain wealth and, through cooperation, the rising waters have raised all boats. Our western competitors work to gain economically, but China has utilized central control unfairly to take some things.
But one must also realize that they have provided us with excellent products and technology at a good price. We need to utilize our competitive system to effectively deal with those Chinese companies which are following international rules of trade. I believe the central government of China has failed to follow generally agreed upon standards and patent protection, we have to protect ourselves and our companies while not damaging many other companies across the world which do follow world trade conventions.
We cannot force China to believe in capitalism as I (and much of the US) do, so we must protect ourselves from unfair competition.
Has Trump done that effectively? The inconsistency he displays plays into China's hand as far as I can see. They see us a weak also when professionals who have devoted their lives to diplomacy are fired whimsically by our president in order to install cronies who have few qualifications beyond genuflecting to our president.
It is a difficult problem, I agree. And one which requires the best minds available to us.
Best, L.
