Kinsey sits where the pavement stops and where the New Deal gave farmers a fresh start.
A farming community of about 100 families, it fills the bottomland north of the Yellowstone River, the only dot on the highway map between Miles City and Terry.
Irrigation ditches cut through green beet fields. Small dairy barns, peppered through the farm sites, form a recurring pattern - differing in color, repeating in size and shape. To the south, bone-dry hills rise beyond the Yellowstone. Interstate-94 spills though a dip in the hills, the distant vehicles looking as tiny as Matchbox cars.

Thanks for the link, Hal. Great article.

I had no idea that Kinsey was born as a Socialist Utopia.

Socialist Utopia

They were lumpenproletariat compared to those Bolshies in the Matanuska Valley Colony up north.

This thread reminded me of a Miles City career plan story.

In the way back time, I had an acquaintance who had just started to date a young lady from Kinsey. We were in the 600 Lounge one night having a beer, when one of the local goofs (perhaps an ex-suitor?) comes up to him and says "Hey, you're dating (so and so) now, aren't you?" He says, Yeah, what's it to you?" The overly curious dude (and rude mofo) then blerts out "Well, she's got an older brother who just got out of 'Nam, so if you're thinking about getting the farm, forget about that!"

My friend just chuckled and told the guy "Thanks, pal, but farming is not the game plan...."

I wonder who had the fastest car on the quarter mile track on the Kinsey highway?

Well, she's got an older brother who just got out of 'Nam....

That certainly qualifies as way back time. Cue in Peabody and Sherman.
