XL Keystone Pipeline, Presidential Permit Issued?

Trump’s ego and self-importance know no bounds. Now he’s issued his illegal presidential permit for the construction of the XL Keystone pipeline across the United States. If constructed it would cross many rivers and water sources that are basic to our very being. It would extend to Houston, Texas, a port where petroleum products are exported to China.

The company producing most of the oil that would fill the ill-advised pipe line is Sunshine Oilsands Ltd., of Calgary, Alberta. This company’s application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange announced that it raised more than Can$ 230 million dollars, while allying with China Life Overseas and The Bank of China Investment Group. It also named members of its Board of Directors, Mr. Haotian Li, Mr. Tingan Liu, Songning Shen and Raymond Fong.

Are we ready to give foreigners eminent domain powers and trust the Chinese, who have no record of any kind of quality control in anything they do, to place pipelines across our water ways? What is Trump’s financial interest in this project and what is wrong with the Republicans who worship at his feet?

One of the many obstacles to building this pipeline is the Clean Water Act and how Waters of the United States are defined. The Trump EPA is proposing to rescind the protections to our water that happened under the 2015 act. What the Trump EPA is proposing is analogous to deciding to remove the requirement for seatbelts in cars because we have saved enough lives and continued protection is unnecessary.

While I recognize the treatment of some ephemeral streams in the current rule are perhaps overkill, we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I'd encourage you to read the proposed rule and comment. Understand that if your comments are not in favor of the proposed repeal, they will likely be duly noted and ignored. Commenting with this administration is about protecting your right to sue at a later date.
