MASTERSON FRANCIS W. MASTERSON Francis W. Masterson died on November 16, 2018 in New York City after a brief illness. He was 93 years old. Frank was born on April 1 1925 in Miles City, Montana to Edward J. and Minnie M. Masterson. He was the second of three sons. His brothers preceded him in death; Edward in 2002 and James in 2012. Frank served in the US Army during World War II. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946 from the 334th Infantry having achieved the rank of Technician Fifth Grade and Clerk with honors as a combat infantryman carbine rifle marksman. He saw active duty in France and Holland, was invalided to England, and returned to duty in Paris after the Liberation and in Berlin. His time in the service opened his eyes to the French way of life. Sailing on the SS Liberte' he returned to France in 1958 studying Political Government with a Fulbright Scholarship at the Ecole National d'Administration in Paris and in Marseille. In Provence he met his future wife Margaret Hargrave Pauling. She joined him in Washington D.C. where they married in 1961. Thwarted in his chosen career in the Foreign Service by an FBI investigation during the McCarthy period, Frank spent 40 years working for the Civil Service Commission, which became the Office of Personnel Management. Frank is survived by his only child Jane M H Masterson of New York City. Frank shared his love of travel and art with his daughter. Together in June they sailed on the Queen Mary II to England and on to Italy to stay at the restored deconsecrated church in Umbria where she plans to live. Frank was a sculptor working in clay as well as wood and marble. He was taught by the Maestro Juan Jose Sicre whom he met at the Corcoran School of Art in the early 60's. Instead of a memorial service, Frank was celebrated with an art show spanning his many years of creativity. His final accomplishment; he taught his daughter to play Bridge. Thank you. And you, sir, are you the keeper of the web site or perhaps you knew of my father?

My deepest sympathy for your loss. From the obituary, it seems your Father lived a creative, adventurous life of depth, purpose and honor. I wish I would have known him and seen his sculptures. I know you are so proud to be his daughter.

Thank you for all the replies.
So many Irish families names are repeated.

Yes,James Masterson was his Uncle. He was a rancher, politician and artist. He died in 1970 in Miles city.
His son John Edward married Barbara (Red) and had 3 redheaded daughters. They settled in Colorado.

My Uncle Jim, my dad's brother lived in London, UK.

The elder James Masterson was a close friend of my grandparents and parents and I remember him from my childhood. We have a number of his paintings in my family, including one he painted specifically for my mother.

Now I realize you were referring to my dad's younger brother Edward. He was often called Red. A longtime resident of Seattle, WA, he died in 2002.
