Forum Flooding

The primary purpose of the discussion forums is for public discussion. They were not intended to be a dumping ground of links to every single external news article or video on the Internet.

Repetitively posting news links that receive no user engagement or discussion or debate defeats the purpose of the forums.

Mary Catherine, this is directed to you. I'm requesting, for the second time now, that you stop carpet bombing the site with external news links - especially, when (as mentioned above) it becomes apparent there is little or no user engagement or discussion or debate on what you are posting.

It is OK to post links to news stories and such, but when you keep doing it over and over and no one is responding - then there has to be a line. At some point it just becomes pollution.

I myself am tired of looking at the wasteland you've laid to some of the forums. And I'm sorry if that seems harsh, but that's the reality. For God's sake, one of the latest topics has 13 replies in a row from you - which are not replies to *anyone* - with no one else engaging or commenting in return.

So I need to ask you to stop. I'm asking you now.

Thanks, Larry

Larry:

I did not realize that this web site was for discussion purposes only.

Admittedly, I have posted many breaking news stories as events have unfolded on this website from newspapers of record -- because the news I post is frequently not in the local papers.

Since you are apparently not interested in the news. I will stop posting.

Thank you for clarifying things.

To Mary Catherine
I don't know you, but I expect, from the Webmaster's letter to you, that your feelings are hurt. I don't often bring up Milescity.com, but when I do, I like reading your posts. They add a little zip, kick and controversy to the website.
I must tell you, I disagree with almost everything you write but the diversity of opinions expressed here can open up understanding and even change one's preconcieved opinions.
I don't like clicking on the "external news links" which you want us to read. I like to read YOUR opinions! You don't need another news clip to reinforce your opinion. You seem to be a strong, independent lady! You have a fire in you which others may call fanatic, but what ever it is, it must be expressed! Perhaps you should write books, magazine articles or go into politics!
It's my hope you don't stop contributing to this website. You appear to be an intelligent, young lady with a lot to say!
Because I don't agree with what you say doesn't diminish the fact that you bring up interesting feelings and opinions about things happening in the world. I like that you don't criticize others who post their thoughts. Maybe your kindness comes through your writings, which is why it's so interesting.
I sincerely hope you reconsider your decision to stop all postings. Whatever you decide, I wish you well and hope you don't lose your fire!

Webmaster:

I wholeheartedly agree with your message to MCDunphy. What was formerly an interesting and lively exchange of ideas became endless tiresome repetition by the "troll". I lost any interest in posts that opened with her name and perceive that many others also no longer participate when they see her name.
Original thinking and creative posts are OK - regardless of viewpoint. Endless posting of headlines and articles from other sources is inexcusable. I do not care to be flooded with such drivel.

Dear Webmaster:

It recently occurred to me that your request (see above) for me to stop posting content on milescity.com violated my constitutional right to free speech. I consulted with an attorney to verify if my analysis was correct. I was informed that as long as milescity.com is a public website, it is within my constitutional First Amendment right to freely post as many articles as I want –- just as it is the constitutional right of any user to post content freely on milescity.com. As a 67 year old woman, I find it ironic (and sexist) that you chose to scold me, rather than some of the men who post their vile and derisive comments on this website.

Your term “forum flood” is not a legally viable term. You may not like what I post or how much post, just as many users on milescity.com may not, but within the Constitutional framework of my civil rights, that is too bad. The U.S. Constitution gives me the right to decide what content or articles I want to post –- not you.

So, please be informed that effective today I will resume posting articles and other content on milescity.com. If you have a different opinion on this matter and ban me from posting on milescity.com, please be informed that there is a civil rights attorney who will be happy to continue the conversation with you in a more formal manner and setting.

Nobody is required, or forced, to click any link where I post content on this website. It is up to them to decide if they want to read what I post or not. If you don’t like what I post, simply do not click on the link. I do not understand why others do not post more articles -– particularly on the national news forum -- but it is their right to either post or not post.

Thank you. Oh, and have a nice day! And, may God bless America!

And the attorney you consulted was.... (dramatic pause)

Bobby Boatly?

This is a privately-owned website and the webmaster has the absolute right to determine who and what is allowed to be posted. Deal with it!

The first mistake in your analysis, and the opinion you received, was:

> I was informed that as long as milescity.com is a public website

MilesCity.com is not a "public" website, in that is not endorsed or funded by any public or government resource. It is a privately owned property - made available as a courtesy to members of the public who wish to utilize it, under specific terms of use.

For that reason, I have the right to define those terms, as well as the right to moderate content and control access.

For more information, I would direct you to:

Any attorney worth his salt would know right away about the rights of a website's ownership on a website such as this.

Don't confuse public with... public.

This is a private website that is freely accessed by the public. Like the webmaster said above.... no one but him has ownership and COMPLETE control of the who, what, how, and all the rest of the H words... on this site.

Just because my house has windows and technically a member of the "public" can peek into the house, that does not give the member of the public the right to claim that he or she can go ahead and enter my house without my permission.

If your "civil rights attorney who will be happy to continue the conversation with you in a more formal manner and setting." actually told you this... then maybe try again?

I'm thinking the above mentioned attorney is thinking along the lines of getting together with the webmaster... having a beer and sharing a ...few laughs about this whole thing.

So, Mr. Webmaster with regard to the rules of this website:

How about those other users on milescity.com whose numerous, and various posted comments in the past, have been "obscene, abusive, harassing, threatening, off-topic, unintelligible or inappropriate, as determined by our moderators."

It appears you are selectively enforcing your rules.

I will continue to confer with legal counsel.

Best regards!

Just for the curious, if you try to increase your donation to MC.com (Larry's milescity.com) to over $99 it adds a 0 to the end of it and freaks you right the heck out, so Imm'a go $80 at a time until I remember to buy an ad and be obnoxious with it again.

And now I have ad space. What do I do with it? Be an a$$hole, (I have that capability and I know it (I wonder if Larry's filter catches that-)) or let things play out?

Sorry, the input field width was too small. I increased it to resolve the issue. Thanks for pointing that out! And thanks for your donation!

As for MCD's postings, I don't get a lot of time to peruse the national news after 8-10 hours at work and 3-5 at the evening commitments, so it is nice to get some condensed version of national event.
And, I don't post much since I am not so well read on historical and political nuance, I lurk and learn.

if no one but the trolls respond to any of MCD's news threads, it isn't her fault, so much as folks not deeming them worthy of comment, in my opinion.
For whatever reason.

have fun.

MCD to help you understand the difference, please look at all the posts in the National/World forum..... the forum domination that you’ve done there with garbage news stories is forum flooding. If you can’t see the different between that and heated discussion or trolling then you have the problem not Larry. If Larry had a zero tolerance policy for trolling (again, different from what you’re doing) he’d have to kick all the Democrats off of his website.

And me. Had to see just how long I've been a pest and I still can't quite believe it's really been that long.

Props to Larry for putting up with some of us for so long.

And to Richard- There's a joke in there about 51 cards, but I can't work it out. I'm better with haikus than jokes anyhow

I asked you to not flood the forums. Yet you come back, lecture me, and continue to not follow the rules I laid out.

Let me repeat, this is my website, not yours. I'm the one who made it. I'm the one who pays the bills. I'm the one who keeps it operating.

The original site did not even have any posting feature or discussion forums. After the forums were created and added, basic rules were established. The foremost being that if I request you to stop doing something to my site, then you should kindly quit doing it.

The ability to post here is not a right. It is a privilege granted to those who agree to the terms & conditions and rules of the site - and is kept by following the rules.

I am revoking your posting privileges because you seem unable to do that. And because you are intentionally engaging in behavior I specifically asked you to stop. And because you are harassing me. And because I don't need a reason.

If you don't like that, then I suggest you go create your own website or blog. And post there.

Good day.

I too, found the posting of links to stories that I'd already heard on the news, read in the paper, or read on the net irritating and a waste of space. I also believe in the Webmaster's right to establish rules for posting and conduct on this site.

BUT...what I find more disgusting are the personal attacks on people who post (including the person whose privileges were just revoked) by individuals hiding behind pseudonyms. Are these non-persons afraid of losing friends or social standing if their true identities are known? They probably have neither of those anyway. So, if you don't agree with someone and must say something mean, insulting, or derogatory, at least have the guts to put your name on your comment.
