Posted by Mary Catherine Dunphy (+2902) 5 years ago
Today (03-24-2018) at noon in Miles City, we will be marching in support of the students around the world who are participating in the "March for Our Lives." We will meet in front of the Trails Inn Restaurant. Bring a sign if you want to! My sign will say, Books Not Bullets!

In the meantime, here is a live stream from the March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C.

45 minutes to get to the Trail's Inn. I bunged up my knee and will only be there in spirit but my heart will be marching in the sunshine.

This was hard to listen to yesterday.

The Daily Show sent a correspondent to cover the "pro gun" rally in Helena. You have to watch the clip embedded in the article. It is pretty funny listening to him interview these gun nut rubes.

The gun rally in Helena was an embarrassment to our state. What a bunch of stupid assholes. I really appreciated their position that everyone is safer when people are armed. Meanwhile the dip poops in Helena were at their demonstration under an understanding that no guns were allowed.

Know I'm going to get bashed for this. Why not march for tolerance, acceptance, understanding, anti-bullying...? Guess to me, its like getting clap after you hooked up with to many barflys. Then preaching that the barflys are at fault, instead of trying to prevent yourself from getting the clap in the first place.

Would being kinder help prevent these shootings? I don't know, but it wouldn't hurt either.

IMHO, I'm thinking that the Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development will not be using this video in its promotions about the various wonders of Montana.

I guess I will explain this simply. The March for Our Lives was to draw attention to the fact that kids are tired of being killed in school. Your analogy would only work if you knew for a fact that there would never again be another school shooting death. Since neither your nor I nor anyone else can say unequivocally that shootings are now history the march is to say they are tired of waiting to be shot.

As for being kinder, that isn't enough to stop school shootings. Now think of it this way. If your child went to school with a child who was very anti-social, who didn't make friends, who was angry, who seemed distant, would you send your child in and say "Go and be friends. Make that kid into a normal kid so we don't have to worry about him killing everyone."

It is not our children's job to provide mental health care for students. It is the responsibility of adults who have had the proper professional training.

It is victim blaming and should not be tolerated. Not one person should be looked at as a failure because they didn't stop a psychotic from killing them!

#walkupnotout asks students to take responsibility for the mental health of their classmates, suggesting that school shootings are *their fault* for not being “nicer.” It’s victim-blaming. Stop it.

It’s baffling to me that people think that instead of making it harder for a troubled teenager with a history of violence to get his hands on an AR-15, we should just tell students to “be nice” and hope he doesn’t shoot them. Good grief.

So I hope you don't take this as bashing and more as simple explanation. These kids, teachers, parents and grandparents are tired of wondering if they will make it through their next day of school. I am a mom of two teachers. I have two grandchildren in school and another will be next year. I fear for their lives every day. As a step-parent whose last memory of her stepson was him laying in a casket with a wig on to cover the hole on top of his head and the hole in his temple, along with sunglasses to cover where his eye was gone...from his own mother's gun I should add, I will say burying a child due to gun violence isn't something I would wish on anyone. Anything we can do to prevent more needs to be done. I hope you agree.

What annoys me to no end, is that the same gun nuts who say that it's not guns that are killing people, it's the mentally ill, are the same pro-Trump crowd who vote against health care, which of course includes mental health treatment. They would rather gun down the mentally ill then try to help them get treatment. Sad.
