Honeymoon
Posted by Slosh (+701) 16 years ago
Hey, I'm getting married (way out of my league by the way) and we're going over different ideas for our honeymoon. We're looking for a fairly inexpensive, yet adventerous, time. So we're looking for ideas of where people have gone, and how they liked it.

Thanks,

Slosh & Sarah

Well, we went to Victoria Island, BC and stayed at a bed & breakfast, but that is a little far from Miles City and I believe a passport is needed for Canada now.....how about Vegas???? Would be fun and entertaining, warm and there is alot to do than just gamble. Or if you want something closer, what about renting a cabin in the mountains?? Anywhere from Rapid City to Bozeman. We did that in S.D. for our babymoon. We stayed just outside of Deadwood for a night then went to Rapid and onto MT. Rushmore. Whatever you decide it should and will be the best time of your life. Just going anywhere will be fun and you will make your own memories. Congratulations

Slosh:

Congrats! Glad to hear you outkicked your coverage.

Hmmmm. Limited budget.

Drive to Rapid/Black Hills area?

They still have cheap flights to Las Vegas on Allegiant airlines (Billings/LV). Fly down for a few days, stay at a bad motel on Fremont Street, see the sights. Take the Mrs. to the top of the Eifell Tower at the Paris casino. Very romantic, no?

Congrats, Slosh!
I ditto the Black Hills idea. Deadwood is fun, and there are lots of little places to stay tucked into the hills anywhere between Spearfish and Rapid.
We went to NYC for our honeymoon (Giants game). Not exactly inexpensive, but the empire state buidling with a full moon hanging overhead was pretty darn neat.
Or how about waiting until next summer, and heading to Denver to catch the Rockies - Marlins? Would Sarah go for that?? Or is that too much like regular life to be considered a honeymoon?

Other ideas...Yellowstone, Jackson Hole, Cody (the Inn in Cody has ridiculously inexpensive off-season rates and it's an awesome historical place).

Thanks for the ideas. I was up till about 2 a.m., looking into some of the Mexican resort towns, especially Cozumel. After researching it, it looks like we could afford it (and when it comes down to it, we're only going on a honeymoon once). So I'm wondering if anyone has had any good, or bad, stories about down there.

If you're looking to be wined and dined and sitting on the beach the all-inclusive resorts in Mexico are probably a good deal, although I haven't been to one. If you're interested in a more cultural experience, I bookmarked this article about a vacation in a rural, non-touristy part of Mexico a long time ago since it sounded cool to me. Might be worth reading:

My husband and I took a Carnival Cruise down through Mexico and I must say the trip was well worth the cost. You are right you only go on a honeymoon once so do something that you will treasure. We had no problems while we were down there and even had the chance to go to lovers beach and a tour of a couple real world tequila factories where everything is still done by hand. It was really neat.
I also had a friend who went down with her boyfriend and they stayed at a resort and said it was wonderful having everything taken care of. The only problem they ran in to was to stay away from drinking the water and do not get drinks with ice in them including blended drinks. One of them had a stomach bug for a few days. But the culture difference is so worth the trip. You will be amazed to see how they live. Oh ya and watch out for all those little children with the chicklet gum they will corner you and if you give one money you better be prepared to give them all something.
Where are you looking at visiting? We hit Puerto Vallerta, Cabo, and Mazatlan. (SAorry if I missed the spelling on any of those, it has been 3 years since we were there.)
Let me know if you have any other questions about Mexico I will do my best to help answer them.
Congrats!!

If you are planning to go to Mexico, get your passports soon!! Hopefully you have certified (not notorized) copies of your birth certificates and check with the passport agency on changing Sarah's last name, I just went through the name change with them (we are going in January) and they are PICKY due to homeland security. Because she is not married yet, but will be by the time you go may be tricky so look into it. Most info is available online, even birthcertificate info. You can get photo shots at Ritz camera. It costs closely to $100 a piece for your passport. and not sure about the photos. Passport applications you can get at the Post office. I also had to submit a certified copy of marriage with mine because of the name change so definately start your research, it can take up to 6 weeks for passports (at the earliest) unless there is an influz of applications for the upcoming year it can take longer. Good luck

Don't drink tequila like it's water, even if the tequila is pretty colors. It isn't pretty to leave a trail of puke all over the Yucatan.
Other than that, we had a blast in Mexico. We were in Cancun, and took day trips to Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza. Just incredible. Watch out for the time share people! And if you can, go all-inclusive.

MCGirl: HA!

Yeah, stay away from the tequila. I didn't puke, but I did some pretty stupid stuff...

And watch out for the time-share people.

Everyone has different preferences, but I wouldn't go all-inclusive. But I wouldn't go back to Cancun either...too touristy.
Gotta live on the edge and go somewhere a little more...I don't know...like Mexico?

Have fun either way!!!

My wife and I flew to Cancun several years ago, rented a car, then drove south 60 miles to Tulum. Empty beaches, and with the car, we could take side trips like visiting Mayan ruins in the interior, swim in a cenote, take a trip into the biosphere, snorkel, etc.

And, I see you could still get a cabana on the beach for $10 a night. (We did stay at much plusher accomodations).

I just got back from my honeymoon the other week. I went down to Sarasota, FL and hung out on the beach for 6 days. Drank a lot of rum. Went fishing in Sarasota Bay. Kayaked with alligators. Had a great time. It's not the cheapest place in the world, but our condo was free.

I would recommend going to Chico Hot Springs...the money you will save on airfare, could be used having a great time at Chico.

Yeah, I wouldn't do Cancun (or even Playa) again.

Chico's cool. Fairmont is, too, but a little less rustic than Chico. Elkhorn Hotsprings is WAY rustic, but nice and remote.

If I had to choose of the two hot springs in Montana......I would say hit Fairmont. They have two restaurants...one more family dining and one a little more fancy. They also have a bar/lounge. The pools are open 24hours and they have a waterslide there too! Plus I think the rooms are alot nicer than the ones you get at Chico where you might have to share a bathroom with the rooms next to you! There is also really great room service there. Check into their package deals on their website. www.fairmontmontana.com

A local couple here in Glendive went to Ohio and hit some theme parks with all day passes... had a blast, and I guess it was pretty cheap. Our honeymoon we just stayed home and took time off work - which was great!

We rented a cabin in the mountains at Red Lodge. Just the 2 of us and the wildlife. We sat in the outdoor hot tub and watched the deer, and even saw an Elk very close. Then went in and started up the fireplace and had a romantic dinner! It was a great, fairly reasonable getaway if you if you enjoy the outdoors.

Wondering about the cabins in Red Lodge. Sounds pretty nice. Was that rented from a private party? I haven't seen any advertised, except motels in town.

I'm not sure when your honeymoon is, but you can get some really cheap deals to Hawaii right now until about 2 weeks before Christmas (this is the off season and the costs go way down due to the fact that they are trying to fill up a lot of empty rooms and condos).

Wilbur,
We rented the cabin through one of the realtors in Red Lodge. I can't remember the name, but I beleive I linked to it through the red lodge website. It was fairly resonable, as we got there between the summer site seers and the skiers.

Congratulations on your engagement! I have never been to Mexico so I can't help you out there. My fiance and are going to Switzerland for our honeymoon in April, so we just went through the whole passport application process. I would fill the passport application out online. It saved us a lot of time. It cost about $100 including the photo for each of us. We had heard all kinds of horror stories about the long wait to get them back, but we got them in a month and we didn't pay for the express processing.

I don't think it really matters where decide to go. It is your honeymoon and a trip you will always remember. Congrats!
