As with the rest of the United States, the decision of the FCC to gut net neutrality has me concerned. What as me MORE concerned, however, are the relatively few internet companies we have to choose from that Can and Will exploit it at their earliest convenience.
Most all of us are stuck with either Mid-Rivers or Centurylink. Both companies are more than chomping at the bit for this to pass, just like Comcast, Verizon, and the other monsters.
Consider that these two companies already hold us hostage online. As the world moves further and further to the online world, both companies, especially Mid-Rivers, have capitalized on this.
Mid-Rivers came up with the ridiculous Wide Open No Cap Pay per Gig nonsense. How many people got sticker shock that first time they used the internet and didn't change the netflix settings? Their solution? Tone down the settings. Make the movies less quality. Great. So I bought an HDTV to watch an SD movie because I don't want to pay $3 a movie on netflix above the monthly subscription. Basically, one step forward into technology, two steps back with how we utilize it.
Now, with the FCC gutting net neutrality, it's going to be even worse. Some companies in Eastern Montana depend on the people here and the traffic they are getting to survive. However, unless you want to shell out more money to Mid-Rivers to make sure your site goes faster, you have no hope of getting a fair shake against your competitors. For you gamers, this is basically pay to play. The more you pay, the better chance you have.
Now granted, Mid-Rivers is nothing like comcast, so companies like Twitter, Netflix, and other behemoths won't care. BUT, local companies here in the east need an online presence, social media, etc to get going.
So for everyone's sake, talk to your representatives. Have them fight against the FCC gutting our internet freedom.
