Ed Rohloff, who led Miles City to five state football championships, passes away
BILLINGS — Former Miles City football coach Ed Rohloff passed away on Thursday.
Jeff Regan, Miles City's current football coach, confirmed to 406mtsports.com of Rohloff's passing late Thursday evening. Regan said they had heard Rohloff was not doing well on Wednesday and was keeping in touch with those in Miles City throughout Thursday.
"Just thinking about his family," Regan said over the phone. "I got to play with his son when we were in high school. So they are in my thoughts."
Rohloff coached Miles City from 1978-2003, where he amassed a 217-77 overall record. He won five Class A state championships in that time, with the team being in the title game nine times while making the playoffs in 17 of those seasons. The Cowboys won three straight titles from 1994-1996. When he picked up his 200th victory, he was just the sixth Montana high school football coach to reach that milestone at the time.
Rohloff is a Colorado native, having graduated from Northern Colorado. He also coached at St. Labre and Greybull, Wyoming. He was an assistant college at then Eastern Montana College (Montana State Billings) in 1975. He was a finalist for the Rocky Mountain College head coaching job in 2003.
Regan played for Rohloff, saying his impact in the community was a prevalent one.
"He kind of put Miles City football on the map," Regan said. "We always looked forward to playing for the guy with the cowboy hat when we were kids."
Regan said he last saw Rohloff after they upset then-undefeated Sidney 28-0 on Oct. 13 saying, "He seemed really happy."
Miles City (8-2) is currently on the road to Columbia Falls where they will take on the Wildcats on Saturday in the Class A quarterfinals. Regan said the team is taking Rohloff's trademark cowboy hat with them as a way to honor the former coach and his family.
"He's kind of with us on this trip right now," Regan said.
