Child Marriage in Montana

Senator Eric Moore and others are all about protecting our women and daughters; promising to start legislative action on items the first day he's back in Helena.

Well here's a great place to start-- many people are unaware of the child marriage laws across this country. In Montana, 16 year olds and sometimes younger can be married off. Child marriage disproportionally negatively affects young women and girls.

Let's keep our legislators on task for problems that truly exist in this country. Someone let Gianforte know too. His statements on bathroom policing and transpersons were right in step with the aforementioned senator's comments (both are obviously lacking in education on LGBT issues, bathrooms, and public school policy).

Marriage is an antiquated concept. It should be eliminated in favor of Civil Unions with a three year renewable license. Because this would be a civil action, you would need to be of legal age to participate. A three year CU license elimimnates much of the need for divorce and cockroach, scum-of-the-earth divorce lawyers.

Pastors should not have the power of the State to "marry" people as it violates the separation of church and state. The church is where much of the child bride crapola originates. If you want the speghetti monstor to bless your union, get a pasta to do that on your own time, not the States'.

This experiment is taking place right before your eyes and yet you fail to recognize it?

The social policy of this Country since the Democrats enacted the "War on Poverty" has succeeded in destroying the nuclear family in large segments of the population. Much the same as your "three year renewable license" would promote "don't let the door hit you in the ass".

Where there is no commitment, there is chaos. From that standpoint we have achieved Nirvana.

Child Marriage.

Is this really a problem, say; outside of Utah? Children having children is a universal problem if you need something to hand-wring over.

Richard, there is no need to contact your local, bible thumper or the "Flying Spaghetti Monster". In Montana, if you want your Mom or friend to to perform the service it's as simple as picking up the paperwork, performing the nuptial and returning the signed, paperwork to the courthouse.

Words such as gathered under the eyes of god or as it is written in 2nd thespians verses A thru 17 or in the name of jesus de rosa of Ekalaka are not mandated to solidify a union between two people that feel the need to legalize their union (yes, Wendy, I know how long that sentence is). I have personally attended weddings as described in the first paragraph.

Richard, I do regret, the opportunity to meet has never presented itself. I sometimes worry you have traded one demon for another. As an ordained Dudeist Monk, annointed, by the Dude himself, I am always available for council. Should you desire to take up the mantle of spirituality, start here http://dudeism.com/ordination/, or don't.

If you read the attached article, Oddjob, YES it is a problem outside of Utah. A real problem. One that needs legislative addressing. Hence my bringing it to the Senator's attention (and hopefully Gianforte as well; I also sent the information to Bullock so if he happens to win, some simple legislation could solve this real problem).

And I fully agree with you that children having children is also a REAL problem that needs addressing. And I'm sure we both agree that it isn't as simple a solution as a single piece of legislation; it's a complicated and nuanced problem. Like you, I would love to see movement on this problem as well as lip service from our elected leaders. (We've all read the statistics on teen pregnancy and the economic woes that stem directly from this problem. You would think legislators would be more proactive about tackling this problem which displays a direct correlation between its occurrence and economic loss).

And Oddjob, I do enjoy it when we agree!

I frequently find myself wondering and worrying about trading demons.
