Any interest in a Photography Club?
Posted by Jesse Smith (+417) 7 years ago
I'm just getting into photography and was looking for a photography club to join. After talking to some folks in town I've found there is nothing like that around here, but may be folks interested in joining if a club was started.

I started a facebook group to gauge interest in starting a club that would meet one evening a month to share/critique photos, swap tips, hold photo assignments/contests, plan field trips, etc. etc. etc.

The group would be open to ALL photography skill levels, though we would really cherish anyone with experience that could take some leadership rolls in the club.

If anyone is interested in joining the club and getting it off the ground, please join our facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/...raphyclub/ for more details, planning, etc. or contact me at jessesmith (AT) outlook.com

Thanks for your time!

Thanks Amorette! I'll get a hold of her. So far I think we've got about 13 people in less than 24 hours!

Dark Beer, Join the club. Help it develop however you want it to.

I would join if I were in Miles City, I have a question.

I was going through some old 1950ish pictures and have some of miles city main street etc. However these are negatives, the pictures are long gone.

Question, can I make pictures from old negatives? Hope your club goes well and we see some pictures from ya'll on this site in the future.

Places like this will scan old negatives:

http://www.scandigital.co...ervice.php

That was a random pick from a Google search, so I don't know if they are the best place or not.

Thank you sir, if I get some good pictures of old Miles City I will share them with your club and Miles City. My pictures are from the 40s and 50s. My father started the Miles City Sand and Gravel, it was located just to the east of the Yellowstone bridge.

Thank you again. Wayne

Right next to Parkers Bar, yes Mom and Dad did run it for awhile, after Dad was injured on a construction job. I don't know how
or who they sold it to, I had moved to Dallas.

OK, so we have 21 people who have joined the facebook group, and a couple who have contacted me by email. So we have our first meeting scheduled. The meetings will be the last Monday of the month at 6:00 PM at the Sleep Inn. Below is the meeting announcement as posted on facebook...

Monday, March 28 at 6 PM
Sleep Inn and Suites Miles City
1006 S Haynes Ave, Miles City, Montana 59301

Please join us for our first monthly meeting of the Miles City Photography Club. If you have any interest in seeing a photography club succeed in Miles City, this is the meeting to attend to show your support. As this is our first meeting, it will be primarily about introductions and our goals as a club. But we will still have time for some fun.

If you can, please try to bring a photo that you have taken to share with the group. It can be anything from a portrait, to a still life, a landscape, or even a product photo. Anything at all. It can be something you're proud of, or something you're frustrated with. Plan to tell us a little bit about the photo, what you were going for when you took the photo, and if you achieved your goal or not. After you've presented your photo, the group can (if you wish) offer suggestions, ask questions, etc. We will have a laptop with a larger detached screen, so photos can be in .jpg on a thumb drive, or print if you wish. If you would like, you can also email your photo ahead of time.

Depending on how many people show up, we probably won't get to every photo, but we can start with volunteers and see how far we get. Everyone is free to skip their turn as well, but please do consider bringing a photo so we don't all count on everyone else having one. We expect to have beginners through professionals at the meeting, so improvement and encouragement is our goal regardless of skill level, and no one should feel embarrassed to present their photo.

We will also pick our photo assignment theme for the month, and discuss other activities.

There is no charge to come to the meeting or join the club, so please come check us out, and help this become a reality.

Good news everyone! We have a guest speaker lined up for our first club meeting on the March 28th 6PM at the Sleep Inn.

Dennis Hirning is a member of several camera clubs in Montana, as well as a member of the Photographic Society of America's Board of Directors. Dennis has graciously agreed to drive all the way to Miles City to speak with us about tips and suggestions for starting a club, popular photography club activities, etc. as well as the benefits of our club joining the Photographic Society of America.

I'm pretty excited about this, and I urge anyone who wants to see a photography club succeed in Miles City, to please attend this first meeting to show your interest and support.

I just wanted to remind everyone that this Monday March 28th will be the first meeting of the Miles City Photograph Club. We'll meet at the Sleep In at 6 PM. We have a guest speaker from out of town and will announce the location of our first field trip.

I hope to have a good turnout to get this club off the ground. Please contact me through the facebook group or email address provided in the first post of this thread, if you have any questions. Thanks!

Is this club still going?, and what night do they meet. I do not have a facebook account, and do not see getting one any time soon. If I get no response here I will make a few other calls. Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, normally they meet the last Monday of each month, but may not meet in December, as that is New Years Eve. Meetings begin at 6:30pm and the Church of Christ building in Miles City. You can also check the Miles City Chamber of Commerce cslendar for times and place.

For more information you can call 234-4884 or 852-3539. I also do not use facebook, so I miss seeing some of the submitted photos. They would welcome you to the meetings, and they are getting ready for a show at the WaterWorks Art Museum in June 2018.
