Another Week, Another State Title

One week after the Miles City Mudcats (13U) captured the State Title, The Miles City Allstars (12U) did the same. Miles City defeated Glendive 15-14 (7 innings) on a walk-off single to claim the 12U Cal Ripken East State Title.

Miles City will now send 2 teams to the Regional Tournament in Meridian, Idaho.

Congratulations to those young men! Why did a "State" tournament only have 4 teams?

Great question MilescityFan.

The Cal Ripken 12U State Tournament was split into 2 regions (East/West). The 12U East region has only 4 teams (Miles City, Sidney, Glendive, and Glasgow) that play with 60 feet between bases.

There is another 12U Region that plays with 70 Feet between bases. Hope this answers your question.

And, just to muddy the waters even more, this is the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth league championship, which is a distinct entity from Little League, which is what a lot of people think of when they think 'youth baseball'.

Thanks! Not to take anything away, but why not play the 70 foot base baseball? That makes more sense than playing with just 4 teams. If they are 12 years olds now, next year they move up to 90 feet anyway. Why not take a more gradual step and play 70 feet rather than jumping from 50 to 90 feet in a year? Just askin'?

Probably in the next 2 years we will be moving to 70 foot bases. You are right that is quite a jump from 60 fooot to 90 foot when they will be moving on to Babe Ruth. Good luck today as the 13u allstars will open tournament play at 9:00 am

This is all very intriguing. So many options. So there is a plan in place to have different "levels" of Cal Ripken in Miles City? Who would run that? Where would the different size fields be? Can we just extend the bases at Jaycee field? What does that do to the mound placement? So interesting. Yes, good luck to the young men.

There was another team that was initially scheduled to come as well that backed out so their players could play on a basketball team for the Big Sky State Games.
