No, the editors job is to determine what goes in the paper and how it is laid out. Along with over seeing what the other employees are doing, most editors take on layout for opinion and front page.

Proofreading is difficult under time constraints. We try our best but, sadly, human beings are not perfect. Even in the days of proofreaders, I find typos simply because of human error. Now, if you are perfect and have never made a mistake in your life, then congratulations but the rest of us are imperfect. We try to do our best but the best is not always possible.
