The Custer County Cowboys football team's season opener is tonight at Connors Stadium vs. Powell, Wyoming. Kickoff is set for 6pm. Powell has given the Cowboys a rough time the past two years outscoring the Cowboys 91 - 0. Ouch!

Good luck to the Cowboys tonight and in the upcoming football season!

Powell 7, Miles City 43 with 1:40 left in the 4th quarter.

The "mercy rule" is in effect which means the clock continues to run on incomplete pass attempts, etc.

It's the most wonderful time of the year, otherwise known as Cowboys Football season, so I'm back with a few tidbits (aka Useless Stuff I Know That No One Else Seems To). Enjoy!

- The Cowboys' 43-7 victory over Powell not only snapped the three-time defending Wyoming Class 3A state champions' 27-game winning streak, it also marked Miles City's largest margin of victory in a season-opening contest since the Cowboys started the 1984 season with a 45-0 shutout of Livingston.

- Alec Haughian's double-100 yard game (11-107-3 rushing, 4-108-1 receiving) was the second of his career. The only other Cowboys player to have such a game was Robert Nalewaja (18-100-2 rushing, 5-100-0 receiving vs. Belgrade in 2011).

- With his sixth career 100-yard receiving game, Haughian now has 91 catches for 1400 yards and 14 touchdowns over his career. All four marks are CCDHS records by a wide margin. He is 125 rushing yards shy of becoming the first Cowboy with 1000 yards receiving and 1000 yards rushing in his career. He would become the first Class A player since Butte Central's Jonathan Richards (2007-10) to have have surpassed the 1000-yards standard in both rushing and receiving in a career.

- Matt Blunt had one of the most impressive performances by a Cowboys quarterback in his debut as a starter. Blunt completed nine of 16 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

His stats rank up with other spectacular debuts over the last 15 seasons:

Matt Gittings went 4-8-148-2-1 in his first game in 2001, a 37-12 loss to Sheridan.

Darin Muri did not have a great passing game in his first start in 2003 (a 33-10 victory over Belgrade), going 0-5-0-0-1, but he rushed for 16-170-1 in what was at the time the single-game rushing record for a CCDHS signalcaller.

Blunt's predecessor, Ben Herzog, began his brilliant career in the Cowboys' most recent win over Powell (21-20) by going 14-22-154-2-2 in the 2011 season opener.

Not to take anything away from the Cowboys in the 'Zero Week' game, but Powell has an uphill battle this year.

Holy balls! There's a Cowboy Football story up on the Star's website! And we're only two weeks into the season. Color me shocked - this has to be some sort of record!

Kudos, Josh and Marla! Have a on me! (Just one, Josh. Just one).

The Cowboys won, 47-0.

It's been a great weekend - anytime the Cowboys win and Laurel and Billings Central both lose, life is good. In case anyone is wondering, the last time such an occurrence happened on same weekend was 2005 (Week 7, when BC lost, 21-9 to the Cowboys and Laurel was defeated, 19-13, by Hardin).

Here's another little known fact regarding Billings Central: Prior to Friday's 24-23 loss to Butte Central, only three teams had defeated the Rams since 2005 - Miles City, Dillon, and Frenchtown.

Here's the list of the Rams' losses over the last 10 seasons:

2005 - MC 21, BC 9
2005 - Frenchtown 33, BC 14 (state quarterfinals)
2006 - Dillon 26, BC 21
2006 - Frenchtown 21, BC 19 (state semifinals)
2008 - MC 20, BC 7 (state championship)
2009 - Frenchtown 28, BC 6 (state championship)
2010 - MC 8, BC 0 (state championship)
2011 - Dillon 40, BC 17
2011 - Dillon 44, BC 10 (state championship)
2013 - Dillon 31, BC 14
2013 - Dillon 25, BC 13 (state championship)

Before Friday, the only teams to beat Billings Central in the regular season over the last 10 years are Dillon (2006, 2011, 2013) and Miles City (2005).

The Gazette reported that the Maroons' victory over the Rams was their first since 1998. This is incorrect. Butte Central defeated Billings Central, 49-12 in 1999. The Bishop's Bowl took a four-season hiatus from 2000-03. Billings Central won each meeting between the teams from 2004-13.

Just got a text from a friend who's at the game - Cowboys up 13-7 with 2nd half just underway. Since Cats and Griz both lost today, let's hope the 'Pokes come through.

Cowboys 25, Panthers 27 with 2:56 left in the game. Cowboys just scored a TD but missed the 2-point conversion.

Cowboys tried an onside kick but the Panthers covered the kick at their 47.

Both teams have 2 timeouts left but it doesn't look good for the Cowboys right now.

Great game for the Cowboys tonight beating Hardin 42 - 7. JV's played the whole second half.

Question for someone who knows the rules better than I. On one of the Cowboys' kickoffs the ball went in between the two Hardin returners and bounced into and came to rest in the end zone. Refs blew the play dead before any members of the kicking team reached the end zone. At that point would it not still be a live ball that the kicking team could recover?

It had no impact on the outcome of the game, but I thought it a curious call.

I believe that in high school football if the ball gets kicked into the end zone it is an automatic touchback regardless if someone catches it or it rolls in.

I'm with "ringin10". From what I read in the high school football rules book it seems that it's an automatic touchback if the ball enters the receiving team's endzone. That was news to me.

It becomes a live ball when someone touches it.
