But seriously.

I'd try either the 519 or the Cattle ac.

But that's just me.

Hmmm...I hope this thread doesn't turn into another mud-slinging contest the way the last one about Miles City restaurants did.

If there are no good places to eat, how do you explain my weight gain since I came back to Miles City three years ago. Oh wait, I blame the Texas Club.

If you're out on Haynes, the Stagecoach is decent and has a fun design. There aren't any really good restaurants in Miles City but basic food is available.

Shu, if you like mud the best place is the pig barn out on the fair grounds.

Go to the Airport Inn or the Cellar. There is enough variety in MC. Also, isn't there a place over by Lincoln that is good? I forgot to try Brewsters when I was home, but it can't be all bad either. I would suggest that if you can find sushi, don't eat it.

Good Luck

If you have time, check out Kafe Utza. The pastries are made fresh every morning and the coffee is roasted in-house. I think the website is www.kafeutza.com. I also like the 600 cafe. It's certainly not up-scale, but it has good food and a historic charm.

I second the Kafe Utza stop . . . make it early for the best selection.

I definitely recommend Brewster's on Haines Ave. We stopped there last time I was in town and I was very impressed! (I was also amazed by the amount of pictures they kept from the old Hardee's - lots of memories there!)

Although I haven't had it in awhile, didn't the Trails Inn used to have really good pizza?

Maybe its just me, but if I were weighing the differing opinions of restaurants on an internet discussion board, I probably would place my least amount of confidence in the opinion of the cap locker. But that maybe just me.

I haven't had an opportunity to try Brewsters, but looking forward to it, as I have had a couple of good reports so far from friends....

We've been to Brewsters a few times now and we enjoy it. It's not exactly revolutionary, but the sandwiches are very good and the service is even better. It's a good place to go sit and enjoy lunch.

There are places to get a decent meal in Miles City, no doubt about it. I have a weakness for Airport Inn delights. However, compared to, say, Billings or Bozeman, there aren't the kind of restaurants that get major attention for their magnificent food. We don't have enough of a population to support a really fine restaurant.

Although I would like to see a litte originality here and there, I'm resigned to enjoying what's available. Saves me money and weight not to have a really great restaurant in town!

Thanks gunnnor for your reply to my opinion. Ill be watching for yours next time. I grew up in MC and those two resturants have been there and are STILL there with whopping business. Thanks, Pati

Sorry about the CAPS, I am blind.

Big Al's Sandwich Joint is by far the best thing to eat in Miles City, followed closely by the BBQ place next to the gas station at the end of Main Street and Chubby's.

Slayer: We would all like to welcome you to 2007. On your tour of the current year, you will need to select places to eat that are OPEN!! However, I hear that Little Big Man Pizza place is pretty good.

Deer Slayer, When was the last time you were in Miles City? All three places you listed are gone and have been for quite some time! Just thought you'd like to know.

The last time I was in Miles was June '07. I know that these places are gone...it's too bad as they were all "good eats." I was being sarcastic...although that is sometimes hard to convey on a blog site.

Seriously...my top three Miles City eateries would be 1)the Airport Inn, 2)the Hole in the Wall, and 3) the Chinese place out by the interchange. Honorable mention goes to the Town Pump during hunting season.

Oh, gack. You have no palates. How many of you have know what real cooking is? It does not come in a box (just add water), a freezer bag (microwave for 5 minutes), or a boil-n-serve pouch.

I'd stick to saying Miles City has too much fast food, no representation when it come to fine dining, and some good home style cooking. Home style is where I'd suggest going to eat to a stranger or friends visiting town.

I've had too many hit and miss experiences for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at many of our restaurants.

Your right, MC has no fine dining. Go to a Big City and get your fine dining. We are just commenting on what is good in MC. That's all. Geez. Settle down. You want cloth napkins and two forks and a goblet and chilled wine, go to the cities. Damn, there use to be fine dining there, but thanks to the idiots who burned down those places, you dont have any fine dining. The Airport Inn is consider Family Food and Fun. Not fine dining. the 600 has the best breakfast anywhere. the Denver hashbrowns are worth every mile to come home for. go to seattle and pay $40 for a plate of crap. Just because it's fine dining. pull up that chair and have to be quiet and have a snobby waiter come to your call and hand wave. That is not MC style and hopefully never will be!!

I had cloth napkins, two forks, and a wine goblet at the Cattl-Ac just tonight.

Our waitress was fairly new but quite on her game.

The service was well timed, We never wanted for water or tea, and the atmosphere was agreeable.

The food was actually good. I would have ordered salmon, but the cook didn't now how to make Hollandaise Sauce. (No it was not on the menu, I made the request) I had Chicken Alfredo instead and was quite happy with it. The noodles were only slightly overcooked (compliment),the vegies were done enough, and the overall experience was one of the better I have had in a long time.

I was born and raised in Miles City and I appreciate fine dining. I hate having to drive 300 miles for something really good but I have learned to live with it.

Oh, and I know how to make real Hollandaise sauce. Most places don't serve it anymore because the egg isn't actually cooked so they use a packet to be safe. I also LOVE steak tartare but that has gone by the wayside, too. Sigh.

Patti,

I had breakfast with my whole family at the 600 on Sunday. No complaints at all. My point is not that Miles City is lacking "fine dining" as you seem to think of it. My point is the entire restaurant industry has lost it's chefs and people that know how to cook. We now have fry cooks and people that warm up food that is prepared in a factory somewhere vs. making an entree, or side dish, from scratch. Food Service of America, S.E. Rykoff, and Sysco now decide what will be available and how it is prepared.

That's why I suggested the home cooked type places we still have, like the 600 Cafe. And I do miss Shirley's, too. I had lunch at Ben Franklin yesterday.

If I want fine dining I do it at home. Last night was Lasasgna with fresh marinara, fresh mozzarella, ground beef combined with a touch of Italian sausage, plenty of garden fresh herbs, all layered between homemade noodles 3" wide. I eat with gusto. Damn, you bet!

The last time I had breakfast in the 600 last Thanksgiving, the chicken-fried steak had a nasty grease-hadn't-been-changed-in-a-couple-of-years flavor to it. Wasn't too bad, though, after I got all the breading peeled off...but then, it wasn't chicken-fried steak anymore.

My favorite breakfast in MC still has to be the Matador at the Five Flies...are they still open?

"Oh Gack." HUH!!!

Seriously, Marvin, what you're going to find in Miles City, is that the fast food and franchise restaurants are about the same as the franchises you have at home as far as food quality goes. The few home owned places in town, Stagecoach, 600, Cattle-Ac,Hole in the Wall, etc. are going to have more variety and probably better quality than the franchises. I don't think anyone has mentioned the Boardwalk next door to Conlin's on Haynes Ave. It's owned by the 600 and serves just the evening meal. It has a down home atmosphere and darn good food at reasonable prices.

I don't think you're going to walk into any restaurant in Miles City and get poisoned. It's just a matter of what type of food you're looking for. Good Luck.

"having to drive 300 miles for something really good but I have learned to live with it."

You really need to try the Prime Rib and/or Chophouse which are only 160 miles to the south. Yum, Yum. And they both serve Guinness.

Well, I still enjoy the 600 and yes the Boardwalk, and the Airport Inn. No place can beat em in my book.

I agree with your answer except I would add the Boardwalk as they have really excellent steaks there.
