Well, the word is out: the gangster- and thug-recruiting football coach at MSU is GONE!!! YIPPEE!!! Believe me, after all the embarassing troubles with the law that went with the Kramer tenure, the Bobcat program will be much better off.

Here are the details: http://www.billingsgazett...kramer.txt

Maybe they can hire Bill Snyder to turn their program around. He sure did wonders at K-State! Of course Gary Barnett is probably looking for work.

It's going to be interesting to see how all this plays out. I know a lot of the players are Krammer's boys....I wonder how they are taking this. Also, kind of late to be hiring someone??? Maybe not? Not much time to shape the program the way one would like, I would imagine. Assistant coach as an interm? Who would that be?

Sorry Stone - Van Deist withdrew his name.

Now who will it be? Decision this weekend.

Well, now that Van Deist is out, probably Lennon from No. Dak. will most likely get the job...you never know, though.

Stone isn't far-off on his guess - I'm willing to bet Van Deist had the job if he didn't withdraw. I'm happy though - I'm a Griz fan and speculation is that Coach Hauck is going to leave in the next year or so as soon as a bigger university comes calling. I'd rather Van Diest go to the Griz after Hauck leaves.

From an unbiased opinion (in other words, on neither side of the UM/MSU fence) Van Diest going for the UM job is actually more realistic, Shu, if Hauck leaves. From the outside looking in, I think Montana is better suited to compete for a national championship on a more consistent basis than Montana State. And if you're Van Diest (who's in the NAIA National Title picture yearly at Carroll), why go clean up a mess? Whomever takes the MSU job will have their hands full.

I'll be surprised if Lennon takes the MSU job (assuming it's been offered to him). He's got a pretty good thing going over in Forks.

OTOH, the politics in the UND athletic department may not be so great, so who knows?

You Cats fans should hope for Lennon - he's an outstanding coach.

Cindy, That's what I hear. He was offered the Job and wisely turned it down. When that arrogant prick Hauk leaves Van Deist will take the U job

As one of the few diehard sports fans who doesn't give a rip about the Cat-Griz rivalry, I'd like to say that reading the discussion about who the next MSU football coach will be is a lot like forecasting the results of Wrestlemania. Who cares? It's a second-rate program from top to bottom. U of M has done what it has needed to do in order to be a nationally-recognized and respected team. MSU has not. Until they do, they'll continue to be the red-headed stepchild of Montana D-IAA collegiate athletics.

Be careful what you wish for.

It's a long way from NAIA (i.e. advanced high school football) to DI AA, or whatever DI AA calls itself these days...

Besides, most of the time, when a potential coach "withdraws his name," it means he wasn't selected. Just sayin...

Bob L., No it's not Van Deist has more coaching experience than Hauk could dream of. He coached at U of Wyoming. Hauk's claim to fame is that his brother was a pro player and he was a special, special teams coach. I know the guy- he is an arrogant prick and Van Deist has forgotten more about football than Hauk will ever know.

And the answer is Ash from Des Moines'Drake University.

I was there back in the days when we were a football powerhouse. During my freshman yearI was totally taken with one Johnny Bright until I met him. He was a victim in a horrific football incident during his senior year and we left the Missouri Valley Conference. The measure of his character was he went off to play pro ball in Canada because he preferred to be "a big fish in a small pond." He died in his early 50's and everybody who'd ever known me thought it necessary to send flowers and condolences. Beware of youthful indiscretions.

As for MSU, what does it all mean?

The "Johnny Bright" incident. I remember reading about it - Oklahoma A&M game, no?

Right. It was at th brginning of the footbal season in the fall of 1951,Bright's senior year. Drake had won five gamesin a row and Bright was a contender for the Heisman Trophy when Drake went to Stillwater. Bright, who had led the country in total offense as both a sophmore and a junior, was knocked unconscious 3 times in the first 7 minutes of the game by the same player at the repeated bequest of an Oklahoma coach's screams to "Get that nigger.!" The final assault came when the player broke Bright's jaw after Johnny had handed the ball off. He stayed in the game long enough to throw a 61-yard touchdown play. The Missouri Valley Conference refused to tack any action. Eventually,it led to a number of changes in NCAA football. And two years ago, what is now Oklahoma State apologized to Bright and to Drake University. Whoopee.

I wonder whay became of his attacker,Wilbanks Smith.

As long as he consistantly beats the griz he will be a local legend for a long time.

Mark the slayer's words........"Ash will never beat the Griz in this decade." Meaning...come 2010 the Bobcat's will have a shot a beating the Griz...but it's going to be a long shot even then.

Better fo the Bobcat fans to remember old "straight from the ghetto" Kramer and the little sucess he had against the Griz (what 2 wins in seven years???) It's the most they will have to talk about for a long time.

Deer layer--You'll need to return to the woods. Ash is a fine coach. MSU had better athletes than the Friz. Kramer just never impressed me as a game day coach. Too many let downs in a season.

The cupboard isn't bare, The Cats will continue to surge.

And Reed...Every man should know his strengths. Stick with the Miles City vs. Glendive rivalry when spouting off.

Tell me how I'm wrong, Pluto. Believe me, I'd like to pull for MSU, but I can't think of a reason to. They have a good track team, but when it comes to football or basketball, they're really not in the same league as U of M. I'm not saying this as a biased fan - just a neutral observation. It's not my doing that they consistently bring knifes to gunfights.

Thanks Bob L.

The assaulter grows up to be an Exxon executive and lives happily ever after.

The assaulted has to take a 2nd job to live a middle income life and dies a tragic death at an early age.

As for behavior excused because "that was the attitude at the time..." Poppycock. Drake had its own unacceptable racial attitudes and practices I went there. The most astounding was the warning my roommate and I were given on our first morning I arrived there svared and alone. "You're the first Negro girls to live in the dormitory. Your behavior will determine if any others do."

Cute.

I was one of those who was expected to quietly accept my unequal place as an American. I was 17 years old. I stood up and I spoke up. I'm shocked still that I wasn't booted out. In fact, I was often times treated better than I deserved. There is never an excuse for unprovoked violence and barbarism.

My husband was the target in the Glendive Incident five years earlier. The Montana high schoolers were far more civilized.

(what 2 wins in seven years???)

Actually it was 3. (There was a 3 out of 4 stretch, and the Cats have 3 of the last 5)

Just another example of G(r)iz fans' tendency toward exaggeration and living in the distant past

Yes, the Grizzly faithful must be eating CROW about now...I think they should rename the annual Bobcat-Grizzly game as the "Thug Bowl".

Christ....it was only a matter of time. It's too bad, because Wilson was a solid player...he will be missed this season.

Bottom line for any team is the old saying..."You can take a person out of the ghetto, but you can't take the ghetto out of the person."

Hate to say it, but murder and drugs are part of life in the black culture (as it is in other communities as well). I see it every day with the kids I teach.

I doubt Hauck will get fired like Kramer did, but it makes you wonder why MT schools are picking these kids up? Kramer was the master of it, and Hauck appears to be doing the same thing.

By the way...it doesn't suprise me that it happened to the Griz...time will tell if we'll have 5 more players arrested in the upcoming months to match up to the Cats.

One last thing, and then I'll shut up.....

No one knows what really happened. The investigation is still taking place. There's a chance he killed the guy in self defense....no one knows (expect Wilson and the girl that was there) what happened.

So before I or anyone else says something that is really stupid...we should probably wait to see what the facts are.

>>it makes you wonder why MT schools are picking these kids up?

I'm not much of sports fan (I could live a full and contented life if the UM did away with intercollegiate sports altogether), so I don't follow the ins and outs of Montana's college sports scene enough to know for certain where the problem lies.

But, it does seem to me that it has to do with certain University officials and some sports-oriented alumni, who insist upon the state having nationally ranked teams at what seems to be almost any cost. And in that respect, Montana's schools don't seem all that different from other programs around the country that place a very, very high value on winning.

Perhaps it goes back to the debate of whether or not these young men should be recruited solely for their talents as athletes or for their potential as student-athletes. Is a program to be judged a success based only on the number of games it wins - or for the number of young men who graduate from the school with (legitimately) earned degrees?

DANG - this news on Jimmy Wilson really sucks!

Here I was envisioning a group of Griz fans showing-up at the next 'Cat-Griz game dressed in orange prison overalls, leg irons and handcuffs with "MSU Bobcat Football" stenciled on their backs, with one of the bunch even dressed in drag for comic effect...I guess this scratches THAT plan! UM doesn't have that to hold over the heads of MSU fans anymore with this incident. OUCH!

Slayer, I'll agree with you on a couple things: one reason this stinks is because, as you said, Wilson was an awesome defensive player, so the loss will be felt. Also, we should see what the facts are before saying too much, you're right there.

I WILL say this, though. I don't expect this one incident would get Coach Hauck fired from his job, but it COULD put a stain on his resume' and hurt his chances of going to a "bigger and better" university after next season, which he has openly said he aspires to do a few times...a place of similar status to Stanford (he interviewed there last year) may not want him after an incident like this, even if it gets proven as self-defense or whatnot.

I'll agree with one other thing - Griz just need 5 more arrests and THEN we'll be caught-up with the 'Cats...I hope not, though.

LET'S BEHAVE, BOYS!!!
