In a different forum which has been wrecked beyond all recognition and salvation, Wendy Wilson said something that caught my eye..

"What makes me laugh is that these conspiracy nuts believe that the U.S. government has the brains to orchestrate these elaborate schemes." Ms. Wilson said...

The thought occurred to me (and to other conspiracy nuts as well. I can't take all the credit.) what happened to the 20 people who were evacuated from the compound in Benghazi and why hasn't Congress and/or the media been given any information as to who they are, what they were doing in Benghazi and what did they see prior to, during and after the attack?

You know. The kind of witness interrogation process that usually goes on in murder investigations.

You can't make this stuff up, either.

Kind of makes you wonder where all these conspiracy nuts come from, doesn't it?

Your thoughts....?

"The U.S. effort in Benghazi was at its heart a CIA operation, according to officials briefed on the intelligence. Of the more than 30 American officials evacuated from Benghazi following the deadly assault, only seven worked for the State Department. Nearly all the rest worked for the CIA, under diplomatic cover, which was a principal purpose of the consulate, these officials said."

There are generally two kinds of conspiracy theorists. The first one takes an example of either government incompetence or government secrecy (and governments do keep secrets, sometimes for good reasons, sometimes for stupid reasons) and makes it out to be more significant than it usually is.

The second kind are the sad, ignorant people who think because they have discovered some vast conspiracy that smart, well-educated, successful people know is crazy, they have one up on those smart, well-educated successful people and it makes them feel better about themselves. These are the moon landing deniers and the Holocaust deniers and now the tragedy in Connecticut deniers. They don't notice either how cruel (Holocaust) or how stupid (moon landing) their ideas are. They just think they are in a on a Sooper Special Secret and that makes them superior to those who, you know, actually are smart, well-educated and successful.

There is also the third class. These are people with mental illness who need help.

I mostly feel sorry for all of them.

Conspiracy is a concept that I have herd for many years. I worked in the intelligence arm of our federal govt. for over 20 years and I can assure you that all these "conspiracy" ideas, and nuts are just that only ideas and/or nuts. It amazes me to see and hear these people start to formulate concepts that simply are not true. I was in the local laundry matt the other day doing my wash and here this lady starts to tell me how the 9-11 stuff was a fake and ecetra, ecetra...I know from personal knowlege that the 9-11 was real and not some concocted up plan by our govt. to create a story. If you buy into this crap then you are for lack of other words "an idiot" to even think such. The Lybia stuff, I have been there in my capacity as an intelligence officer and I assure you nothing illegal went on. What did happen is that Obama's State Department was presurred to release information before the were ready to do so. This occurs more often than not with any govt. agency. I remember when I was assigned to work with FEMA for a year and we would handle disaster issues, before we as an agency could get the information together to be able to present a accurate synosips of the events of a disaster here is the media pressing for information about the event itself. People it is like a car accident, let the people who are working for the authorities etablish the problem and be able to comment on the event with better facts. Instead the media presses individuals and then guess what, bad information gets released and then look at what we have. It appaules me that we are a nation with about 50 percent of it that is impatient and would rather have a inaccurate story so they can bitch about it later when it gets corrected. I can not stand Obama, but I can assure you he was not covering anything up. The culprit is the media itself, Espically ABC, NBC, CBS, and lets not dare forget CNN. Yes I left FOX news out of it and here is why. Contray to everyones belief I did a research project on the news media while in college and found that FOX news actually has a higher accuracy rate in the stories reported than any other of the 4 major Televison news agencies. This was verified by the national independant news research organization. The reason the other 4 networks do not like FOX is b/c FOX is managed and owned by Republican's and the others are Democratic owned and ran news outlets. Hummmmm want a conspiracy to think about, there is one for you? Conspiracy, is way over used.

Interesting. I found Dan Rather's book regarding the networks rather authentic. Remember, he lost his job with CBS for telling the truth? Marc Cuban hired him for XStv.com and all he asked was to tell the truth. Something that is controlled by all of the other networks. I think the most fun now is getting the news from Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert as they debunk the garbage:-) Just sayin'!!

Agree totally Jeri...To say Fox News is the most accurate of all networks in our nation is the most ignorant statement I have ever heard as they are obviously the propaganda arm of the GOP...to say they are anything else is foolish...My go to folks are Jon Stewart and Colbert...they are the only ones that have the guts to call it as they see it...

OK David. I'll give you the spooks. Obviously they were there doing something other than intelligence gathering, but even at that, I see no reason for them to be immune from being deposed on the incident and the relevant facts made public.

That leaves the keyboard punchers, cork-sniffers and cooks from State. What stretch of the imagination makes these bureaucrats immune from recounting the events of the day?

Amorette, I agree there are different categories of conspiracy nuts and I don't think you have to be particularly smart, well-educated and successful to sort out the whack-jobs (9/11, moon landing, Roswell, for those that need help on that) from those that take a few facts (or lack of facts) and make up a story. What I am astounded by is how these allegedly smart, well-educated, successful people seem to be perfectly happy sucking up whatever story their favorite politicians choose to make up; like "spontaneous demonstrations" and "outrage over movies".

Finally Dave, you will never know how reassuring it is to know that you were in Benghazi last summer and are absolutely positive that Obama wouldn't cover anything up. I'll sleep tonight.

You had me until Faux News. Rupert Murdoch created the network to be a mouthpiece for the Republican party. If you want a conservative slant, may I recommend the National Journal. Very much Republican (their headline on the day after the election was how well positioned was Paul Ryan for 2016) but very well-written and actually an intelligent look into the conservative mindset.

I am also a fan of the BBC, the Guardian, (both UK) and Al Jazeera. I also like the Kenya News Service to check up on what is going on outside of our northern European bubble. I haven't watched news on TV in years. I don't even know who the talking heads are for the networks any more. Once Uncle Walt left, tv news went downhill.

Actually, what killed tv news was getting rid of the news divisions and folding the news into the entertainment divisions. Thank you, Roone Arledge. Faux News is pure entertainment. Based on what I catch from Comedy Central, pretty funny stuff, too.

However, you are right that rushing to get the 'scoop' is often the cause of mis-information being tossed out. That is the result of our 24/7 'news' cycle. People are desperate to 'know' what happened, even if the info is inaccurate.

Wow I am amazed at just how little so many people know how the big picture works. I have worked in extremely high levels of govt. over my years in service and to be honest there are so many people that have no clue what is going on and yet think that they do a make statements and comments about them and really don't know what they are talking about. I deal in facts and that is all, that was my job in national intelligence and trust me the news media most often has the story completely screwed up. Two reasons, someone pointed out they want the scoop so bad they just report before having all the facts, and the other reason is that incorrect stories are put out on purpose. I know this b/c I was one of the people that used to put out incorrect stories for national security reasons, that most people would not even understand why. Trying to explain would not work, b/c the majority of the population don't even understand how the world works and even how their own government is structured. A good example is that had people wanted to stop the fiscal cliff matter then they could have back on Nov 4th when the votes were cast, but no they wanted the same ole thing so they voted to keep all 3 branches of the govt the same. I feel like you are getting what you wanted. You voted to keep the same balance of power in all 3 branches of govt so what can you expect, the mere fact of that alone sends messge that you are happy with Washington. Don't bitch now, this is exactly what you wanted. There were clear choices and yet decisions that were made soley on what a media outlet reported is how people would vote. I researched the elections in detail and the following were found to be facts:

1. The highest populations areas on food stamps voted Democratic
2. The highest populations areas on TANF also voted Democratic
3. 29 republican governors have balanced budgets.
4. There are 29 state with republican governors.
hummmm they are doing something right!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sick of the damn liberals that do nothing but spew untruths and hate and lies and crap that I am to the point if it were up to me I would tell them if they don't like it here then get the hell out of MY COUNTRY. I am so sick of the lies.

Oh let me throw all this tid bit of data out. You people that think Romney is against the auto manufactures put this in your pipe and smoke it.......the foreign auto makers that have plants here in our country did not have plant shut downs and guess what none of them are unions.....hummmmm imagine that......unions are fine, but they are the also killing business. I noted that only BBC and FOX news did report this information prior to the elections, but the other major networks did not find it worth reporting...why? simple b/c it would not have made their canadiate "Obama" favorable looking. this is a prime example of how the media has thier own agenda.

Now for all you folks that think I dont know what I am talking about here are my credintials. I worked in national intelligence for 15 years, 4 of which were in the white house, 2 years with the secret service, 2 years with FEMA/SBA, 3 years as a small business owner that did over 3 million in my first year in business, then 5 years working for the 2nd largest media group in the nation. Also have a degree in political science/criminal justice. So I do know what I am talking about. I have traveled to 43 states, and 29 countries.

not that anyone cares, but I did want to let you know I do know the facts and what I am talking about.

Montana has, and had a democrat for a governor. Montana has a balanced budget. Someone who has posted on this thread is either a dumbass, a liar or a lying dumbass.

Benghazi is a 'conspiracy theory' because the GOP sees it as an oppurtunity to score political points. That's it.

Were errors made there?

Probably.

Were CIA agents and other intelligence officials around.

Yes. Just like at most embassies.

Some conspiracy theorists are a combination of all three types Amorette discussed.

.It's Official: Watching Fox Makes You Stupider
Ben Adler on May 21, 2012 - 8:04 PM ET
People who work at Fox News might like to think that they are despised by real journalists only because they are conservative and most journalists are liberal. Anyone who read the admiring obituaries of William F. Buckley Jr. in mainstream and liberal outlets would know that is nonsense. Journalists, both liberals and ones with no ideology in particular, are quite capable of respecting conservative pundits and reporters who deserve their respect.

But Fox does not. The reason is not because it holds a set of values that others may not share. And that is only partially because it claims to be "Fair and Balanced" when it is neither.

Rather, it is because it fails the fundamental test of journalism: are you informing your audience? According to a new study by Farleigh Dickinson University, Fox viewers are the least knowledgeable audience of any outlet, and they know even less about politics and current events than people who watch no news at all.

Respondents to the survey were able to answer correctly an average of 1.8 of 4 questions about international news and 1.6 out of 5 questions about domestic affairs. "Based on these results, people who don't watch any news at all are expected to answer correctly on average 1.22 of the questions about domestic politics, just by guessing or relying on existing basic knowledge," said Dan Cassino, the poll's analyst.

"The study concludes that media sources have a significant impact on the number of questions that people were able to answer correctly," wrote Cassino and his colleagues. "The largest effect is that of Fox News: all else being equal, someone who watched only Fox News would be expected to answer just 1.04 domestic questions correctly-a figure which is significantly worse than if they had reported watching no media at all. On the other hand, if they listened only to NPR, they would be expected to answer 1.51 questions correctly."

This should come as no surprise if you follow Fox. Consider some recent history. Fox and Friends host Steve Doocy invented a quotation from President Obama completely out of thin air. He falsely claimed that Obama had said he and Michelle were not born with silver spoons in their mouths "unlike some people," in reference to Mitt Romney's privileged upbringing. In fact, Obama did not say "unlike some people" and he has been using the silver spoon line for years. Several other news outlets repeated Doocy's assertion as fact and Doocy initially avoided correcting the record after it was revealed he was wrong. Eventually he admitted that he "seemed to misquote" Obama, instead of stating that he did, in fact, misquote him. And he did not apologize for the error.

When Fox isn't inventing smears against Obama, it uncritically regurgitates corporate-funded lies about him. Consider a segment of Sean Hannity's show from last week. He showed a TV commercial by Americans for Prosperity, a conservative group founded and funded by the Koch brothers, that attacks President Obama's record on investing in renewable energy. Hannity and Frank Luntz praised its effectiveness, with Luntz saying, "It was fact-based, not assertions. You see the facts come up on the screen. There's specific numbers."

The only problem is that the factual assertions are incorrect. The ad says that "80 percent of taxpayer dollars spent on green energy went to jobs in foreign countries." But the article it cites as a source clearly states only that the money went to foreign firms. The bulk of American tax dollars spent on the subsidies, according to Politifact, went to American subsidiaries of the firms.

The ad goes on to offer specific examples: "$1.2 billion to a solar company that's building a plant in Mexico. Half a billion to a car company that moved American jobs to Finland. And $39 million to build traffic lights in China. President Obama wasted $16 billion on risky investments." I won't bore you with all the details of how each of these claims is untrue; each has been labeled false or mostly false by Politifact or Factcheck.org and you can go to Media Matters for the full rundown.

Hannity routinely takes Republican misinformation as the gospel truth. To choose just one particularly embarrassing example, he let Herman Cain's spokesman Mark Block declare, absurdly, that a woman named Karen Kraushaar who accused Cain of sexual harassment was the mother of a Politico reporter named Josh Kraushaar. Hannity did not challenge either the veracity of this claim nor question why this "fact" would cast doubt on Politico's thoroughly reported revelation that Cain has been repeatedly accused of sexual harassment. In fact, Josh Kraushaar had left Politico for National Journal over a year before the story even ran, and he is not related to Karen Kraushaar. It would have been easy for Hannity to check on these facts and correct Block's assertion, but he did not. Here is what Josh wrote about it the next day:

Anybody with Internet access would, at the very least, been able to figure out that I haven't worked for Politico since June 2010-and have been working at National Journal since then. I even Tweeted the fact that I wasn't related to Karen Kraushaar earlier that evening before Hannity's show to clear up any potential confusion.

That didn't stop Block. When I heard what Block had said on Hannity's show, I immediately e-mailed him informing him of his mistake. I still haven't heard back.

This laziness, partisan hackery and lack of regard for basic accuracy is what separates Fox News from outlets that merely have opinions. And it is doing their audience a disservice. This Fairleigh Dickinson study is not the first to find that Fox News viewers are the most ill-informed of any news consumers. As of November 22, 2011, Think Progress had found seven studies showing Fox News's viewers to be the worst informed of all news consumers. In a post about a report that had just come out in the International Journal of Press/Politics, by communication scholar Lauren Feldman of American University and colleagues which found that "Fox News viewing manifests a significant, negative association with global warming acceptance," Chris Mooney cited six previous studies with similar findings.

I identified 6 separate studies showing Fox News viewers to be the most misinformed, and in a right wing direction-studies on global warming, health care, health care a second time, the Ground Zero mosque, the Iraq war, and the 2010 election.
I also asked if anyone was aware of any counterevidence, and none was forthcoming. There might very well be a survey out there showing that Fox viewers aren't [emphasis in original] the most misinformed cable news consumers on some topic (presumably it would be a topic where Democrats have some sort of ideological blind spot), but I haven't seen it. And I have looked.

In the last year, since Fox News fired Glenn Beck and has sought to line up behind more establishment Republican candidates such as Mitt Romney, the new conventional wisdom has been that Fox is tacking back to the center. As a purely strategic move within the Republican party, that may be true. But, unfortunately, this has not been correlated with any improvement in the quality or independence of its journalism.

I also do not believe you have the inside scoop on the Iraq War, although I'm sure you think you do.

What I am saying is that the people with the highest intelligence do agree with what I have said. Most think I am crazy at first but if intelligent they think and do a little research and over time they begin to realize that the Cactus Plains knows what he painfully is screaming about. Some know I am right because they are part of the communistNazis plot to overthrow America, which they have already done ... you just don't know it?

I said the weather was controlled and they were spraying diseases in a letter to the Governor in 1999 or 2000 ... sorry but the TRUTH!
that letter is on my website under SEIR

Hmmm....how can I be disrespectful, when my quoted post starts out with me stating how respectful I was of Mr. Herring's service to our country?

And yes, I do talk like that to people in real life. Ask my friends and family.

Calling some ignorant fool a white cracker dumbass really isn't that much different than Governor Schweitzer calling the Tea Party Republicans bat crap crazy, in my opinion.

The kooks who think Sandy Hook was a government scheme to bolster the calls for gun control are consipiracy nuts. The idjuts who are harrassing this man are just plain procreatin' conspiracy crazy.

http://news.yahoo.com/blo...33813.html

After reading that, I'm convinced the best form of gun control for any 2nd Amendment Groupie capable of such idiocy would be to shove the barrels of their guns up their hindsides so far the sun ain't ever gonna shine on them again.

I'm sorry. I think the webmaster should ban anyone on this site who gives any credence to the idiotic conspiracy theories in regard to the Sandy Hook Massacre.

But they're so amusing. I think things like this should be allowed
just so we can realize there are really people out there who believe this stuff

I guess the point I haven't seen yet is that IF the Newtown shooter's mother hadn't believed in conspiracy theories and IF she hadn't stocked up on all her mass murder weapons her son MIGHT not have had the weapons to shoot all those innocent people.

Believing in conspiracy theories is something crazies do. And their behavior as a result of their beliefs is what causes such tragedies.
