GRIZ WIN in '07!!!!!!
Posted by deer_slayer (+486) 16 years ago
And here's the reason why......

J.D. Quinn
Born: 02/23/1986
Height: 6' 4"
Weight: 301.6 lbs.
Year: Junior
Major: Sociology
Hometown: Garland, TX
Previous School: U of Oklahoma/Garland HS

Prior to UM: A transfer from Oklahoma, J.D. has been at UM since this past fall ... started four games as a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma in 2005 ... did not play last season due to NCAA sanctions ... a standout football player at Garland High School, where he lettered four times in football, three times in baseball, and once in track ... a two-time all-state, all-district and all-city selection in football as a prep ... voted his team's "Lineman of the Year" as a senior when he had 104 "pancake" blocks ... team captain and All-American in football as a senior.

Word on the street is that J.D. has a bit of a mean streak and is pretty upset about the whole Oklahoma fubar. It's going to be a long year for Big Sky Defensive Linemen.

I am hoping I will be there....it depends on if my 8th grade girl's basketball team that I'm coaching makes it to the city championship or not. It would be unethical of me to want my team to lose, just so I could party in MC for Bucking Horse...but then again I have never had the best of ethics. If I make it Bob, I'll be standing outside of the Bison for Sat. morning's parade.

Study: 96-Percent of UM Sports Fans Have No Idea How Annoying They Are

According to a study set to be released today by the Center for Sports Research, a whopping 96-percent of UM sports fans have no idea how unbelievably annoying they are to those who are not supporters of the Griz.

"It's amazing. The vast majority of these people actually think that they behave just as any other fans do, and that people who have a problem with them are simply jealous," said the study's director, Dr. Michael Kreager, a Princeton sociologist. "When in fact, almost all UM fans have become obnoxious Grizholes of the highest order."

The study found that UM fans are woefully lacking in knowledge of how to respectfully conduct themselves when one of their teams wins. But worse, they revel in their boorish behavior and seem to find more enjoyment in flaunting their good fortune in the faces of others than they do in sincerely celebrating and relishing their teams' achievements.

"This behavior has been festering for awhile," said Dr. Kreager. "By harping on and on about how great their team is, as though they are the reason for it, UM fans have actually started to believe they are more important than fans of other schools and therefore deserve to win more. When in fact, all they are are crappy fans of a great program."

Hailing from the Big Sky Conference, UM has enjoyed massive success on the football field, but it's not as easy to make a mark in basketball. During the 2005-06 NCAA tournament the Griz did just that by beating Nevada to advance from the first round It wasn't much, but it was enough to make a vicious cocktail that transformed even the most subdued and casual UM sports fan into an obnoxious, drunken meathead, unbearably annoying to anyone with different rooting interests.

"I wanted to be happy for these people when the Griz won, but I found it impossible," said Dan Miller, a Boston native who now lives outside Missoula. "Before I could even congratulate any of my friends or acquaintances they got up in my face, yelling and screaming and saying how my favorite teams suck, or leaving messages on my cell phone gloating about it. So instead of being a mild supporter of UM teams, now I hate them with every fiber of my being. Same with most of their fans."

The study also found that some 89 percent of UM fans believe they are the most knowledgeable fan base in the world, when in reality they are no more savvy than any other.

"We found this to be most evident in relation to their football team," said Dr. Kreager. "Until they won the National Championship in 1995, most Montanans barely paid attention to UM football, but now - thanks to the Griz making the playoffs every year for over a decade - they seem to believe they invented the game or something and that their stadium is the epitome of all things football. Of course, once the Griz inevitably start struggling some day, we expect most of their fans to ignore them again."

Predictably, the ever-belligerent and cantankerous UM fans do not agree with the study's findings.

"That is wicked stupid, yo. People are just jealous. Griz envy! What - did some Kittie fan make up that study? Probably, `cause the Kitties suck!" said Tommy Reilly, a 27-year old drive-thru cashier and UM grad. "Yeah, that's right. You heard me. The Kitties suck!"
---------------------------------------------------

Sorry deer_slayer...couldn't resist.
With Lex back and most the defense from last year, they'll be a favorite to will it all again this year.
Oh, and with the first three games against Southern Utah, Fort Lewis and Albany, they'll probably go undefeated.

First of all, let me say HEY TOMMY! I haven't seen you in years - hope all's well with you.

Secondly, as a UM Graduate and Griz fan myself, I won't deny that obnoxious fans abound in Missoula and in other places where the Griz show-up to play and, of course, I will offer a disclaimer that these Griz fans DO NOT represent ALL of us...but the same is the case for a number of other places, too.

I can't help but wonder how extensively this Dr. Kreager researched other universities before publishing this report. I have read reports on instances such as riots breaking-out in places like Coral Gables, Minneapolis and Amherst when a team won or lost; cars being overturned and set afire, buildings vandalized, and multiple fistfights breaking-out between rival fans. Does this report specify how Dr. Kreager compiled his data? Did he survey every Griz fan, or just a "random sample"? If it's the latter, then in my view the report has no credibility.

I also strongly disagree with this allegation of his:
"We found this to be most evident in relation to their football team," said Dr. Kreager. "Until they won the National Championship in 1995, most Montanans barely paid attention to UM football, but now - thanks to the Griz making the playoffs every year for over a decade - they seem to believe they invented the game or something and that their stadium is the epitome of all things football."

I personally attended every Griz home game from 1987 to 1991, and I can tell you that EVERY game had a packed stadium with most of them sold-out. This, of course, was a couple years before Dickenson and company won their first national title. some Griz fans may be obnoxious, but the last thing we are are bandwagon-jumpers.

In short, I'm not trying to make excuses with the "other fans of universities do the same thing or are worse" cop-out, but if this Princeton Sociologist bothered to expand his research to a few other university sports communities, he's likely find the same thing.

Okay...I figured I should post this now so everybody doesn't thnik I'm hiding from the fact that another Griz CB has been arrested. Tim Parks...was arrested for domestic assault charge when he slapped up his girlfriend and put a gun in her face because she owed him money. From what I read on the griz message board...this guy was part of the whole "CB Posse" that included murderer Jimmy Wilson and fellow crony Quentin Jackson, who was also kicked off the team for disorderly conduct. Hopefully with this latest arrest, the Griz CB saga will come an end.

On a more positive note....WE ARE NUMBER ONE!!!!!!!!! New poll released today.

Slayer,

First of all, if you are now married I'll say CONGRATS! and welcome to the "world of the wed."

Secondly, it was Qwenton Freeman that got booted from the team for disorderly conduct, not Jackson...for whatever that's worth.

Third of all, yeah, it's STILL embarassing when an athlete at a school you support gets out-of-line with his behavior (I don't like it when it happens at MSU, either, as I root for them when they are NOT playing the Griz). This probably won't have much effect on the team, however. Parks, as I understand it, was on injured reserve for the year, so he wasn't playing anyway...

...the incident sounds almost identical to what happened in the early-90's with former MSU b-ball player Williard Dean. Kinda creepy.

I'd say something to the effect of BEHAVE BOYS, again, but they never do.

PS Brian: to my knowledge, yes, Barry is still "Benny the Bull".

Posted by Shu (+1794) 16 years ago
Pretty cool-looking design, Slayer...I do like it...but...

the only problem I, for one, would have with it is that there are already too many teams who use an animal's paw on the helmet...wolves...cats of some kind...bears, etc.. It's "been there, done that." by a number of teams.

When I was a student at UM they had the "UM" logo on the helmet and I thought that sucked...then they put in the scripty "Griz" logo that they still have today and the first time I saw it I remember thinking "yeah, that's it!"
Top
Posted by deer_slayer (+486) 16 years ago
I hear what you are saying about "been there, done that" I just think the griz paw print is sweet. I was in Anchorage once at a park where a griz had just been and it left paw prints all over the trail. Super cool to look at. Actually, I wish the paw was some where on the jersey...like the shoulders instead of the new design with the stripes. That being said I just ordered the new away jersey yesterday.

And they're not the No. 1 team in the FCS. I managed to see a half of the opener, and while defensively, they are incredible ... the offense is too inconsistent. And the Weber St. game confirms that. Biermann is a man-child on the line, and the other 10 work very well together.

I believe Eastern Washington was one of the teams expected to contend with the Griz for the Big Sky title...them, MSU and Portland State, as well. So, we got the Eagles!...but it wasn't pretty.

E. Wash had the better game statistically, but not the better game where it most counted (the scoreboard, of course). It's been mentioned here and elsewhere that the Griz have work to do on offense. I suppose if Hilliard was more healthy (he's having a problem with his shoulder) it would help. Perhaps going after Sac State next week will help them work some of that out? I hope so. The Bobcats go to Cheney to play E. Wash next week...that game should tell us something more about league competition.

Elsewhere, I am SO relieved that my ND Fighting Irish FINALLY won a game!!! They got UCLA at the Rose Bowl, YES!!! The knock on ND is that the Bruins were playing a 3rd-string walk-on QB after their starter got hurt, but I'll take a win however I can get it at this point!

Posted by deer_slayer (+486) 16 years ago
Looking back at the UM v EW game...I think it came down to the fact that EW's QB looks really good (much better than Berquist) and our CB's aren't very good. 1st degree murder charges have a tendency to mess things up. Last year Jimmy Wilson had three interceptions vs EW. This year, Wilson had two beatings and a pillow biting incident in the county jail while he awaits trial. The Griz better get Cole on track or we'll end up losing in the playoffs again. I think he is a good runner...Griz need to utilize his speed a little more.

One last thing...Hauck is not one to show all his cards early in the season. Chances are he is waiting for some big games late in the year before he shows us the real Montana pass defense. Or I could be wishful thinking. Can't wait to see what happens when MSU plays EW this upcoming weekend.

Griz won again this weekend and slipped to #3, which is fine with me. As long as they keep winning...which they will...they will end up a #1 or #2 seed by the end of the year and lock in the home field advantage for the playoffs.

WOW - the offense FINALLY came-alive!!! Not a moment too soon.

Granted, it was 52 points against winless Northern Colorado, but the point is I've been looking for more signs of life on offense so there it is!

I'll be interested to see how well that offensive explosion carries-over to the next couple weeks - if they have a similar showing against NAU, or at least 30 points or more, THEN we'll know the offense has turned the corner like we hoped they would.

The offense did look good. After watching the Griz for a few weeks now, it would appear that their biggest problem is a lack of team speed on offense. It's too bad we don't have Craig Chambers this year. That guy was super fast. I heard his shoulder is hanging on by a thread, and his playing days are over.

The bright spots last week I thought were 1. the offensive line, those guys finally look like they are gelling together, and 2. the receivers finally made some catches, some of which were amazing.

Can't wait to watch NAU this weekend. I think the Griz will have their best game of the year. Not talking about a blow out, although that could happen. Talking about getting a solid victory against a decent opponent.

By the way I will be cheering on MSU in my Griz gear in Greeley this Sat....even though UNC is my other alum.

Looks like the game against Portland State was somewhat of a shootout, but they came-out on top. PSU's young QB is gonna be a great one - he already looks good.

Meanwhile in Bozeman, the 'Cats season continues to nose-dive as they drop their first at home to Northern Arizona. From the conference standings, it would appear that NAU and East. Wash. will battle for second place and a possible at-large berth to he playoffs...they play each other next weekend.

I think that the criminal activity by some of the members of the football squad is going to focus the rest of the team to kick the george bush out of the bobcats! I'm thinking that it is going to light a fire under their dick chenneys that will result in a monumental thrashing the likes of which Griz Nation has been waiting for all year. Deer Slayer---Let me get this straight...You are counting on the criminal activity of a handful of Griz players to motivate the rest of the team to play well? I think you are grasping at straws.

You remind me of a former Cowboy basketball player that I know. I had to lift him up and carry him on my shoulders, literally, during basketball practice warmups in the early 90's. This kid looked big and heavy, and he even talked a blustery game. Reality, however, was that he was really soft and squishy--just like the Griz.

Bishop---just like the big squishy kid that used to fart on your neck, so will the Griz use the Bobcats as t.p.

That squishy kid must have been tooting an awful lot---we just assumed it was body odor.

I think you are probably remembering the smell of your moist panty liner.

This is my last post.....

Tommy you are a world class sportsman.

Rick Bishop... you suck balls.

To all the Griz fans...drunkie is as drunkie does....

To Miles City Dot Com.... I retire.

Hal, you kick ass...love your history posts. Amazing that you live in AK. Get back to Montana As soon as possible.

To all the "haters".... God bless.

To Ike and Pete...I understand you and respect you...yet I still have the ability to kick your asses... just in case you were wondering. That only means that I am as pissy as you, and I would rather get bent than admit defeat.

To big Rick K....you and I have never met, yet I know that you and I are as different as God is to satan. I wish you and your family the best....enjoy the fruits of our country as much as George Wallace did.

Bob L. you still owe me beer.

And to the rest of you lovely peeps... I hope that all of you enjoy the great blessing that God has bes-towed upon us as much as I have.

Yes I am drunk...but that does not mean that I don't wish you God's speed Miles Citians... as I will never talk to any of you again via this blog site.

I have been fortuitous to have been in y'all's circle for the past few years, I wish you all the best, Stower vs Jordan Street...you know...

the last post of a legend....Griz won again............

deer_slayer

good night and budha bless

Change 4 plays (2 by the Cats, 2 by the refs), and it would have been a different game... oh well, thems the breaks - the beautiful thing about cat-griz is there's always another one next year

deer_slayer, I wish you the best of luck in slaying that rabbit...

On behalf of the entire Emilsson family, I apologize for deer_slayer's shameful behaviour in this thread, especially his drunken rambling post after he drank 36 cans of Coors Light at a Denver sports bar this afternoon. If I can come up with one, just one, miniscule excuse for this impolitic outburst tonight.....well.....let me think.

Okay, here it is.

I think it is because he did not get an elk this year. My buddy, Wapiti Bob, has been acting in a similar manner as of late. Lets all hope Global Warming will end soon.

Bob L. you still owe me beer.

-----------------

BTW, I sent some $$$ to your family in MC - hopefully you get back there this weekend and can procure some beer.

Alas, I will not be in MC. I'm going to party with some drunken Sconnies this weekend instead. Wish me luck, I'll need it.

If this is indeed your mc.com swan song, I wish you well, mi amigo!

P.S. - Certainly nothing is precluding you from returning under a different identity. I may change my name to "Bruce Wayne" someday, who knows?
