I heard through the grapevine that a 20ish year old woman was attacked near the Convent. Beaten severely amung other things. I was just wondering if anyone has heard the same thing. I was told she was walking home at night when it happened. I just wanted to find out if it was just a rumor or the truth, wanted to make sure if it was the word was spread so people could be more cautious since the dark is getting here earlier and earlier.

There has been more than one attack. I know one other individual who has been attacked also from the description by the same person and in the same general area. This attack happened during the day. Women should be careful walking alone till this guy is caught.

A bit of advice for all the gals in our community. Arm yourself with the knowledge of whats going on, and carrying pepper spray might come in handy too.

Pepper spray or a stun gun...any type of personal protection is a great idea...even the ability to knee certain areas of a fellows body....

So what exactly is going on? Does anyone know if the attacker has been caught, a description of who to look out for or what kind of vehicle, etc? It would be helpful to know if the people who were attacked thought they were specifically targeted by someone who had something against them, meaning other women may not be in danger, or was it thought to be a random attack on a random person they saw walking? Were all the attacks in the same area? (and specifically what area)
Did the attacker sneak up on them and grab them, in which case pepper spray or a stun gun likely would do no good, because you wouldnt have the time to react and use it, or was it a person pretending to be friendly and then attacked?
It doesnt do anyone much good to simply know that there is an attacker on the loose, if you dont know what you are looking for. To help other women from suffering the same fate, information like this needs to be shared and spread!
Although I live no where near the Convent, which is where this apparently took place?, I will still be on the lookout around my own home, and I hope everyone else will take the time to look out their windows more often as well, and call the police if you see anything suspicious.

The newspaper said the attack occurred near the Cornerstone Apartments, not the Convent.

Is a "and if you get pregnant it's gods will" comment entirely inappropriate here? It probably is, isn't it?

There is also some confusion over a domestic assault and another attack that both occurred over the weekend. So far, we are just waiting for the police to do their job. Buy the way, screaming like a banshee is the recommended first line of defense. I got that from a fellow who teaches self defense classes.

Evangelicals (or perhaps the better term here is Fundigelicals) don't really understand the Theodicy Event Horizon of their beliefs, and are very puzzled when other people react with understandable horror to their vision of God as a Cancer-inducing, rape-pregnancy-instigating monster.

Now, you COULD try and fly through the needles eye here, and say something like "Well, obviously God didn't CAUSE the rape, but He took the opportunity to make the best of the bad situation, by giving you a baby", to which the appropriate response is "Wait, I didn't WANT a baby, why couldn't He have done something useful like give my rapist a heart attack earlier in the day and saved us all this trouble?"

I am just reading about this attack today and thinking how did I miss this in the paper?
This is very concerning, and as a parent of two teen-age daughters...its frightening.
My thoughts and prayers to the young lady that was attacked and so thankful she is alive.
We live out of town a ways, I do have a friend that lives near the convent and has teen-age daughters, too.
She does not have access to milescity.com, but, does get the paper and she did not see this in Mon or Tue night papers either.
Does anyone have any other info on this? Thank you and another reminder to everyone to be caucious at all times.

I know about the phrase and the origin, My issue is does it belong in this particular thread. NO. This is a series issue and in my opinion phrases like that should not be added. There may be a place or time for it, just not here on this thread. So I reiterate WTF.

From the Miles City Star's Tuesday, October 23, 2012, Community roundup...

Sexual assault - The Miles City Police Department is actively investigating a report of a sexual assault. A female said she was attacked in the general area of the Cornerstone Apartments late Saturday or early Sunday morning. She was taken to Holy Rosary Healthcare where she was treated and released. The police are following up on potential suspects.

I watched an old "Dragnet" episode a while ago where they were talking about assaults and that was their recommendation too...the next thing is to go for the eyes. Good advice.

A long time ago I was attacked outside the Eagles Manor. A guy put his arm around me layed me down on the ground and held my mouth and almost strangled me. I "THANK GOD" I am alive.Somebody heard me scream. That young lady that was attacked was very lucky too.

A lot of times self defense classes teach you to scream out "FIRE" over and over instead of just screaming like a banshee. A lot of women have been attacked and/or murdered while screaming their heads off because people were afraid to come near the area where something bad might be happening, but someone yelling FIRE always draws a crowd.

I think if someone comes up behind you out of the shadows and puts their arm around your throat, it is going to be hard to do any screaming or pepper spraying or tazing anyway. It would probably be good advice to try to get a "buddy system" going so young girls will be walking in twos and threes. If someone is walking home from a friend's house, maybe the parent could walk them home at least to a point where they can see the young woman get into the house safely, or maybe another parent can meet them halfway.

Miles City is such a small town-you would think someone would know who the attacker is already. If not-is anyone willing or able to set up some sort of a surveillance operation over where it sounds like multiple attacks have been happening? Even a cheap-o security camera on the apartments would be nice.

I think it is poor advice to put the whole responsibility on the Police, as there are just a few of them on any one shift and they probably spend most of their time downtown or in more heavily travelled areas where there is bound to be more crime (or at the least barfights to break up and parking tickets to write). I imagine whoever is doing this keeps an eye out for Police cars or anyone in uniform before he makes his move anyway. If I lived there and my daughters were threatened I think I would be making sure they would never have to walk past that area alone even if it took a little extra gas to drop them off or pick them up.
