There's a lot of buzz in some circles about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now that's been 50 years a lot of archival material is being made available to historians and others. There's been some interesting things popping up in the news and other sources on the topic.

I remember bits & pieces about the Crisis - mostly remember the grownups speaking in low, worried, and concerned voices about what was happening.

I remember, as a child, being aware that something was going on. My father was all set to head for the hills because he was sure the bombs would start raining down. My mother, fortunately, was calmer.

I remember drills in school about getting under our desks, etc. as we were fairly close to Washington DC and were thought to be in the eye of the hurricane so to speak....the little boarding school in Virginia where I attended, tried to keep us safe and tried to not panic at the same time....I am quite sure the educators in those days had their hands full...

Yes, we did Howdy. In New York state when the alarm went off, we took our classes out in the hall and got on the floor, with our heads down and our backsides up while wearing skirts that were just above the knees and of course trying to keep flesh and under garments from full view. We had to stay in that position and try to keep from laughing until the siren went off..

We had just moved from Silver City New Mexico to Tucson AZ when this
started. I remember having just turned 7 and for those weeks
watching the U2 spy planes from Davis-Monthan AFB fly around Tucson
being refueled in the air and heading back to overfly Cuba. I was never scared, just thought it cool to watch. A little less than 4 years later we moved to Miles City. Talk about culture shock.

I just brought home the September/October 1963 book. I feel as if I am watching the last days of the nation's innocence count down. The last year I didn't know who was president.
