Kids on Bikes

What makes doing tricks on bikes on a street corner at night fun? Exspecially from 9:30pm-11:30pm? I'm guessing curfew on a Friday night is midnight.

I take it you almost hit them too? They (4 of them) came flying through a stop sign in pitch dark. I almost hit 2 of them.

They have no real world experience. They are having fun scaring you. They have no idea that they are counting on your reaction time and good well not to leave them bleeding hurting and maybe dying in the street. Unfortunately it takes experience to learn this, which means they are likely to keep it up until one or more of them feels the pain or the rest are suffering the loss.

Cyclists must obey all the rules of the road. If they blew through a stop sign call the police and have them ticketed. Bloody buggers.

DITTO on the DANGEROUS actions of KIDS ON BIKES!!!!

The police in Miles City appear to have more IMPORTANT issues to attend to than to also 'police' bike riders. I do wish that the police WOULD give MORE attention to the bike riders.

Last night shortly after the football game my wife, friends and I witnessed a number of bike riders plow through a group of patrons exiting the Hole in the Wall - then, a few of the bike riders ducked into the line of traffic heading east as the rest biked along just as fast on the sidewalk. The group paid NO ATTENTION to the traffic light at 7th & Main. NO police were in sight. And, since we were about 1/4 to 1/3 of a block behind, we couldn't 'collar' the over zealous kids and wait for a patrolman!!!

And the sad thing about this scenario, if it had turned out that a motor vehicle had HIT any of these bike riders - the driver of the vehicle would receive the ticket! This fact appears to EMPOWER these errant bike riders even MORE!!

This is hardly a new topic. Kids are stupid. It is in the nature of their undeveloped brains. What you are describing has been happening since kids were invented and nobody has come up with a solution yet.

I babysat a boy who lived at the end of a cul-de-sac. A bunch of boys were racing their bikes to the cross street and the winner got whacked by a car one time. His mother was explaining to him that THAT was the reason he and his buddies shouldn't race. He looked at her, completely seriously, and said "But I wasn't the one who got hit."

Sad change of the times. When I was a kid..and if I was disrespectful enought to try that, someone would have grabbed me by the scruff of the neck and dragged me home to face my parents...maybe someone should take a picture of the offenders and post it where their parents might see Or bring the picture to the police department and insist they do something...couldn't hurt

It's really fun if you know how to do tricks on a bike instead of sit in your chair all day and talk crap on the kids that ride there bikes.. and if you have a problem with us riding are bike in the street maybe you should think about building us a SKATEPARK and all of the kids that ride their bike in the street would be at the SKATEPARK did you ever think about that.. Yeah thats what i thought maybe you should.. instead of building casinos think About a SKATPARK for the kids..

This is stupid.....instead of complaining about it on the internet why don't u just build us a skate park and this wouldn't happen,.......its funny cause we have a golf course tons of casinos and bars yet we have nothing to do for us kids who just try to have fun. And remember u all where young once too

Maybe the kids that ride bikes in the streets should start a fundraiser for a skate park..instead of complaining that there is nothing to do in this town, find something to do be productive!! Plus i do believe that if you all weren't so rude by cutting off the people walking down the sidewalk and driving their vehicles than maybe we wouldn't complain about you all!! Zig-Zagging in front of traffic and cutting across the middle of the road is not safe for you or the people driving, did you ever think that they might not see you!! But hey what do we know we are adults and you are children who dont know life lessons yet..

Wow. " Just build us a Skate park " Kindof demanding dont you think. Children please. Why should we all give up our hard earned money so you can go have a place to play. You need to pull your heads out of each others a#*$# and realize that if one of you gets hit by a car that you will be seriously hurt or killed. Life is not a video game and you will not walk away free and clear.
There is way too much of this give me give me crap anymore. What ever happened to working for what you want and having a little self pride for your accomplishment.

we didnt demand you to build us a skatpark we asked!!!!!!!!!!!1 we said we should all get together and build a skatepark and this will keep kids off of the streets and give us something to do, and besides your older than us and cant do anything fun in your lives because you either are to scared to get hurt of you have a job you have to worry about but you have kids that will soon grow up to be are age or were once are age that will want to do what we are doing or have did what we are doing.. its not like we are bad kids were just a bunch of friends that like to have fun in are lives and doing things we love to do yes we understand you can hit us with your cars but if we had a skatpark where we could go to every day to ride we wouldn't be in your way and you wouldnt be in ours.
Top
Posted by I RIDE IN THE STREET (+19) 11 years ago
And if were so rude and you people dont like us cutting you off then you dont have to like us were doing are own thing and the little kids that see us ride and they see the stunts we do are making them wanna do the same thing. more and more little kids are starting to ride and if we cant get together and make a skatepark there is going to be just more and more kids riding there bikes and cutting people off so its a loss for both of us... you want kids to quit riding in front of you and we want a skatpark... so i would say let you guys choose... SkatPark? or Kids cutting in front of you? Skatpark cost money.. but a car hitting a bike can cost somebody their own life? but us kids will do whatever it takes to get a skatpark.. we have had fundraiser in m and h but what happens to all the money?? goes to another casino? or do people just give up on us....

You are talking about two seperate issues here.

The first issue is kids not abiding by the traffic laws, and possibly getting themselves killed. Last Saturday there was a kid, aged 11 to 13 by the looks of him, biking east down the middle of the west bound lane of the narrow section of Washington/Leighton by Triangle Park. I had to come to a complete stop for him to go by me. All the while a cop was right behind me, and did nothing.

The second issue is you feel you are intitled to a skate park. So, because you do not have a skate park, that gives you the right to blow through stop signs and ride down the wrong side of the street. I hate to burst your spoiled bubble, but you are entitled to nothing.

Please don't pull any of your "tricks" on your bike in front of my car, so I don't hit your dumb ass.

i think that we need to figure out who these kids are and turn them in so they can take some bike safety courses, i know that when i was that age my parents made me take them... plus they are braking the law by not having helmets, i believe. dont you have to be 16 or 18 to not wear helmets? i dont understand y cops just let them get away with it... lazyness i say!! plus next time i have a kid on a bike in the street when i am driving i am going to pull over and give them my two cents while i call the cops to report their little butts!!! these kids just think they can disrespect anyone and do what they please, well i think their parents need to open their eyes and be parents!! my son is five, when he sees you all riding in the streets he says he is worried that you all are going to get hit and wants to know why your not wearing helmets!! do tricks in front of cars is not cool get it through your spoiled little brains!!!

When I was your age my friend's Dad built us a motocross track, about fifteen miles northeast of poopty town. For that he still is a hero in my book.
You could work on your tone, adjust your attitude, act like you deserve a favor and maybe a modern hero might step up. Hey, it's worth a try.

Just how many kids are wanting this skate park? It seems its the same little group that has been riding on the street for the last year. And why are they hanging on the street corners at 10:00- 11:00 at night? on main street? And as far as "we don't own the streets and side walks"., Would you like to pay my $2000.00 taxes every year??!

I have to respond to the comment of "you need to build us a skatepark". My response to that is what makes you think we should build you a skatepark when you are the ones steeling our kid's bikes from our homes. I know darn well a bunch of you who ride all over town with your "spray painted bikes" and know darn well that is where all of the stolen bikes are going. Hmmm lets see all of a sudden there is a group of teenage kids riding around causing problems and at the same time all of a sudden our kid's expensive mongoose and razer bikes are being stolen. And for your information there was a skate park in the park at one time, and it was never used for years so it go taken down. Maybe people would be a little more open if you would quit steeling our stuff and don't give me that horse poop about "we aren't steeling anything" because I know who you are and I know darn well that is the whole purpose behind the whole spraypainting your bikes. Now go ahead and run with that.......why don't you save your money and pay the people back for our bikes that are stolen and maybe you could get a little help!

Question for I RIDE IN THE STREET: would a bmx bike track be acceptable instead of a skate park? It seems like it would give you and your friends a place to hangout and would be significantly less expensive to build. Please let us know what you think about this idea.

Me and my friends we all have wanted a bmx track for years.. all of us friends get together and go to the Honda trails by the river we started building jumps there but we all get tired of working with shovels and know that it would be easier with a bobcat or aany machine.. we use to go to the spotted eagle track before it got closed down but now we have nowhere to go besides the street and grind people ledges but all of us bmx kids would rather have a dirt track for bikes instead of a park but we go to school and we wanna ride and we don't have enough people to wanna help us build dirt jumps

i built a paintball course for you guys and it seems you got tired of that. so what happens when you get tired of the bike park that the city puts up money for that they could use for streets? who will maintain the park? you guys? maybe lose the attitude and start sending out a positive message and maybe more people would start helping. and by the way paintball is good for all ages

It is amazing, and sad at the same time, that so many adults here want to take a few broken eggs and make omelets out of them.

I, for one, think we can do much better. There is a awesome leadership training opportunity here to teach the next generation the ropes to improving the community. Need to do some research and ask a few questions to better organize an effort.

Yeah well the paintball course is also poorly built, and you have to pay to use it anyhow.

It also disturbs everyone around it, and lowered their property values. Not a wise investment on your part. Its also 13 miles out of town. Have you seen the price of gas? I'd rather ride my bike too!!

But if you're not going to use it how about cleaning up your mess? getting rid of the garbage? Let it be a trail for free. A lot less noisier than the paintball's that's for sure!!

If a private individual builds something like a paintball course or a skatepark or a swimming pool, they are going to have to charge for its use unless they are very rich and very generous. That is the nature of the beast. If you want a public facility, then the taxpayers are going to pay for it and that makes its construction more complicated.

No easy solutions out there but less acting like an idiot will help all around.

I am speaking from the position of 'mom of a teenage BMX bike rider.' From all the laws that I have researched for my bike riding kiddos, there are no bicycle helmet laws in our state. I'm not replying to this converstation advocating obnoxious attitudes from these teens but I do understand their points when they are getting accused of stealing bikes. I as a parent, who knows how much my sons paid for their bikes from their hard earned money, do not appreciate that accusation. I am very sorry for those who have gotten their bikes stolen, noone deserves that. If you know who stole the bikes that's one thing, but please don't put that blame on all the kids who have bikes in town. I do not agree with the kids riding in the street or on the sidewalks, but the question is legitimate, where would you suggest they ride? Kudos to the one who created the Paintball area, it is nice I'm sure for paint-ballers, however these kids aren't interested in paintballing, they want to ride their bikes. I'm hearing there was a bike park in town 'a few yrs ago.' The boys who are now wanting the BMX park may not have been old enough a few yrs ago to ride in a park like that alone.

I'm the parent of an almost 11 year old and I am very familiar with these solid color bikes. Some people may think that because these bikes are solid colors with the same colored rims that they are stolen and just being spray painted. Before making these kinds of accusations you really should look them up. These bikes are legitimate, expensive and top of the line.

As far as children of all ages riding their bikes in the streets or on the sidewalks. This has long been a topic and probably always will be. Citizens in MC complain about the kids riding BOTH in the street and on the sidewalks. It wasn't long ago when someone was complaining about kids riding on the sidewalks and that they should be riding on the street. Then there's those that complain about them riding on the street. I know that some of the younger ones have things to learn but they do try to behave. Since people aren't happy with either scenerio where would you suggest that these children ride their bikes? In my opinion, there is no good answer.

Sure, some of the kids may be rude and inconsiderate of pedestrians and vehicles, however, please don't lump all of the kids on bikes in MC into that group. So there's some problems with SOME of these kids but not all of them. They are just trying to have fun and keep busy. There are much worse and destructive things that these children could be doing. Riding bikes and doing tricks is the least of the activities that we should be worried about.

As a driver even I get irritated sometimes with kids riding in the road or darting across in front of me. However, it isn't just the kids that do that. Recently, there was an adult that did that to me and they chose to start yelling at me when I almost hit them. They were riding up to a 4 way stop intersection, in the wrong lane and had no intentions of stopping. When I turned right from the 4 way stop I came head on with this rider who was completely in the wrong. We live at a busy intersection and honestly, I see more adults ride through it everyday with no regard to the stop signs, even when there are people in cars waiting to go through the intersection.

I would suggest that everyone children and adults alike (on bikes and in cars) to just take a few extra seconds when they are riding to look around and be aware of what's going on around them. Watching for riders really is no different than being an alert driver and watching for other vehicles. Let's give most of these kids a break and not let a few disrespectful and problem kids on bikes cause us to lump all of the kids on bikes in town into one category. Again, there are much worse things the kids in MC could be doing. Maybe they can just do what they do and be a little safer about it.

Maybe if you asked nicely if anyone knows of any empty lot or space in town. You could then talk to the owner and offer for you and your parents to sign a waiver releasing them from any liability of injury. Make sure to get there permission before using the property. Then if you prove yourselves as responsible citizens. Citizens who do follow the rules and laws of our town. Adults may be alittle more receptive to helping with a skate park. For the simple reason that, when you do not follow the rules or laws of our town, why would anyone believe you would follow the rules of a skatepark that they just spent thousands of dollars on. All throwing a temper tantrum or bullying ever got me was my bedroom and that is what it sounds like you are doing when people read these threads. I actually know of a couple of places but do not know who owns them. Think about how you want to continue with your dream of a skatepark. Sugar or Vinegar
