Those who live in Miles City are probably well aware of it but non-locals are not so aware. The water tank on Carbon Hill was demolished last week and by now I assume there is a conspicuous empty spot on the side of Carbon Hill. The tank is due to be replaced by a 1.5 million gallon tank that will be ready to go by fall at the soonest.
The tank that was demolished had been problematic for years with leaks caused by a variety of problems. The old tank, which was constructed out of concrete, was built in 1953 and it had a capacity of 1.5 million gallons. According the a news story in the Miles City Star the city paid Jarrett Construction $130,080 to remove the old tank and footings.
The Carbon Hill water tank is a landmark of sorts for Miles City. Who remembers when it was common for the graduating high school class to paint their graduating year on the side of the tank... in very large numbers that pretty much went from the top of the tank to the ground. It could be hard to pull that off unnoticed and I suspect the persons responsible have some stories to tell.
Carbon Hill as a whole used to provide a lot of enjoyment for the kids of Miles City. I spent many a winter there sledding down the hill. We "hiked" and "climbed" on it during the summer. Near the water tank there were sandstone carvings that we referred to as "the slide" and the king and queen's chairs. I think liability concerns have pretty much put an end to that fun.
