For all of us who grew up swimming under the hot sun in Miles City...

Our swimming pool, also known as Scanlan Lake, the Oasis, is in serious trouble. It needs to be refurbished-- new piers, new diving board, new sand, new gravel and a complete makeover on the bath house.

To accomplish this task, several ideas have come up. Members of the pool renovation committee want it to be ready for the summer season.

In order to help raise funds for the Pool Project, Sigrid is asking members of the swim team since 1950, all former lifeguards, and ALL interested citizens and former Oasis Swimmers, to help out by donating $20 to the Fun2You Pool Fund, which is a tax deductible 501c3.

This project will be done in phases, with the first phase to be the replacement of the piers. The diagram below will give you some idea of what we have in mind.

The group would like to raise $10,000.

If you can help, please send your donation to:

Sigrid Laird
203 North Custer
Miles City, MT 59301

Please make checks payable to Fun2You Pool Fund. Thank you.

Pass this message on to any former Miles Citians, students of Sigrid and Bo Laird, and former swimmers! Let's make this happen for future generations!

If you have any questions, please email: [email protected]

Raise your hand if Sigrid taught you to swim:

Glad to hear that Fun2U is still going. $10,000 seems like a very reasonable goal and they also appear to be making plans that can be expanded one piece at a time which is also a great idea.

Sigrid and her family have been inspiring future leaders, one kid at a time, one swim team at a time, since I can remember. My daugher's first job was as a life guard there and later taught swimming lessons after being coached by Sigrid on the swim team. Hopefully, a parnership between the Oasis and FUN2U will bring it all together...

Hand raised.

I've always thought improvements to the existing pool blow away the idea of a concrete square. This is the pool MC needs.

Combining efforts and resources, what a great idea. The effort will improve the here and now as it works towards a better future facility. Bringing two hard working groups together should quadruple the work that gets done. Who ever thought of this idea gets a big A+ in my book.

Miles City should be very proud of its pool. I spent many, many hours there as a kid and it was an wonderful environment to grow up in. Sigrid and her family should be very proud of their community accomplishments. They are Miles ahead.

Just a thought:
Instead of trying to get $20.00 donations to help do this project
let's make a real effort and try to raise enough to be able to
enclose the one section and solar heat it?
Perfect time to do it would be now why raising the money and while the construction takes place.

While I agree with Levi said, I also have to support Barb in this. Ashley, your energy would be much appreciated, and better spent in a positive contribution of time and thought to any of the many, varied and wonderful projects folks in this town work on tirelessly.

The work is ongoing and just because the many service groups and individuals aren't posting their results on milescity.com or even in the newpaper regularly doesn't mean they are "sitting on their duffs". Whether you mean it as such or not, for you to say so, or even imply it, is likely to be taken as an insult to every person in this town that contribute freely of their time to make the community a better place to live. In this thread specifically, don't be surprised if folks circle the wagons around Sigrid -- she is an icon in the community and people are quick to defend her.

As an olive branch, I would urge you to just relax, accept the advice people have offered in this and other threads, and join the rest of the community in supporting the work being done. Celebrate and contribute to the effort, and most of all, treat each with respect.

The whole purpose of this project, Jimb, is to take small bites. Get a small project done. Then start another. We have learned over the decades that jumping into some multi-million project is fruitless. We can get where we are going taking baby steps a lot faster than leaping off a cliff.

When telling my daughter about the project the other day she said, "I know, I know! Tell Sigrid to sell a grain of sand for a dollar to each kid that has or will swim there!" Well -- that's not a bad idea -- if it was modified a bit -- might want to get more than a grain for a dollar:

Well, the Oasis is City property, so the Parks and Rec. Dept. Has already budgeted for many (if not all) of these changes to be made. What, specifically then, is this 10,000 for? And are any of the other 47,000 in previous pledgescomments to Fun2U being transferred to this new project? When did Fun2U join with Sigrid and the City to be involved in this? Was is maybe last Tuesday at the Miles City indoor pool committee meeting? Verification of these details would be very much appreciated!

I don't know for sure that it's that department. But I do know for a fact that it has, at least in part, been budgeted for by the City of Miles City. I'm assuming that would be the Dept. that is in charge of implementing the changes and actually getting it done, because that is the City Dept. in charge of The Oasis. It only makes sense. But I may certainly be wrong. I just can't think of any other Department that it would be. Can you>?

AD--you always sound as if you accusing someone of wrong-doing. This may not be your intent, but it is what is conveyed. Maybe if you could find a less accusatory way of asking questions, and not making assumptions about things you don't actually know anything about, you might find people more receptive to answering your questions. I know the answer to all the questions you asked but I was so put off by your approach that I took offense.

I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish, but you need to step back and re-evaluate why so many people are upset with you. If one person mis-interpreted your intent, it would one thing, but it seems as if everyone is interpreting your questions as attacks. Maybe it has something to do with the way YOU are behaving rather that how we are reacting.

Amorette,
I agree that the tone of some of my posts have been accusing in nature. I am aware of that, and those posts were accusing in nature because I meant for them to be. Many of my posts (not on this thread but in the 'Indoor Swimming Pool' thread I started), were intended that way in response to replies by others regarding the tone of the original post that started the thread, and to show my reason behind the tone of that original post.

Maybe because of the intensity and impact of the posts I made on that thread, people have automatically associated that tone with all of my posts since, regardless of the thread they are being posted on, or the topic. I can certainly understand how easily that can happen, as online boards do not have the same benefit of face to face conversation when trying to understand the tone of a person's thoughts. But I can assure you, that if I were trying to accuse someone of something- I would come right out and say it. I believe that my previous posts will fully reflect that.

My questions this afternoon regarding the City of Miles City and the others included in that post did not carry a harsh or accusotory tone. Amorette, after I read your post I reread it 3 times just to see if it somehow did, thinking I may have just missed it. As I said, I can see how it may have seemed that it did. But I cannot see it. I think the tone is one you are associating with me as a person on this forum versus the actual post itself. Very understandable, like I said. But I think online dialogue should really be viewed as objectively as possible because of the reasons I previously mentioned, as well as other information that correlates with that. I do understand that a person's comments on a community forum like this do combine in a way to create a sort of 'indentity' for each username, but instead of jumping to conclusions based on a username I think it would be more responsible to actually take each post of the author into account first, before stereotyping and assuming. Heck, maybe ask questions yourself just to clarify the intention of the post if you are unsure.

I don't appreciate you saying I am posting about things I know nothing about, especially when the post you are specifically criticizing is one in that I was trying to obtain information when I wrote it, not one that I was trying to act like a bossy, know-it-all in. In fact, if you were bored or curious enough you could compare some of my separate posts yourself and clearly see that even with only viewable text available to capture what you see as my 'tone', that there is clearly a difference between my bada** bit** ones, and my inquiry ones. But I know you are a busy lady and so since you don't have the time or desire to do that, I am more than happy to now clarify and inform you that the difference does exist, indeed.
Furthermore, I have said, more than once, that I was only looking for more information about this subject. Maybe I am wrong in thinking that this thread was started as a general information disclosure to the public about the project, and if this is not an appropriate place for me to try and obtain this information, I would again appreciate any information I can get on where a more appropriate and accessible place for me to find it would be.

Let me say that I am sorry if my 'question' post came off accusing and rude to you or anyone else, Amorette. I would hope that because you do know this information that after reading this, you might be willing to reconsider enlightening me and others on this forum with it. As I said in the original post with my questions, I, for one, would very much appreciate it!

Lastly, I would like to say that I really don't appreciate people deterring me from posting about the pool on Milescity.com. This forum was created with the very intention of discussing topics such as this, and whether or not some of you appreciate my comments or not really shouldn't matter. If my posts annoy you, don't read them. I am responding to another person's thread, so obviously I am not alone in the discussion. I didn't even freaking start this discussion. Those posts annoy ME and just come off like a person angry that a strangers dog sh** in their private yard. But this is a public yard, and anybody's allowed. That's the beauty of it. I love America.
(If anyone is confused, my last sentence was full of smugness and self-satisfaction, but in no way should affect the perception of the tone of the entire remaining content of this post.)

Goodnight, MC.COM. I kinda like you guys.

This is where you start assuming you know things you don't. Again, the tone is accusatory, as if the City or the pool supporters are somehow scamming you. They aren't. Nobody is. Not Fun2U and certainly not Sigrid Laird or the City. Assume the best and act from that basis and it may help.

Please detail for us your contributions to making Miles City a better place, both financially and volunteering your time.

You said each post should be judged on its merits. Allowing us to see past your initial abrasive personality to see the real Ashley, who only has the kids' best interests at heart and who walks the walk, not just talks the talk, would be of great assistance to this cause.

hat, she knows where to go to get the real information, yet she continues to choose to come on here to ask her questions. There are no official statements here. A good portion of what you read here is gossip, rumor, innuendo, misleading or downright false. Some of what is said turns out to be true, but it is still based on what someone heard from someone else. If someone was truly serious about wanting answers, they should actually take the time to pursue their questions through proper channels.

Being civil on that subject would not be possible at this website, thus it would behoove supporters to discuss it where it is welcome, like at a Fun2U board meeting. Meanwhile just hope that whatever pool they have available is safe and usable, anything is better than nothing. I remember how hot and miserable Miles City can be on an August afternoon, we took chances in ponds and canals and rivers and sloughs. Tired of reading about kids drowning. Everybody should have a chance to learn how to swim at least.

I remember how hot and miserable Miles City can be on an August afternoon, we took chances in ponds and canals and rivers and sloughs. Tired of reading about kids drowning.

Sigh. This kind of stupid hurts. Why would you take a chance in the river on drowning when you can swim under certified lifeguards? Why would you take a chance on contracting some truly unpleasant infections when you can swim in water that is treated? Do you really think some place like Spotted Eagle is safer than the city pool?

Cement ponds are nice. Indoor cement ponds are nicer. The Oasis is not a 'mud hole' by any stretch of the imagination and to call it so again turns any conversation about pool improvements into a name-calling argument.

This is an effort to improve things for swimmers without taking anything away from anybody. Why not just support it?

Cory, I second your thought about seeing the paddleboats, and perhaps canoe rentals as well.

For another wonderful "mud" swimming hole, check out Green Meadow Lake next time you are in Helena. On any given day the grass and beach is full of families BQ'ing, sunning, swimming, rafting, canoeing and further out - fishing.

Early each summer there is a wonderful, hilarious Cardboard Boat race, and each winter the Polar Bear (Bare?) club dives in -- each raise a lot of money for local charities. Wonderful bathroom facilities, but sorry, no life guards or concrete - or gee - no roof! It is swim at your own risk and no chemicals that I am aware of.

Here is a picture of the beach area and facilities with Mt. Helena in the background. Maybe a Cardboard Boat race would be a fun way to raise part of the money...

It is not owned or managed by the city of Helena, it is a state park.

Ashley, all you have to do is act a little more organized in thought and careful in (what gets perceived as) tone. This subject is and has been a battle for probably longer than anyone alive remembers. Two reasons, one, it isn't clearly understood what a real swimming pool(as part of a sports/fitness/recreation center) could do for the community, and second, lack of funding.
Quite obviously this cause needs serious, capable, knowledgeable help and there is an organization that has worked really hard to promote it. Having failed at getting the support to do it right, they now want to help improve the ol' swimmin' hole. Even I am all for it! It's better than nothing. It gets you by while you keep the dream alive. Proper attitude and tact, sharing beneficial information and acting professionally will help solve both problems.
Did you know there is a Fun2U Facebook page? There you will find lots of people who support the plan. You could always rev it up a little, its admins can moderate the negativity out of it, what they'd surely love to do here. Also it can reach people this site won't. People with money even, who remember how badly their little hometown needs help. They know why they had to move away, too. I hope you'll think about this, give mc.com a break, you aren't getting anywhere here. Now please excuse me while I go change out of my new Borat swimsuit, it's not as comfortable as it looked in the Swim Outlet.com catalog... try to have a nice day after that visual. LOL

I looked over the Fun2U facebook page. I was disappointed to see less than 200a people are following it. Although any fb user can see the content on the page, only people that follow, or 'like'the it are notified when new info or comments are put on the page. Milescity.com has a much more accessible audience for this, as anyone that looks it over will have it put right in front of them, nearly impossible to miss.

I think people forget that it is only a very small percentage of milescity.com users ever post at all. Almost all of them check it out, some more frequently and thoroughly than others. For the few regular posters to think that just because people aren't huddling around me and patting my back every time someone disagrees with me that I am alone in my opinion is just ignorant. I know im not.

Oh, and another suggestion for improvements would be a roof over the locker room/bathroom areas. Last couple time there a few kids (boys) climbed up on the roof and were peering into the ladies area.

Now, lets get back to the TOPIC AT HAND!

Amorette, I am pretty sure that Ashley knows it isn't about her own self.

I think she has been pretty clear from the start, that her issue is to get an indoor pool center started in MC. As an outsider, I can feel her frustration here on mc.com, that those who have long aspired for this goal, are attacking here now and on the previous thread.

Yes, there have been many, many, many debates about this....good people have worked long and hard towards Ashley's goal, and have yet to be successful....but the attacks from the establishment seems to be more spiteful than helpful.

A new voice in town is always refreshing. Why, I remember when a young cowpoke named Joe Whalen rode into town - oh, never mind.

The truth is, in a town such as Miles City, sites such as the one we are communicating on right now most likely have a bigger impact on the innerworkings of the community than most would think, or care to admit.

As I have said before, the line between all things professional and personal is a mighty thin one 'round these parts. This town is small. Everyone knows everything, (or like to think they do), and even since I began posting on here and been on more frequently I have been surprised at how many issues brought up somehow find their way into our local paper, just following some serious action here on Milescity.com, to boot. (How's that for irony, Buck?)

Screw letters to the editor, im just fine right where I am.

Oh- and Amorette, im just finishing creating my blog site, that IS about me. ALL ME! That should help keep me from burdening you all with my unintentionally narccisstic tendencies that sometimes find their way into the comments I post on here.

Hannah Nash, thank you for starting this thread. I myself am sorry for the ugly turn it has taken. Maybe we can Re-post the original again and lets see if we can keep the discussion on the Oasis. It started out good...AND THEN!
If there ever was a wealthy donator this would surely sour or change his opinion on WHICH community needs a helping hand. No one wants to go out of there way to donate to a good cause for a community that is in a constant bicker... Over helping make our town better for the youth and recreation. Come on....

Jason I completely agree with the points you are making. I strongly encourage you to go into the 'Sports and Recreation ' section-thing on here and read a thread I started about 3 weeks ago titled 'Indoor pool. Yep, I said it.' Some stupid stuff but also some information you would greatly appreciate, I think.
Night.

Our mission is to enhance the quality of life for Eastern Montanans by by building a swimming pool and recreation center where persons of all ages can enjoy physical, recreational and educational activities.

That's the Fun2U mission statement. Now they realize they can't build anything and want to improve what they've got. So I'm guessing they still hope to enhance the quality of life for Eastern Montanans so persons of all ages can enjoy physical, recreational and educational activities.

What could be wrong with that?

Okay, I don't know how the Oasis could ever be what I would call a swimming pool, but it is what it is and it's gonna have to be good enough for now. I had fun getting wet and splashing and diving there, it was better than the canals and ponds.

If it's gonna be a venue for teaching kids to swim then you have to look at it as being a priceless deterrent to future tragedies. However, lets not confuse even say, twenty swimming lessons with being trained to swim long and hard, and fast. That's what just might be needed to survive a dare to race across that lake, and you know it will happen. The kid who says "well I took swimming lessons when I was ten" gets his name in the paper, the one who says "I took eighteenth in the 200 free at the Hardin Invitational last year" just gets to help carry the casket.

I doubt that helps many of you understand the need for a pool, have another argument about it, but please do support anything Fun2U is doing.

Ashley's blog is going to be amazing, but I think Jeff's will be the one with lasting artistic merit.

Anxious to hear of other people's thoughts on the recent swimming threads here on MilesCity.com for those who have been following that haven't yet made their voices heard. C'mon, people, speak up! Now is the time.

Just a question. I read the mention of a "Duck mite problem" on this thread. Is that factual? Our grandson went into that water and ended up totally covered with little red bites all over his body. He loves water but, I hesitate to let him go in there again.

Jeri, if you want to be technical they weren't really bites, more like attempting to use him as a host.

I imagine Ashley found a mirror and eventually succumbed to starvation.

That was the most detailed explanation of swimmer's itch I've ever read. I especially enjoyed all the various names for it in other countries, from now on I will be calling it "Beaver Lice".

Actually Jeri, that article gives ways to avoid it like using Deet, etc that totally eliminates that stuff...any doc can also give helpful hints I would think...It isn't horrid, it is just a reaction like an allergy and obviously can be dealt with in several ways according to that article...but whatever way you deal with it for your family is totally your business...I, personally, would still go into it as Buck said a chlorine and urine pool isn't much better at all...

The city used to make sure there were no cat tails and/or ducks in the swimming area. Then we had an administration that didn't like the pool, filled in part of the settling ponds, and skipped the spring clean of cat tails People started feeding the ducks and voila! Swimmer's itch.

Clean out the cat tails. Do not let ducks nest in the swimming area. Dry off thoroughly when you get out of the water.

Yes, chlorinated concrete pools do not have this problem but have some of their own.

Ducks, geese, doesn't matter - I've managed to catch it in a nice trout stream, but you'll never see me avoid one because of it. I'd advise swimmers to stick to deeper water, it's at its worst in three feet or less. No concrete pool in this neck of the woods, either.

I recall a couple issues with the Oasis pool, from the seventies. One was the walls would get all slimy with algea, if you could see the wall swimming up to it and do a flip turn your feet slipped and you couldn't get a good pushoff. Another was you couldn't see the bottom, no lines to follow. I wonder if these have been/could be addressed to make it more usable.

Mr. Bonine, I work frikin hard for the awesome health insurance I enjoy. Im not a left wing wacko who believes that government should care for my illness. I like segrid, my girls were also taught to swim and passed the swimming tests every year to go on to the deep end. I'm just wondering WTF everyone gets so dammed "vicious" and want to attack everyone with an opinion. Grow up people and lets not get personal in a ridiculous forum situation like milescity.com.

Also, Ashley Dawn has been raked over the coals for her opinion. If you disagree with her, be a reasonable adult and just say why. There is no room for the attitudes I am seeing here. Why the hell dont you grow up people? Aren't we all adults and living in the same community? I just noticed that Amorette was jumping on every chance to bash someone or prove that they are the idiots she thinks they are. If I meet any of you on the street, I would like one of you smart asses to respond to me in the above manner because I could talk you down In two seconds and you would feel like a poop!!!! just so you know. also Bonine, your snow bunny joke is sad and immature but you have included it in more than one of your posts. Poor kid, not much of an imagination. VERY SAD.
But I am dealing with true Miles City folks.
