If you haven't read "The Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson, do so immediately. It actually explains some of the weirdness that is English. For example, when printing presses were invented, they followed the convention of southern English spelling but we speak in a northern English dialect. (Or vice versa. It's been awhile.) And Scots Gaelic has a word for the twitching you get in your upper lip just before you take a sip of Scotch.

That same routine (most of it) was done in the early '80s, and about 1,000% funnier, by the comedian Gallagher: (skip to 0:44 if you want to get right to it).

English is perfectly consistent and logical . . . except when it's not. That's just why I like it.
