Hollowing Light

Ali Kaaf's paintings, photographs, glass art and films are integral parts of one body of work. They are linked to each other by conceptual processes. Many of Kaaf's pieces are texturally dense, using texture as non-verbal communication. His extraordinary works fuse with and strengthen each other.

Events hosted by the Custer County Art & Heritage Center in Miles City, Montana will mark the debut of presentations by Kaaf in which, for the first time, his video works are combined with glass art. Hollowing Light gives physical expression to the tension between endurance and decay, between persistence and erosion.

In his art, Kaaf ties together his personal experiences in Syria, Beirut, Berlin, and the United States. His work draws inspiration from antiquity, while simultaneously permitting a very contemporary political reading.

Ali Kaaf uses elemental means, like heat and light, to carve a space in darkness.

Hollowing Light will be preceded by a multimedia presentation on Syrian Culture, presented by Rani Alhafez. Both presentations are free, and are open to the public. Donations to the Custer County Art & Heritage Center are welcome.
