THE Miles City Speaker's Bureau HOSTS HUMANITIES MONTANA SPEAKERS BUREAU PROGRAM "HAPPILY EVER AFTERING ON A MONTANA CATTLE RANCH" WITH WRITER JOHN CLAYTON

The Miles City Speaker's Bureau will host Humanities Montana Speakers Bureau program "Happily Ever Aftering on a Montana Cattle Ranch" with John Clayton on November 9th. The program will be at Miles Community College in the Yellowstone Room at 12:00 noon and at the Miles City Public Library at 6:30 pm. The presentation is free and open to the public. Partial funding for the Speakers Bureau program is provided by a legislative grant from Montana's Cultural Trust and from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

When Caroline Lockhart moved to her homestead in Dryhead, Montana in 1926, she was trying to enact in real life the sort of "happily ever after" experience she described so well in her bestselling Western fiction. In this presentation by author, journalist and essayist John Clayton, we learn about-and debate-how well she succeeded.

Though little-known today, Lockhart (1871-1962) wrote six novels in the 1910s, three of which were made into movies and all of which culminated in the hero retiring to a cattle ranch. So when she decided to retire, she moved to Montana's Pryor Mountains to start up her very own cattle ranch. No longer would she merely write about the heroic men and women who worked with horses and cattle on open range, she would live that life herself. Can a single, liberated woman with a tendency to romanticize succeed at running a 1920s ranch?

Red Lodge, Mont., journalist Clayton, author of The Cowboy Girl: The Life of Caroline Lockhart, brings to life an astonishing woman and also the hardships and victories of the old-time ranching life, complete with photographs.
