Can someone give me a quick breakdown of what's going on with baseball in MC? Are the Outlaws and Mavericks both Legion teams?

The Mavericks are Legion and are Conference Champions. They are playing at Districts this weekend in Laural. The outlaws have nothing to do with legion. They are their own kind of baseball.

Mavericks lost to Livingston 8-4 in the first round of districts. Played Lewistown at 10 am this morning. Did anyone hear a score?

Outlaws are a traveling independent team much as you see groups traveling in basketball etc. You can go to Miles City Outlaws.com website. Mavericks are a sanctioned American Legion ball club, I believe. http://www.outlawsbaseballclub.com/

Mavericks played Glendive Friday morning. Lost 8-6, and no they do not have the same kids on the two teams.

Gazette must've made a mistake. Why do I not see the Billings Blue Jays in the same district tournament?

In my general opinion, it is sad to see the talent pool split in Miles City baseball.

Miles City baseball passed a resolution that the players could not play on both teams even down to the younger boys this year. The Outlaws have three age groups. I think initially the split started over the use of metal bats and the lack of competition this split caused the Mavericks. Teams would not come here to play with wooden bats. Thus an independent team arose. Sad thing all around... It definitely has split the talent pool.

The split included metal bats but also involved a lot of other issues, not the least of which was some egos. I am not going to go into that unpleasantness on a public forum but I hope some sense will be made of the mess eventually.

Absolutely had nothing to do with metal or wood bats. Enough said.

Actually it started with the metal and wood debate during the 11-12 year old all star state tournament that was held in Miles City. The coach were told to not use metal at all. Well after 1 game they broke out the metal bats not caring what the league had to say and that is what started it all. Which later led to the meeting that split Miles City youth baseball and the outlaws.

No reason why miles city should not be in the top tier in "A" every year in state if they hadnt split.

But the bat controversy was not central to the discussion. Egos were.
