Distracted drivers....
Posted by Jason Miller (+221) 11 years ago
It seems as though every single day I see more and more people driving and "texting". It's my personal opinion that having anything else to focus on while behind the wheel is a little more than most of us can handle. Driving safely is work enough. What is so important that it can't wait until you're held up at a light, stopped by the train or simple at your destination? Have I ever texted while driving? Yes, although it is my intention to never do that again. The thought of injuring, or worse yet killing someone, is too much for me to imagine. What do think the first thing "they" will search out after a crash will be in order to place blame? Phone records? Please, put the phone down until you get there..... Reasonable??

A few years ago my delivery helper and I followed, and then passed a little gal doing paperwork, texting and painting her toenails while driving.

Frank: I would be interested to read the study if you would please post a link. Here is one I found after a simple search.

The best distracted driver I have seen was a woman on the freeway in So. Cal. rush-hour traffic, curling her eyelashes.

I agree 100%. There is a lane next to the curb that you can stop and take your call or text, then arrive two or three minutes later than you would have, Alive!

A policeman once told me that when you see folks driving while doing these things call the police. I'm sure that they'll do something goofy that will give cause for the cops to pull them over.

"If drivers were disregarding the bans, then the crash patterns should have remained steady. So clearly drivers did respond to the bans somehow, and what they might have been doing was moving their phones down and out of sight when they texted, in recognition that what they were doing was illegal. This could exacerbate the risk of texting by taking drivers' eyes further from the road and for a longer time."

I applaud anyone who does a study, trying to find when things do and don't work. Even before I got to the point made above, I was thinking the same thing. Here's the deal. Nobody is going to convince another (most times), they have to convince themselves. It's a bummer for "you" and I but the only way to learn for yourself is to be involved. Here's to hoping that you never learn a thing.

If you have background in an area allowing you first hand knowledge of how car wreck victims look (regardless of reason) after the fact and still argue that texting (or any other distraction plays no part and is not important) makes no difference then what can I say. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and unless you are one of the many "instigators" on this site with no point to make other that acting a pain, then I will say, thanks for posting. We will have to agree to disagree. Your opinion is your own.
