New Chinese Restaurant
Posted by Lisa McRae (+36) 12 years ago
I heard there is a new Chinese restaurant in town, located where Mexico Lindo was formerly housed in the Olive. Just curious if anyone has gone, and if so, was it good? I heard the owners are the same ones that have the Chinese restaurant in Forsyth, which I have eaten there and found it to be good.

A new Chinese Restaurant would be a good idea because the one we have, well, if I can't say anything nice I won't say anything at all.

Same owners as Forsyth!! I think their Chinese food is awesome and much more reasonably priced! If it doesn't drive the other one out of business I would be suprised..,they are severly over priced and not that good!! I say welcome to miles city and I would wish them luck but they won't need it I am sure

I went by there this evening and there were several cars, so they must be open. I'm surprised they didn't have an ad in the paper. Maybe they haven't gotten that far, yet.

I stopped by for lunch today and had the buffet. The selection is on the small side, but the food was quite good. It is well worth stopping in. And, it is always good to see empty space fill up again on (or off of) Main Street.

I wasn't a fan when I ate at their Forsyth location. It was hot, the food wasn't that good (except the cod, it was amazing) and the service was pretty lame. Plus no refills.

Wasn't the Olive Dining Room a Chinese restaurant before in a previous incarnation?

I don't like Oriental food so I never eat there, but I hear a lot of good things about the Forsyth location. I just wish they would do something to the outside of their building. They took over the next-door building and expanded, but didn't take down the old signs and awning. (Unfortunately this town has no standards for that kind of thing, I guess.)

Kacey, the Olive was Mexico Lindo before they moved to Haynes.

Ate there tonight. Food was alright but the prices were kinda high. Next time we'll have to try off the menu because the buffet was pretty lame. But the service was iffy; had to ask for our own soda's.

My last experience with the New Hunan was when I had the buffet. It was ice cold and had been sitting there a long time so it tasted terrible. When I asked the waitress(also the owner) when new food would be out, she said not until everything that was there was gone. I then told her that it tasted bad because it was so cold, and she just shrugged! So I said it could not be sanitary to leave food out for so long, and if there was a regulation about this, and she said if you dont like it dont eat. I have never gone back.
Also, I hate it when buffets are small and have few choices, but would like to eat at the new place, so I hope they expand their buffet or I will be very disappointed.

Yes, there was a Chinese restaurant in the Olive for many years before Mr. Rath was even born.

Ate there tonight, it was just ok. Similar price for the buffet as New Hunan. Food was hot and refilled often, which was good. Fewer options than New Hunan's buffet, but overall better quality. Not crazy about paying $1.50 for a can of soda. And it was HOT in there.

Overall, it was decent, but at $11.50 for the buffet, there are other places in town I would rather go to for that price. I'm not going to complain too much about having another option in this town though

I went to New Hunan one time and one time is all it took for me to never go back again. Our server was rude and the food tasted so bad that we could not even finish it. (not to mention the food was way overpriced in my opinion)
The Chinese restuarant in Glendive has very good food and very polite owners, but every time I've been in there during summer months it's smothering hot. So we always get the food to go because of that.

I was at the one in Glendive before (assuming there is only one there, in a small strip mall off the Sidney exit). It was AWESOME! They had a pick 2,3,4 etc on the menu. The food was hot, fresh, and very good. Service was also great. I would almost drive there just to eat there again!

Well we have family there so each time we go visit we usually order out there

The one in Glendive is really good, reasonably priced and VERY friendly owners--they're right next to the Wagon Wheel in the same building. They do have air conditioning, but I think it's a swamp cooler and if it gets really hot out, it doesn't work real well--but for good food and good atmosphere, it doesn't matter that much! Whether you eat in or take it out, it's the same every time--I've never had anything bad there when we visit family (and that's the place where we usually go). (CC's isn't bad either, neither is the Yellowstone, the restaurant in the motel across from CC's. Other than those 3 places and Mexico Lindo and Frosty's (high priced, but well worth it), there's really nowhere better to eat in Glendive in my opinion.)

Tried it....gotta say, not a fan of the new one. Prices weren't any better then Hunan.
I miss the owners that had the Hunan before these owners...I believe his name was Kevin and his wife Sue Mae. Food seemed to be better then and they really cared about good service.
I always enjoy seeing any new business come into Miles City and wish them the best, so hate to be negative about it....just my opinion!
I have heard several love it and travel to Forsyth just to eat there...!

Josh,
You are just a youngun....life did exist in Miles City before you.
I also remember LONG ago that there was a little Chinese restaurant across the side street from the Olive on the corner. My dad used to go there and pick up takeout.

I wish I would have had a camera one day when I was visiting Wolf Point. The city animal control pickup was parked in front of the Chinese restaurant. The only funnier parking spot would have been the delivery entrance.

I always order off the menu rather than the buffet. That guarantees more attention to paid to the cooking. Mu Shu Pork is a good test of the quality of a Chinese restaurant.

Amorette knows the Jedi way....

That is Chinese Restaurant 101.

Personally, I have never been a big fan of the Chinese buffet. We have one in Helena, that I'm sure would blow the mind of the average Miles Citian, called the L & D Buffet.....but 9 times out of 10, when I have a hankering for Chinese food, I order take out from the Jade Garden.

Quality is much better than quantity.

How does one ever get a "hankering" for Chinese food? To each his own. The only times I have eaten Chinese were when I was with a large group of people and I had no control over where we ate. IMO, there are too many good steaks and sweet potatoes to be eaten to waste any time on Chinese. But if you like Chinese, enjoy.

The Jade Garden is between a friend's home and office in Helena and she often stops for take-out. I could live like that easily. I didn't have the Mu Shu Pork the day we stopped there--can't remember why and what I had instead--but it was mighty tasty.

Eating anything besides a slab of cow and a pile of starch does require fortitude but, ah, the rewards can SO be worth it. You can also end up eating something absolutely vile but that applies to any type of eating. I have et a pretty awful slab of cow in my time.

Richard, I think the 'hankering' or appreciation for different foods is something you develop overtime. Some do and some donot like a wide variety. My taste definitely differ from others, but I love good-tasty food.

One of my favorites that compares favorably to food I've eaten overseas is in Billings.

MRH: you are right. It is probably something learned. At one point in my life I didn't like green chiles, after living in NM for a while I got where I love a good green chile burrito. I am honestly scared to try new foods because I have had allergy issues in the past. Someone got me to try sushi in NM and I was sick for about a week afterward. So I tend to be really careful. I don't do well with MSG or curry.

My measuring stick for a Chinese Restaurant is hot and sour soup. If they can get that right, nothing else on the menu will be a challenge. Sadly I have had far more bad bowls of it than good ones.

Oh and I will second MRH on Cham Thai. Been there a couple times and enjoyed it very much.

And I have to add that there are literally tens of thousands of Chinese dishes. Saying you don't like any of them is just ignorant.

To say nothing of a multitude of chinese cooking styles: szechwan, cantonese, etc... and if Chinese isn't your thing, have you tried Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, etc, etc, etc?

But Levi is absolutely right on the hot & sour soup thing...

Viet is the best, IMHO.

You haven't lived until you've had a good bowl of pho.

Richard, I think you'd probably like pho (if you could get past the environment in which it is typically served)

I once attempted to eat in Chinatown in San Francisco. Authentic Chinese food. They brought soup out as an appetizer. The fish eyes staring at me was just too much. Lost my appetite after that.

Yeah, authentic asian anything can be a bit of a challenge. I still don't regret not ordering the "Pig's Spare Parts Soup" when I was in Singapore. Or anything with the word "Viscera" in the title.

But I'd probably try the fish-head curry all the same. You don't have to eat the eyes, that's just something they do to impress the tourists.

Not in Richard's household as he said, but he doesn't speak for all Bonines. I happen to love Chinese food, get a a hankering for sushi and have enjoyed a bowl or two of pho.

Just sayin!

There are new managers at the New Hunan. They are VERY NICE. Very similar to the original couple that started the New Hunan. EVERYONE should give them a try if you haven't in the last 2-3 months. They genuinely care if their customers enjoy their food & aim to please. They have some items that remain the same on the buffet. but others that change to give customers a variety. They even added the hot & sour soup I had asked for many times from the previous owners, but was told to order it off the menu. I have been to the Hong Kong as well. It has a smaller selection on the buffet & varies greatly from visit to visit, but the people have been very gracious & even got egg drop soup for my daughter when it wasn't on the buffet.

After New Hunan changed recently, they have become my favorite place. Mainly because I noticed they changed their egg rolls. I asked what happened to the previous, and she said they just took them off the buffet and added this other version. She was very friendly, and let me know that anything they had changed, they can make the old version still. Just ask!

It's the best service I have ever gotten at New Hunan.

TK, my mom really likes the Chinese resturaunt in Glendive. Whenever I go back there to see her we go there a lot. It is really good food I just wish it was in a different location- not a real fan of the location it is in right now. A couple of other places to eat at in Glencive that have good food are the Gusthauf and the Beer Jug. The nachos at the Beer Jug are the best!!! Is the Hole in the wall atill open? I think My Aunt and Uncle used go there a lot. When I was younger we used to eat there sometimes when we came to Miles City.

Just tried the Hong Kong restaurant at the Olive for the first time. Was very impressed! Had the Chicken Lo Mein and an order of Crab Puffs (crab wontons). Both were great; the chicken was tender, vegetables were fresh and crisp, good seasoning, wasn't drowning in a sea of sauce, and the puffs were hot and crispy! VERY GOOD!!! And it was ready in less than 10 min.!

Had heard mixed reviews, some about the food and several about the prices being high, but I thought it was very reasonable for the amount of food I got. I got enough Lo Mein for at least two, if not three good-sized meals!

I have never had a problem with New Hunan and do visit them ocassionally, but think Hong Kong is just as good, and maybe better. Have to say, I will definitely try them again! And its nice to have another option besides pizza or a steak house downtown.

KUDOS!
