Stewart is a level headed funny guy who is extremely intelligent.
I enjoyed the hell out of that interview. And I'm generally conservative.
Some people that I talk to are a little "too happy" about this video. As I suspect that many of the leftist crusaders on this forum will be.

Jon Stewart is one smart cookie.
On a side note...there is a liberal bias in the media, and the reason is because most journalists go to college and are educated. Educated people who study the issues tend to be liberal. Fact. Not all, but most. The majority.

A small majority. Percentage of Repubs vs. Demos having a college degree runs about 46% of repubs vs. 53% of Democrats. Not really enough of a gap to make any broad generalizations. Now if you look at the journalism majors, there's probably a larger skew. Thinking that people who "study the issues tend to be liberal" is just patting yourself on the back for being on the good team and thinking in stereotypes, which you super intellectual smart liberals aren't supposed to do.

Sorry to state the obvious, but it's true... the educated tend to be more liberal, but it's always been that way. In nearly all facets of culture and history...the universities and colleges of the world tend to be where the intellectuals and thinkers tend to gather. These folks who make it a career to study and discuss ideological and economic models tend to lean left. Why do you think that whenever a tyrant takes over a government, the first thing they do is purge the intellectuals in said country found where???? The universities. It is as old as civilization itself and it continues to happen to this day. Why? Because the uneducated far out number the educated in this world (again historically and current)and whenever the rubes decide they have had enough of the brains they back a total nut job willing to snuff out the smart asses who know better than they. I'd imagine it will always stay this way.
So back to the original point...most journalists go to college. Most colleges are staffed by thinkers and intellectuals who lean left. Again, this generalization defines the majority as you Levi pointed out. Not absolutes. Numbers can be skewed as well. I'm sure BYU and Oral Roberts University are producing some fine right winged journalists.
Just my two cents.

I'll bet that the vast majority of doctors are conservative. "Educated" isn't a very precise descriptor. Someone with a 4 year degree in Philosophy may be "educated" but it is a different kind of education than a medical degree. A MA in Art History makes a person "educated," but really, who gives a crap about Art History?
A lot of the "educated" really enjoy sitting around talking about how "educated" they are, and it ends up looking and sounding like my 19 year old college buddies from back in the day who would sit around baked out of their minds talking about the mysteries of life.
I'd argue that many liberal educations are nothing more than a badge of "honor" - and that those who use their educations to become successful are more often conservative leaning people.
Liberals love to rant about the "educated" left, and the "wealthy" right. Doesn't make much sense, does it? Lets not mistake "education" for "intelligence" here.

Yes... I certainly am in awe of the sheer intellectual heft of the "Right". I'm surprised there aren't more Nobel prize winners amongst the ranks of the Teahadien.

Nice link Howdy. Bridgier is a lost cause but people really need to get past the "it's the Republicans" or "it's the Democrats" and realize that they're on the same side.

TWICE as many NON HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES (read: high school drop outs) vote Democrat than vote Republican. Interesting, eh? I'm sure there is a good excuse for that (other than mooching on tax payer money, right?).
Saying that Democrats are "more educated" is simply not correct. How many more high school dropouts in the USA do you suppose there are as compared to those with Masters and Doctoral degrees? Aside from the staggering percentage of high school drop outs that vote Democrat, the only large difference is voters with graduate degrees. Those with BA degrees are almost 50/50.

who said anything about political parties? I am talking ideology. Political parties in this country both serve the same beast IMO. Being a "liberal" means a lot of different things. Democrats are called liberal, but compared to most European nations, the Democrats are as liberal as Jethro Tull is heavy metal.

You're right. All of those Republican voting Liberals are skewing the data.

I'll buy this theory to some extent if you limit it to liberal arts degrees. I think when you go to the business, engineering, sciences, etc. schools it falls apart. I wouldn't doubt that a large majority of journalism graduates consider themselves liberal, I just think you're overgeneralizing by expanding it to include all educated people.

I think Kelly's link in the other thread sums it up best. I have to pick one of two parties. One party hates the middle class and poor people less than the other. That is the one I'll vote for, and whose candidates I'll support.
It would be nice if third party politics or some sort of parliamentary system was viable in the US - but it's not.
The ideology of sarah palin and joe the plumber is one of aggressive ignorance and a feting of gilded age rapaciousness. If that's what you're "for", then I don't know what to tell you.

Most people are liberal until it comes time to make a decision that adversely affects their own financial picture, whereupon they instantly gravitate to the right. Liberals think liberalism is fine for everyone else. CNN starts their news anchors and correspondents out in the high $20's and low $30's. They shoulder little of the tax burden, hence their liberal leaning. It's easy to be ideological when you have no adverse financial stake in the outcome.

Yes, kind of like the right wingers and teabaggers where I live who equate the Federal government with socialism. You know the type. Now they're clamoring for their FEMA money.
Oh wait, that's exactly the opposite of what Gern posted! Never mind.

Um, yeah.
I think CNN's anchors and correspondents make JUST A TAD more than $30 grrr per year.
Starting salaries for a noob in the TV business in Billings...maybe.

Bridgier, while I agree that the D's are the lesser evil at this point and vote accordingly, I don't think we should just give up on forever being saddled with a 2 party system and work to change it from within if possible...otherwise, the top 2 percenters will achieve their goals IMO...

Democrats aren't even the lesser of two evils. May as well be the greater of two evils - at least you know the conservatives are a bunch of procreateing assholes, the current Democratic party is the same assholes lying to our faces about not being assholes. Procreate 'em all. I'm voting for the ghost of Bob Kelleher for everything. Yes or no on the mill levy? Bob Kelleher.

Buck is 100% right at least when it comes to civil liberties. When a republican (GWB) starts hacking apart the bill of rights, the liberals all raise hell about it. When a Democrat does it (Obama and Clinton before him) the liberals sit on their hands because it's their guy (with the exception of my buddy Glen Greenwald). The Democrats can get away with a lot more than the Republicans in this arena and Obama has not only continued but in most cases expanded on the Bush era abuses of power.

I hope you're not lumping me into your generalizations there Levi.
And Glenn Greenwald is WAY more doctrinaire vis a vis Guantanamo and Osama then I've ever been, so I find it somewhat strange to hear that he's your buddy. I'm pretty sure I can find an article or two of his where the word "gulag" makes an appearance.

I agree with poisonspaghetti.
Wendy, you should check and see if Wilt Chamberlain has any frozen sperm still out there. You might then end up with a son who becomes a starting forward for the University of Utah.

I'm mostly talking about members of congress and the media. No offense, but nobody really gives a crap what you or I say, particularly if you're going to continue to vote Democrat even if you don't like what they are doing.
And I do not by any means agree with everything (or even the majority of things) that Greenwald says, but I like the fact that he's willing to hold Democrats to the same standards that he applies to Republicans, plus he is a very good writer which I appreciate.
