Florida justice: rich man will do no time for killing two tourists in exchange for cash restitution to their families

Cory Doctorow at 5:50 AM Saturday, Jun 4, 2011

A "millionaire playboy" who killed two British tourists in Florida when his $150,000 Porsche jumped the curb will not go to jail, despite the fact that he fled the scene and lied to police officers about who was behind the wheel during the accident. Instead, he will pay cash restitution to the victims' family, settling a civil suit on the condition that he not go to prison. Ryan LeVin, who did not offer an apology to the victims during sentencing, is on parole in Illinois, where he has a record of over 50 traffic violations, including striking a police officer with his car and left the scene. His lawyer has asked to have his Porsche returned.

Karma can be a bitch though. He might not really be getting off so lightly.

The families sold out their loved ones when they agreed to it.

There must not have been enough evidence, or the district attorney would have been taking him to trial, not the family in civil court.

They have the evidence, just not the courage to go against the real crooks. If cops cared about crime ane justice they would have arrested Henry kissinger for the Irish, that have legal warrants out for him. The truth is that cops are lazy kids that used to be bullies. They do not care about much other than a paycheck and self preservation, the dedicated one care about power. This drunk bastard actually clipped a cop and still no state charges. I stole a bass triphy and some clothes, the state picked up charges when the home owner wanted to settle on me cutting her grass and apologizing, they sent me to prison. If a were rich would not have went to jail. Why did the state not pick up charges on some local cases in the past, I think money is the reason, and I am not alone.

So in the end, this is really all about you. If life were fair, horses would ride half the time. Get over it.

Cash, your understanding of how the justice system functions is incorrect to say the least.

Which is odd, because cash has more experience with the justice system than many of us.

Seems to be nothing more or less than the Market Place in action. Do we really want the government taking a hand in something like this? In days of old, compensation for wrongs done was considered the norm (wergild for example). Perhaps the practice of paying blood money for crimes against persons is one of those fine old traditions that should be retained. Could be yet another way to get the government off the backs of the little guy.

I agree with Hal. And as far as Danny's comment above:

The truth is that cops are lazy kids that used to be bullies.

The same accusation could be said about your friend Aaron, who has threatened multiple people here on this site......well, I guess that makes him a bully who remains a bully.

Nevermind.

My eyes aren't what they used to be. I was going to call FWP until I realized the title was 'peasants' and not 'pheasants'.
