MCS,

Here is a url to a child name change petition
http://courts.mt.gov/cont...change.pdf

It looks pretty much the same as the adult name change I just went through myself. If you can't afford filing fees make sure you fill out an Affidavit of Inability to Pay. I, however, was able to pay and here was what it cost me:

$125 to file:

Original Petition for Name Change
Order Setting Hearing
Notice of Hearing on Name Change

Once that's filed, you'll receive a hearing date. (I received mine at the time I filed.)

You then have to publish the Notice of Hearing in the MC Star. The hearing timeframe gives you plenty of time to do so. This cost me $95 for 4 weeks. The Star gave me a reciept and an affidavit of publication which I had to bring with me to the hearing.

The hearing was over in less than 15 minutes. If no one is there to object to the name change... the judge will probably ask the child's guardian(s) a few questions.

After the hearing, I had to pay a final fee of $45 and $2/copy for any certified copy.

And viola... name change over! At least in court... next came the driver's license, bank account, etc for me

I hope this helps you out!!! Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions... I can answer what I dealt with in my experience!

You're very welcome! It was scary seeming at first, but with a little help it was pretty easy to work through.
