It did stop on Wednesday morning, but started coming back in Wednesday night. I am assuming the Tongue is rising again?

You need to put a hole in the slab of your basement and put in a sump pump, the hole relives the pressure of the ground water forcing it to one spot. Then the sump pump does its work.

I think municipalities generally discourage draining sump pump discharge into the sanitary sewer system. It can overwhelm the sewage treatment plant. Not sure what Miles City's code is on that.

The Mayor just said in a radio interview that it is very bad to drain water into the sewer system. It could cause the water treatment plant to not only be overwhelmed but the bacteria can't work right. The water pumped into the river then wouldn't meet EPA standards and the town could be fined severely. There's a podcast of the interview on KATLs facebook page I believe. Also good info about FEMA funds for preventive work such as sump pumps and sandbags.

Also sumps pump sand and silt with the water and if you pump it into the City sewer it will plug and then you and your neighbors will have more than water to deal with!

Our plumber told us it is illegal to dump the water from our basement sump pump into the sewer system. Therefore, we are pumping it into what amounts to a gutter along the street. This, in turn, dumps into a storm drain and thus back into the river. That by-passes the treatment plant.

Herbie, I take offence to that remark you made. KYUS has supported many things in this community including being a partner with the duck races and walleyes unlimited among many other things. If you ever listen to our station, you will here many community projects being promoted by our station and this is all done for free. Just ask around and you will find out that we are great supporters of the community and push very hard to help people in this community in their worthwhile projects. So don't be so hard on us if you do not know the facts. Larry Coder KYUS/KMTA
