There are so many horrible lyrics in pop music. Who do you think has some really good ones? Either technically or for the message in them.

Here's my example. Whether or not you like Billy Joel, you have to admit these are some tight lyrics.

Only the Good Die Young - Billy Joel

Come out Virginia, don't let me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
aw But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one

well, They showed you a statue, told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
Aw, but they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done.....
Only the good die young
thats what i said
only the good die young x2

You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
aw But that never hurt no one

So come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal and I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
(you know)
Never lets in the sun
darlin only the good die young
woah
i tell ya
only the good die young x2

You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
mmmm, And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
(oh woah woah)

They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
the sinners are much more fun...

you know that only the good die young
thats what i said
i tell ya
only the good die young, X2

well your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
Aww She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me? oh woah woah

Come out come out come out virgina dont let me wait,
You Catholic girls start much too late
Sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one,
You know that only the good die young

I'm telling you baby
You know that only the good die young
Only the good die young
Only the gooooooooooooooood
Only the good die young
Only the gooooooooooooooood
Only the good die young
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooooooooo oooooooooo...

(Only the good die young)x2

The Grudge - Tool

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Terrified of being wrong. Ultimatum prison cell.

Saturn ascends, choose one or ten. Hang on or be humbled again.

Clutch it like a cornerstone. Otherwise it all comes down.
Justify denials and grip 'em to the lonesome end.
Saturn ascends, comes round again.
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten. Ignorant to the damage done.

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity.
Calculate what you will or will not tolerate.
Desperate to control all and everything.
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen.

Wear the grudge like a crown. Desperate to control.
Unable to forgive. And sinking deeper.

Defining, confining, sinking deeper. Controlling, defining, and we're sinking deeper.

Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let's you choose what you will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent.

Saturn comes back around. Lifts you up like a child or
Drags you down like a stone to
Consume you till you choose to let this go.
Choose to let this go.

Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated
anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges
into gold.

Let go.

Seven Spanish Angels - Willie Nelson and Ray Charles

He looked down into her brown eyes,
Said, " Say a prayer for me."
She threw her arms around him,
Whispered, "God will keep us free."
They could hear the riders comin,
He said, "This is my last fight.
If they take me back to Texas,
They won't take me back alive."

Chorus
There were seven Spanish Angels,
At the alter of the Sun.
They were prayin' for the lovers,
In the valley of the gun.
When the battle stopped,
And the smoke cleared.
There was thunder from the throne.
And seven Spanish angels,
Took another angel home.

She reached down and picked the gun up,
That lay smokin in his hand.
She said, "Father please forgive me,
I can't make it without my man."
And she knew the gun was empty,
And she knew she couldn't win.
Her final prayer was answered,
When the rifles fired again.

Chorus
There were seven Spanish Angels,
At the alter of the Sun.
They were prayin' for the lovers,
In the valley of the gun.
When the battle stopped,
And the smoke cleared.
There was thunder from the throne.
And seven Spanish angels,
Took another angel home.

Thrash Unreal - Against Me

If she wants to dance and drink all night well there's no one that can stop her.
She's going until the house lights come up or her stomach spills onto the floor.
This night is gonna to end when we're damn well ready for it to be over.
Worked all week long now the music is playing on our time.
Yeah we do what we do to get by, and then we need a release.

You get mixed up with the wrong guys.
You get messed up on the wrong drugs.
Sometimes the party takes you places that you didn't really plan on going.
When people see the track marks on her arms, she knows what they're thinking.
She keeps on working for that minimum,
as if a high school education gave you any other options.
You know, they don't know nothing about redemption.
They don't know nothing about recovery.
Some people just aren't the type for marriage and family.

No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to be a junkie.
No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to sleep alone.
No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to be a junkie.
No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to sleep alone.

Head Full Of Doubt, Road Full Of Promise - Avett Brothers

here's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
And it comes in black and it comes in white
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

When nothing is owed or deserved or expected
And your life doesn't change by the man that's elected
If you're loved by someone, you're never rejected
Decide what to be and go be it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There's a darkness upon you that's flooded in light
And in the fine print they tell you what's wrong and what's right
And it flies by day and it flies by night
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There was a dream and one day I could see it
Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it
And there was a kid with a head full of doubt
So I'll scream til I die and the last of those bad thoughts are finally out

There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
In the fine print they tell me what's wrong and what's right
There's a darkness upon me that's flooded in light
And I'm frightened by those that don't see it

My favorite during winter

JOHN HIATT
"Wintertime Blues"
I've been too long with my nose in a book
I hope you sing just as good as you look
Come on over baby, I got a song for you
A little jump of something I call
The wintertime blues

I wanna hear those mockingbird wings
I want gravy on everything
Lovin' in the kitchen
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of
These ol' wintertime blues

Cold as snot with a big frozen smile
Ain't foolin' nobody after a while
Time to let the cat out
I've got a real short fuse
I'm just about to blow up
These ol' wintertime blues

There's no spring
There was never any spring
Spring's a long gone thing
There won't ever be a spring no more

At least that's the way it feels when your
Skin is cracked and peeled
And you've been livin' under
Sixty pounds of blanket
And the snow's drifting up to your window
And you're out of firewood
And the wolf is howling at your door

Three hours of day light
And all of them gray
The suicide prevention group has all run away
I'm running out of groceries
I ain't got no rubber shoes
Bring the bacon baby
I got the wintertime blues

I could cut a hole in the floor
Catch you a fish by a quarter to four
But I'm stuck up this mountain
Where I got a bird's eye view
Of couple more months of these
Ol' wintertime blues

And it's a one, two
My lips are turning blue
Come on over baby
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of
These ol' wintertime blues

And it's three, four
I'm stiff as Al Gore
Come on over baby
What have we got to lose
Just a nasty case of these ol'
Wintertime blues

Well, it's the same old drill
For Punxsutawney Phil
If he sees his own shadow
I'm shootin' to kill

Come on over baby
I stand accused
There's a man going crazy up here
With the wintertime blues

I heard this on the radio yesterday....I probably haven't heard this song since the 1980s...it brough back some fond memories of the old days...I always like this lyrics, and I'm not one for lyrics...give me a backbeat anyday.

Face Dances, Pt. 2 - Pete Townshend

I watch you sit and twitching
With a match between your teeth
You seem to have a knack of moving it
It's in time to the beat

Face dances tonight
Fate chances moonlight

I can't be distracted
By the stuttering of the kids
I just sit enraptured
By your fluttering eye lids

I can only stare
You make me feel
Like I don't care

Your eyes explain a story
That never had a start
Your brow reveals the glory
That's hidden in your heart

Face dances tonight
Fate chances moonlight

Your skin is fine china
White as winter snows
Your lips are always shining
Turning up your nose

Face dances tonight
Fate chances moonlight

I can only stare
You make me feel
Like I don't care

I'da Called You Woody, Joe by the Gaslight Anthem

I was crawling around in my head in the haze of a trance.
Rico said, "I'ma turn you onto a sound, cool out your head.
This is the sound from Camden town."

And then I heard it like a shot through my skull to my brain,
I felt my fingertips tingle and it started to rain,
When the walls of my bedroom were tremblin' around me,
This ramshackle voice over attack of a bluesbeat,
Tellin' me he's only looking for fun.
This was the sound of the very last gang in town.

As heard by my wild young heart, like directions on a cold dark night,
Sayin', 'Let it out... You're doin' all right.'
And I heard it in his chain gang soul.
It wasn't just the same sad song.
Saying, 'Let it out, you're doing all right.'
And I'm doing all right, are you doin' all right?

And I carried these songs like a comfort wherever I'd go.
They was there when my summers was high, there when she left me alone.
Saying... 'The soul is hard to find.'

And I never got to tell him so I just wrote it down,
I wrapped a couple chords around it and I let it come out,
When the walls of my bedroom trembled around me,
To this ramshackle voice over attack of a bluesbeat,
And a girl, on the excitement gang.
That was the sound of the very last gang in town.

[Chorus]

That was the sound...
I hear the sound...
Do you hear the sound....
I hear the sound...
Of the very last gang in town...

'59 Sound - Gaslight Anthem
Well, I wonder which song they're gonna play when we go.
I hope it's something quiet and minor and peaceful and slow.
When we float out into the ether, into the Everlasting Arms,
I hope we don't hear Marley's chains we forged in life.
'Cause the chains I been hearing now for most of my life.

Did you hear the '59 Sound coming through on Grandmama's radio?
Did you hear the rattling chains in the hospital walls?
Did you hear the old gospel choir when they came to carry you over?
Did you hear your favorite song one last time?

And I wonder were you scared when the metal hit the glass?
See, I was playing a show down the road
When your spirit left your body.
And they told me on the front lawn.
I'm sorry I couldn't go,
But I still know the song and the words and her name and the reasons.
And I know 'cause we were kids and we used to hang.

[Chorus]

Young boys, young girls, ain't supposed to die on a Saturday night.

Steve Earle

Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only come a town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never come back from Copperhead Road

Grandaddy ran whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
When the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road

I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first,'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Now the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road

Copperhead Road

Abide with me; fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide;
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;
Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see-
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's pow'r?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;
Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

and my favorite verse:

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;
Heav'n's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

"It Must Have Been the Roses"
Words and music by Robert Hunter
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission.

Annie layed her head down in the roses
She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons
in her long brown hair
I don't know, it must have been the roses
All I know is I could not leave her there

I don't know, it must have been the roses
The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair
I don't know maybe it was the roses
All I know was I could not leave her there

Ten years the waves rolled the
ships home from the sea
Thinking well how it may blow
in all good company
if I tell another what
your own lips told to me
may I lay neath the roses
and my eyes no longer see

I don't know, it must have been the roses
The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair
I don't know maybe it was the roses
All I know was I could not leave her there

One pane of glass in the window
No one is complaining though,
come in and shut the door
Faded is the crimson from the
ribbons that she wore
and it's strange how no one
comes round anymore

I don't know, it must have been the roses
The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair
I don't know maybe it was the roses
All I know was I could not leave her there

Annie layed her head down in the roses
She had ribbons, ribbons, ribbons
in her long brown hair
I don't know, it must have been the roses
All I know was I could not leave her there

I don't know, it must have been the roses
The roses or the ribbons in her long brown hair
I don't know maybe it was the roses
All I know was I could not leave her there

Thunder Road

The screen door slams
Mary's dress waves
Like a vision she dances across the porch
As the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide 'neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair
Well the night's busting open
These two lanes will take us anywhere
We got one last chance to make it real
To trade in these wings on some wheels
Climb in back
Heaven's waiting on down the tracks
Oh oh come take my hand
Riding out tonight to case the promised land
Oh oh Thunder Road, oh Thunder Road
oh Thunder Road
Lying out there like a killer in the sun
Hey I know it's late we can make it if we run
Oh Thunder Road, sit tight take hold
Thunder Road

Well I got this guitar
And I learned how to make it talk
And my car's out back
If you're ready to take that long walk
From your front porch to my front seat
The door's open but the ride it ain't free
And I know you're lonely
For words that I ain't spoken
But tonight we'll be free
All the promises'll be broken
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets

They scream your name at night in the street
Your graduation gown lies in rags at their feet
And in the lonely cool before dawn
You hear their engines roaring on
But when you get to the porch they're gone
On the wind, so Mary climb in
It's a town full of losers
And I'm pulling out of here to win.

I dedicate this song to an old hitch-hikin friend of mine who went the way of Pancho. Not exactly the same way but the end results are the same. I was lucky to have known him.

Pancho And Lefty

Songwriter: Townes Van Zandt,
Sung by: Willie and Merle

Living on the road, my friend
Was gonna keep you free and clean
Now you wear your skin like iron
Your breath's as hard as kerosene

You weren't your mama's only boy
But her favorite one it seems
She began to cry when you said goodbye
And sank into your dreams

Pancho was a bandit boy
His horse was fast as polished steel
Wore his gun outside his pants
For all the honest world to feel

Pancho met his match you know
On the deserts down in Mexico
Nobody heard his dying words
That's the way it goes

All the federales say
Could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

Lefty, he can't sing the blues
All night long like he used to
The dust that Pancho bit down south
Ended up in Lefty's mouth

The day they laid poor Pancho low
Lefty split for Ohio
Where he got the bread to go
There ain't nobody knows

All the federales say
Could have had him any day
They only let him slip away
Out of kindness I suppose

Poets tell how Pancho fell
Lefty's livin' in a cheap hotel
The desert's quiet and Cleveland's cold
So the story ends we're told

Pancho needs your prayers, it's true
But save a few for Lefty too
He only did what he had to do
And now he's growing old

All the federales say
Could have had him any day
They only let him go so long
Out of kindness I suppose

A few gray federales say
Could have had him any day
They only let him hang around
Out of kindness I suppose

I think Bread originally wrote and performed this but I like Cake's version of "The Guitar Man"

Who draws the crowd, who plays so loud baby, it's the guitar man.
Who's gonna steal the show, you know, baby, it's the guitar man.
He can make you love, he can make you cry,
He will break you down, he will get you high.
And something keeps him going miles and miles away,
to find another place to play,

and night after night - who treats you right, baby, it's the guitar man.
who's on the radio, you know, baby it's the guitar man

when he comes to town and you see his face
and you think you might like to take his place
something keeps him drifting miles and miles away
searching for the songs to play
then you listen to the music and you'd like to sing along
and you want to get the meaning out of each and every song
and you find yourself a message and some words to call your own..
and take 'em home.
he can make you love, he can get you high
he will bring you down, he will make you cry
something keeps him moving, but no one seems to know
what it is that makes him go
then the lights being to flicker and the sound is getting dim
the voice begins to falter and the crowds are getting thin
but he never seems to notice he's just gotta find another place to play.
anyway.....
got to play...
anyway...

Robert Hunter writes great lyrics.
Two more from the GD that I like:

U.S. Blues
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Red and white, blue suede shoes
I'm Uncle Sam, how do you do
Gimme five, still alive
Ain't no luck, I learned to duck

Check my pulse, it don't change
Stay seventy two, come shine or rain
Wave the flag, pop the bag
Rock the boat, skin the goat

Chorus
Wave that flag, wave it wide and high
Summertime done come and gone, my oh my

I'm Uncle Sam, that's who I am
Been hiding out, in a rock and roll band
Shake the hand that shook the hand
Of P. T. Barnum and Charlie Chan (note 1)

Shine your shoes, light your fuse
Can you use them old U.S. Blues
I'll drink your health, share your wealth
Run your life, steal your wife

[chorus]

Back to back, chicken shack
Son of a gun, better change your act
We're all confused, what's to lose
You can call this song the United States Blues (note 2)

[chorus]

Standing on the Moon
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Jerry Garcia

Standing on the moon, I got no cobweb on my shoe
Standing on the moon, I'm feeling so alone and blue
I see the Gulf of Mexico as tiny as a tear
The coast of California must be somewhere over here
Over here

Standing on the moon, I see the battle rage below
Standing on the moon, I see the soldiers come and go
There's a metal flag beside me someone planted long ago
Old glory standing stiffly, crimson, white and indigo
Old glory standing stiffly, crimson, white and indigo
Indigo

I see all of South East Asia; I can see El Salvador
I hear the cries of children and the other songs of war
It's like a mighty melody that rings down from the sky
Standing here upon the moon I watch it all roll by
All roll by
All roll by
All roll by

Standing on the moon, I see a shadow on the sun
Standing on the moon, the stars go fading one by one
I hear a cry of victory, another of defeat
A scrap of age-old lullaby down some forgotten street

Standing on the moon, where talk is cheap and vision true
Standing on the moon, but I would rather be with you
Somewhere in San Francisco on a back porch in July
Just looking up to heaven at this crescent in the sky
In the sky

Standing on the moon with nothing left to do
A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you
A lovely view of heaven but I'd rather be with you
Be with you
I'd rather be with you

Bad Religion: Beyond Electric Dreams

Here we go now

No one here can show you where it is but I can point to a sign
On the roof of the world without apparent design
The frozen definition of a lunatic ambition to rise
The air is thin, the future dim, dimension hard to find

Up on a mountain encased in solar rays
Beyond electric dreams of inarticulate passion plays
Coming down a mountain, eons have a human ring
The conversation of impassive planets
Intercepted by a human being

Ratioclination is a practicable way to derive
An attitude of altitude and probity by which to abide
Or maybe a theophany of flaming creosote in disguise
The air is thin, the future dim, dimension undefined

Up on a mountain encased in solar rays
Beyond electric dreams of inarticulate passion plays
Coming down a mountain, eons have a human ring
The conversation of impassive planets
Intercepted by a human being

Here glaring cold in the crystalline geometry of night,
Obscuring form and tracing faceless fears
Of a suprahuman immensity in a patch of sand
Or a raptors guileless shivering intensity,
I'm only a visitor,
And atom of atoms on a jutting red splattered synagogue of granite
As it crouches literally in space,
A frozen amoral giant gazing heavenward forever

Let's go where the raptor goes to the mountain in a cosmic glow
We'll have a genuine terrestrial show on a mountain - on a mountain
Let's scan the horizon clean for any trace of human schemes
And try to touch upon immortal themes on a mountain - on a mountain

I too like Springsteen's Thunder Road. Another Bruce favorite of mine is Born To Run. Makes you want to fire up the hog and go cruisin'. Which is kind of hard to do since I don't have a hog and there is about 4 feet of snow on the ground and it is raining freezing rain. Oh well

Born To Run lyrics

In the day we sweat it out in the streets
of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through mansions of glory
in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected
And steppin' out over the line, oooh,
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
It's a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we're young
'Cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs 'round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines
Together we could break this trap
We'll run till we drop, baby we'll never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta know how it feels
I wanna know if your love is wild
Girl I want to know if love is real

Beyond the Palace hemi-powered drones
scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
Kids are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you Wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss
The highway's jammed with broken heroes
On a last chance power drive
Everybody's out on the run tonight
And there's no place left to hide
Together Wendy we can live with the sadness
I'll love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when
We're gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go
And we'll walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us
Baby we were born to run

Debbie just hit the wall
She never had it all
One Prozac a day
Husband's a CPA
Her dreams went out the door
When she turned 24.
Only been with one man
What happened to her plan?

She was gonna be an actress
She was gonna be a star
She was gonna shake her ass
On the hood of White Snake's car
Her yellow SUV is now the enemy
Looks at her average life
And nothing, has been...
all right since

Bruce Springsteen, Madonna
Way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
Cuz she's still preoccupied
With 19, 19, 1985

Woo Hoo Hooooo!
(1985)
Woo Hoo Hooooo!

She's seen all the classics
She knows every line
"Breakfast Club", "Pretty In Pink"
Even "St. Elmo's Fire"
She rocked out to Wham!
Not a big Limp Bizkit fan
Thought she'd get a hand
On a member of Duran Duran

Where's the mini-skirt made of snakeskin?
And who's the other guy that's singing in Van Halen?
When did reality become T.V.?
What ever happened to sitcoms, game shows,
(on the radio was)

way before Nirvana
There was U2 and Blondie
And music still on MTV
Her two kids in high school
They tell her that she's uncool
Cuz she's still preoccupied

Woo Hoo Hooooo!

She hates time, make it stop
When did Motley Crue become classic rock?
And when did Ozzy become an actor?
Please make this stop, stop, STOP(tick tick tick) and bring back

Makeshift Patriot
The Flag Shop Is Out Of Stock
I Hang Myself at Half Mast

It's the Makeshift
The Patriot
The Flag Shop is Out of Stock
I hang myself... via live telecast

Coming live from my own funeral, beautiful weather offered a nice shine
Which is suitable for a full view of a forever altered skyline
When times like these arrive I freestyle biased opinions every other sentence
Journalistic ethics slip when I pass them off as objective
"Don't give me that ethical s**t."
I've got exclusive, explicit images to present to impressionable American kids
And it's time to show this world how big our edifice is!

That's exactly what they attacked when a typically dark skinned Disney villain
Used civilians against civilians and charged the Trojan horses into our buildings
Using commercial aviation as instruments of destruction
Pregnant women couldn't protect their children
Wheelchairs were stairway obstructions
Now have to back petal...from the shower of glass and metal
Wondering how after it settles we'll find who provided power to radical rebels
The Melting Pot seems to be calling the kettle black when it boils over
But only on our own soil so the little boy holds a toy soldier..
And waits for the suit and tie to come home. We won't wait 'til he's older
before we destroy hopes for a colder war to end
"Now get a close up of his head"

Makeshift Patriot

Makeshift Patriot
The Flag Shop Is Out of Stock

Makeshift Patriot
The Flag Shop Is Out Of Stock
I Hang Myself at Half Mast
"Looks just like a movie"

It's the make shift
The patriot
The Flag Shop is Out of Stock
I hang myself
"while the stock markets crash"

The city is covered in inches of muck
I see some other pictures of victims are up
Grieving mothers are thinking their children are stuck
Leaping lovers are making decisions to jump
While holding hands...to escape the brutal heat
Sometimes in groups of the three
The fall out was far beyond the toxic cloud where people look like debris
But all they saw after all was said...beyond the talking heads
Was the bloody dust with legs looking like the walking dead calling for meds
but Hospitals are overwhelmed. Volunteers need to go the hell home
Moments of silence for fire fighters were interrupted by cell phones
Who's gonna to make that call to increase an unknown death toll?
It's the one we rally behind
He's got a megaphone...and he's promising to make heads roll
we cheer him on, but asbestos is affecting our breath control
The lesser we know...the more they fabricate...the easier it is to sell souls

(Man talking)
There is a new price on freedom, so buy into it while supplies last.
Changes need to be made;
No more curbside baggage,
Seven pm curfew,
Racial profiling will continue with less bitching.
We've unified over who to kill, so until I find more relevant scripture to quote,
Remember, our god is bigger, stronger, smarter, and much wealthier.
So wave those flags with pride, especially the white part.

We sell an addictive 24 hour candle light vigils in TV's
Freedom will be defended...at the cost of civil liberties
The viewers are glued to television screens
Stuck... cause lots of things seem too sick
I use opportunities to pluck heart strings for theme music
I'll show you which culture to pump your fist at, which foot is right to kiss
we don't really know who the culprit is yet...but he looks like this
we know who the heroes are. Not the xenophobes who act hard
"We taught that dog to squat, how dare he do that s**t in our own back yard!"
They happened to scar our financial state and char our landscape
Can you count how many times so far I ran back this same damn tape?
While a camera man creates news and shoves it down our throats on the West Bank
With a ten second clip put on constant loop to provoke US angst
So get your tanks and load your guns and hold your sons in a family huddle
Cos even if we win this tug of war and even the score...humanity struggles
There's a desperate need of blood for what's been uncovered under the rubble
Some of them dug for answers in the mess...but the rest were looking for trouble

Makeshift patriot
The flag shop is out of stock
I hang myself at half mast.

The patriot
The flag shop is out of stock

Jah Didn't Kill Johnny - Sage Francis

Yeah. Holler at ya boy
Holler at your boy. Do poop
Do remember, Holler at your boy
Go back, a few weeks on this one. Go way way back
This life aint for everyone,
But for some of us. Yeah. Life is easy
This song right here, going out a childhood mentor of mine, father John.
Holler.
Touched me as a kid, i want you to know, still feeling you.
Life is easy
Jah didn't kill Johnny
He had a date with death
It was a slow train coming
And we've all got a train to catch
But Lord, take your filthy claws off the rest of my friends.
That is, of course, if they ain't already dead.
I make no demands. I just make amends.
I make my bed and I'm a lie in it
But before I die...please...don't take anymore of my friends.
Please don't take anymore of my friends. Life is easy.
The smoke didn't kill Johnny. The drink didn't kill Johnny.
The junk didn't kill Johnny. And the women didn't kill Johnny.
Was it the road? I don't know. Was it rock and roll? I don't think so.
But God, God, God, God, God...would never...kill...Johnny Cash
He had a train to catch.
He had a date with death
And we've all got a train to catch.
Life is easy. Holler at ya boy. Life is easy.

Bridgier,
Did you leave out the third verse of Thrash Unreal on purpose? They were playing a third verse live last night, and it sounded familiar, but I thought maybe it wasn't on the album version. But it is.

Also...

Reinventing Axl Rose by Against Me!

We want a band that plays loud and hard every night.
That doesn't care how many people are counted at the door.
That would travel one million miles and ask for nothing but a plate of food and a place to rest.
They'd strike chords that cut like a knife.
It would mean so much more than a t-shirt or ticket stub.
They would stop at nothing short of a massacre.
Everyone would leave with the memory that there was no place else in the world and this was where they always belonged.
We would dance like no one was watching,
with one fist in the air.
Our arenas just basements and bookstores across an underground America.
With this fire we could.
We want a scene where the music is free,
where beer is not the life of the party.
Where there's no need to poop talk or impress
cause honesty and emotion are not looked down upon.
And every promise that's made and bragged would be meant if not kept.
We'd do it all because we have to not because we know why.
Beyond a gender race and class we could find what really holds us back.
Let's make everybody sing that they are the beginning and ending of everything.
That we are all stronger than everything they taught us we should fear.

Uhm... no. That must have been a cut and paste error.

Here is "Thrash Unreal", in its full glory:

Thrash Unreal - Against Me
If she wants to dance and drink all night,
Well there's no one that can stop her.
She's going until the house lights come up,
Or her stomach spills onto the floor.
This night is going to end,
When we're damn well ready for it to be over.
Worked all week long now,
The music is playing on our time.
Yeah we do what we do to get by,
And then we need a release.

You get mixed up with the wrong guys,
You get messed up on the wrong drugs.
Sometimes the party takes you places that you didn't really plan on going,
When people see the track marks on her arms.
She knows what they're thinking,
She keeps on working for that minimum.
As if a high school education gave you any other options.
They don't know nothing about redemption,
They don't know nothing about recovery.
Some people just aren't,
The type for marriage and family.

No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to be a junkie,
No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to sleep alone.
[X2]

She's out of step with the style,
She don't know where the actions happening.
You know the downtown club scene ain't nothing like it used to be,
You reach a point where there's not a lie in the world.
That you could use to make the boys believe your still in you twenties,
Well they just keep gettin younger don't they baby?
She's not waiting for them to come over and ask for the privilege,
She can still here that Rebel Yell just as loud as it was in 1983.
There ain't no Johnny coming home to share a bed with her,
And she doesn't care.

No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to be a junkie.
No mother ever dreams that her daughters going to grow up to sleep alone.
[X3]

If she had to live it all over again you know she wouldn't change,
Anything for the world.

My apologies.

What do you think of "I Was A Teenage Anarchist"?

Gets you to thinking about what you'd do with one minute left to live.

Last Minute on Earth - The Flower Kings

Last minute on earth
what would you do, who would you call?
Your mobile is down,
who will write the history of that final day?

That last minute on earth
one minute alone, lost word or cause
for one who had everything,
now unfold this scary beautiful end

Last minute on earth
saving your last famous words
maybe just whistle a tune on a plain bird of clay

Last minute on earth
fractions of time is all that is left
You used to kill time,
now it's time who's killing you, they've closed the store

Last minute on earth
waiting to fly like pigs in the dirt
gold 'round your neck,
but your wings are broken, bent & burnt they say

Last minute alive
check your account, to buy a way out
beating the clock,
but you cannot beat the feeling of being alive!!!

Last minute on earth
saving your last famous words
maybe just whistle a tune on a plain bird of clay

Last minute on earth, in the rapids of time
A story on wheels without rhythm (or rhyme)
Racing the memory lane, high and low
You own the world but got nowhere else to go

Last fraction of hope, a flickering light
Voices so clear step out of the night
...go talk to your God instead of talk to yourself
Look into the light if you're looking for help!!!

A complete change of pace,as well as time frame, and maybe cuz it's close to Valentines day.

Tony Bennett Lyrics

Once upon a time a girl with moonlite in her eyes
Put her hand in mine and said she loved me so
But that was once upon a time, very long ago

Once upon a time we sat beneath a willow tree
Counting all the stars and waiting for the dawn
But that was once upon a time, now the tree is gone

How the breeze ruffled up her hair
How we always laughed as tho tomorrow wasen't there
Where did it go?

Once upon a time the world was sweeter than we knew
Every thing was ours, how happy we were then
But somehow once upon a time never comes again

You see the world through your cynical eyes
You're a troubled young man I can tell
You've got it all in the palm of your hand
But your hand's wet with sweat and your head needs a rest
You're foolin' yourself if you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
How can you be such an angry young man
When your future looks quite bright to me
How can there be such a sinister plan
That could hide such a lamb, such a caring young man

You're foolin' yourself if you don't believe it
You're kidding yourself if you don't believe it
Get up, get back on your feet
You're the one they can't beat and you know it
Come on, let's see what you've got
Just take your best shot and don't blow it

@Bridgier,
Lyrically? I think it's a pretty good song. I'm a little over Against Me complaining about being targeted by the close- minded punk rock scene though. I know they got rocks thrown at their van and their tires slashed and they got called, "sellouts", but I'd guess that's by a small minority of their fans. I'd guess a lot of their fans don't care what record label they are on. Complaining about a group of people because of a few jack@sses that belong to that group is getting old.
Musically, I think it's the only listenable song on a pretty unlistenable album.

Well, you seem to know a LOT more about Against Me than I do: I don't know if I've heard anything else off of that album to tell you the truth.

I think I read somewhere that the lead singer tends to rub people the wrong way - but "Teenage Anarchist" is still a pretty cool song, along with Thrash Unreal.

Anyways - more lyrics:
Last Letter Home - Dropkick Murphys
Hello there my dearest love
Today I write to you about our sons
The boys start school today
They're the spitting image of you in every way

Hey son it's Dad
I hope this letter finds you well out of harm's way
We saw the news today it frightened your Mom
Now all she does is pray

[Chorus:]
If I lead will you follow?
Will you follow if I lead?

Hey Melissa it's me don't be afraid
I'm in good hands I'm gonna be home soon
It's time to watch the children grow up
I wanna be more than a voice on the phone

Thanks Ma I got your package today
I love "The Fields Of Athenry"
I swear I want 'em to play that song on the pipes
At my funeral when I die

[Chorus]

I stand alone in the distance
And the foreground slowly moves

[Chorus]

"We regret to inform you that on January 28th Sgt. Andrew
Farrar died while serving his country in the Al-Anbar province
of Iraq words cannot convey our sorrow"

[Chorus]

When there's nothing on the horizon
You've got nothing left to prove

If I lead will you follow?

The Murphys did, in fact, perform "Fields Of Athenry" at Sgt. Farrar's funeral.

I heard this on the radio yesterday and actually "heard" the lyrics for the first time. That Johnny Cash was quite a showman!

"A Boy Named Sue"

My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me "Sue."

Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named "Sue."

Well, I grew up quick and I grew up mean,
My fist got hard and my wits got keen,
I'd roam from town to town to hide my shame.
But I made a vow to the moon and stars
That I'd search the honky-tonks and bars
And kill that man who gave me that awful name.

Well, it was Gatlinburg in mid-July
And I just hit town and my throat was dry,
I thought I'd stop and have myself a brew.
At an old saloon on a street of mud,
There at a table, dealing stud,
Sat the dirty, mangy dog that named me "Sue."

Well, I knew that snake was my own sweet dad
From a worn-out picture that my mother'd had,
And I knew that scar on his cheek and his evil eye.
He was big and bent and gray and old,
And I looked at him and my blood ran cold
And I said: "My name is 'Sue!' How do you do!
Now your gonna die!!"

Well, I hit him hard right between the eyes
And he went down, but to my surprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
But I busted a chair right across his teeth
And we crashed through the wall and into the street
Kicking and a' gouging in the mud and the blood and the beer.

I tell ya, I've fought tougher men
But I really can't remember when,
He kicked like a mule and he bit like a crocodile.
I heard him laugh and then I heard him cuss,
He went for his gun and I pulled mine first,
He stood there lookin' at me and I saw him smile.

And he said: "Son, this world is rough
And if a man's gonna make it, he's gotta be tough
And I knew I wouldn't be there to help ya along.
So I give ya that name and I said goodbye
I knew you'd have to get tough or die
And it's the name that helped to make you strong."

He said: "Now you just fought one hell of a fight
And I know you hate me, and you got the right
To kill me now, and I wouldn't blame you if you do.
But ya ought to thank me, before I die,
For the gravel in ya guts and the spit in ya eye
Cause I'm the son-of-a-bitch that named you "Sue.'"

I got all choked up and I threw down my gun
And I called him my pa, and he called me his son,
And I came away with a different point of view.
And I think about him, now and then,
Every time I try and every time I win,
And if I ever have a son, I think I'm gonna name him
Bill or George! Anything but Sue! I still hate that name!

Uneasy Rider - (Charlie Daniels' first hit)

I was takin' a trip out to L.A.
Toolin' along in my Chevrolet
Tokin' on a number and diggin' on the radio

Just as I crossed the Mississippi line
I heard that highway start to whine
And I knew that left rear tire was about to blow

Well the spare was flat and I got uptight
'Cause there wasn't a filling station in sight
So I just limped on down the shoulder on the rim

I went as far as I could and when I stopped the car
It was right in front of this little bar,
Kind of a red-neck lookin' joint called the "Dew Drop Inn"

Well I stuffed my hair up under my hat
And told the bartender that I had a flat
And would he be kind enough to give me change for a "one"

Well there was one thing I was sure proud to see
There wasn't a soul in the place except for him and me, and
He just looked disgusted and pointed toward the telephone

I called up the station down the road a ways and
He said he wasn't very busy today
And he could have somone out there in just about 10 minutes or so.

He said, "Now, you just stay right where yer at!"
And I didn't bother to tell the dern fool
That I sure as hell didn't have anyplace else to go.

I ordered up a beer and sat down at the bar
When some guy walked in and said, "Who owns this car
With the peace sign, the mag wheels and the four on the floor?"

Well he looked at me and I damn near died
And I decided that I'd just wait outside
So I laid a dollar on the bar and headed for the door.

Just when I thought I'd get outta there with my skin
These five big dudes come strollin' in
With this one old drunk chick and some fella with green teeth.

Now I was almost to the door when the biggest one
Said, "You tip your hat to this lady, son!"
And when I did, all that hair fell out from underneath.

Now the last thing I wanted was to get into a fight
In Jackson Mississippi on a Saturday night
Especially when there was three of them and only one of me.

They all started laughin' and I felt kinda sick
And I knew I better think of something pretty quick
So I just reached out and kicked old Green-Teeth right in the knee.

Now he let out a yell that'd curl yer hair
But before he could move I grabbed me a chair
And said "Watch him folks, 'cause he's a thorougly dangerous man!"

"Well you may not know it but this man's a spy!
He's a undercover agent for the FBI
And he's been sent down here to infiltrate the Ku Klux Klan!"

He was still bent over holdin' on to his knee
But everybody else was lookin' and listenin' to me
And I laid it on thicker and heavier as I went.

I said "Would you believe this man has gone as far
As tearing Wallace stickers off the bumpers of cars
And he voted for George McGovern for President."

"Well he's a friend of them long haired, hippy-type, pinko fags!
I betcha he's even got a commie flag
Tacked up on the wall inside of his garage."

"He's a snake in the grass, I tell ya, guys,
He may look dumb but that's just a disguise;
He's a mastermind in the ways of espionage."

They all started lookin' real suspicious at him and
He jumped up and said "Now just wait a minute, Jim!
You know he's lyin,' I been livin' here all of my life!"

"I'm a faithful follower of Brother John Birch
And I belong to the Antioch Baptist Church.
And I ain't even got a garage, you can call home and ask my wife!"

Then he started saying somethin' 'bout the way I was dressed
But I didn't wait around to hear the rest,
I was too busy movin' and hopin' I didn't run outta luck.

And when I hit the door I was makin' tracks
And they were just taking my car down off the jacks
So I threw the man a twenty and jumped in and fired that mother up.

Mario Andretti woulda sure been proud
Of the way I was movin' when I passed that crowd,
Comin' out the door and headed toward me at a trot.

And I guess I shoulda gone ahead and run,
But somehow I just couldn't resist the fun
Of chasin' them all just once around the parking lot.

Well they headed for their car but I hit the gas and
Spun around and headed 'em off at the pass
I was slingin' gravel and puttin' a ton o' dust in the air.

Well I had them all out there steppin' and fetchin'
Like their heads was on fire and their asses was catchin'
but I figgered I'd better go ahead and split before the cops got there.

When I hit the road I was really wheelin'
Had gravel flyin' and rubber squealin'
And I didn't slow down till I was almost to Arkansas.

Well I think I'm gonna reroute my trip
I wonder if anybody'd think I'd flipped
If I went to L.A., via Omaha?

The Ballad of Waterhole #3 (Code of The West)
--Roger Miller

The code of the west ain't some words on a page
You just naturally know it when you come of age
You eat when you're hungry, you drink when you're dry
You look every man in the eye

It's the code of the west when the boys talk of women
The code of the west what you know you don't tell
The code of the west a man soaps his own saddle
Brands his own cattle and some of his neighbour's as well

If you're buildin' fences then I ain't for hire
You get me for nothin' and I'll bring the wire
You patch up my windows, I'll plumb up your doors
If you scratch my back I'll scratch yours

It's the code of the west you must honour your neighbour
The code of the west to your own self be true
The code of the west you must do unto others
Do unto others before them others do it unto you

Jessica Lea Mayfield

i was walking with your left hand in my back pocket
and i stared at the sky while you kissed me
and you were running away- away from everything
and i stayed behind so you'd miss me

and while these words may sound so sweet
i could care less about you, care less about you
and how i love the sound of you walking away
and i can see clearer and i'm getting closer
to finding out just who i am without you in the way
so hold me
but only
for today

despite my best ambitions
i get into the worst situations
but here i am crystal clean

and all the nights are lonely
the words i say to you are phony
because there's nothing left to say

and though you say you can't live without me
and every single night you think about me
i could care less about you, care less about you
and how i love the sound of you walking away
and i can see clearer and i'm getting closer
to finding out just who i am without you in the way
so hold me
but only
for today

Down The Road
Lyrics: Robert Hunter
Music: Hart, Jenkins, Welnick, Hidalgo

Originally played by Mickey Hart with Mystery Box, and then with some of his
other bands. Now played by him with The Dead.

Down the road to Union Station running through the fog
I thought I saw Joe Hill last night grinning like a dog
"I understand they did you in for everyone to see"
He smiled - shook his head - "that's a lie," said he
"I been on a mountain top observing from a cloud
Been in the hearts of workers milling with the crowd
My tears are shed for freedom and equality of means
My blood and perspiration oil the gears of your machine"

Chorus
Down the road again
Down the road again

Down the road to Massachusetts driving through the night
I thought I saw Jack Kennedy hitchhiking by a light
I hit the brakes - backed up slow, and Kennedy got in
I said, "It's nice to see you lookin' back in shape again
Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they gunned you down"
He just shook his head and looked off sadly with a frown
Said, "bullets are like waves, they only rearrange the sand
History turns upon the tides and not the deeds of man"

[chorus]

Driving down to Fiddler's Green to hear a tune or two
I thought I saw John Lennon there, looking kind of blue
I sat down beside him, said "I thought you bought the store"
He said "I heard that rumour, what can I do you for?"
"Have you written anything I might have never heard?"
He picked up his guitar and strummed a minor third
All I can recall of what he sang, for what it's worth
"Long as songs of mine are sung I'm with you on this earth"

[chorus]

From the corner of my eye I saw the sun explode
I didn't look directly 'cause it would have burned my soul
When the smoke and thunder cleared enough to look around
I heard a sweet guitar lick, an old familiar sound
I heard a laugh I recognised come rolling from the earth
Saw it rise into the skies like lightning giving birth
It sounded like Garcia but I couldn't see the face
Just the beard and the glass and a smile on empty space

[chorus]

This one from 1965, courtesy of Jagger-Richards, is for Bridgier:

I'm not talking about the kind of clothes she wears
Look at that stupid girl
I'm not talking about the way she combs her hair
Look at that stupid girl

The way she powders her nose
Her vanity shows and it shows
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

I'm not talking about the way she digs for gold
Look at that stupid girl
Well, I'm talking about the way she grabs and holds
Look at that stupid girl

The way she talks about someone else
That she don't even know herself
She's the sickest thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

Well, I'm sick and tired
And I really have my doubts
I've tried and tried
But it never really works out

Like a lady in waiting to a virgin queen
Look at that stupid girl
She bitches 'bout things that she's never seen
Look at that stupid girl

It doesn't matter if she dyes her hair
Or the color of the shoes she wears
She's the worst thing in this world
Well, look at that stupid girl

She purrs like a catcat
Then she turns 'round and hisses back
She's the sickest thing in this world
Look at that stupid girl

Did anybody guess that I like the GD?

Ripple
Lyrics By: Robert Hunter
Music By: Jerry Garcia
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near, as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand if your cup be empty
If your cup is full may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of man

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall, you fall alone
If you should stand, then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way, I would take you home

Just had to add another song.

Creedence Lyrics: Looking Out My Back Door

Just got home from Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Got to sit down, take a rest on the porch.
Imagination sets in, pretty soon I'm singing,

CHORUS:
Doo, doo, doo, Looking out my back door.
There's a giant doing cartwheels,
A statue wearing high heels.
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
A dinosaur Victrola listening to Buck Owens.

CHORUS

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Wond'rous apparition provided by magician.

CHORUS

Tambourines and elephants are playing in the band.
Won't you take a ride on the flying spoon?
Doo, doo doo.
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows.

CHORUS

Forward troubles Illinois, lock the front door, oh boy!
Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn.
Bother me tomorrow, today, I'll buy no sorrows.

CHORUS
