Burning pallets
Posted by mtgman (+94) 13 years ago
I wish businesses would find something to do with old pallets.Like take them to the dump! People pick them up and burn them at the rivers and,Make a big mess of nails and staples all over.I guess people don't know there is wood all over the river banks. If they need a fire.

The only place I know that lets people have them is the star.

We have some friends that have neighbors qho burn them for heat! Makes our friends SICK and their kids too. They told them but the neighbors said that's all they can afford. I was visiting one day and became physically ill and had to leave from the smell from inside the house.

Any business who places the pallets next to the trash can allows people to take them. The Star, Blue Rock, Walmart, etc etc.

Well then they need to stop.

So, what should be done with them? Do we pile pallets up forever and ever? They have to be disposed of. I don't know why they should be so sickening when burned, as they aren't treated. Usually, they are hardwood and can be reused.

What is your solution? Fill up the dump? Ignore the pile until it reaches heaven? Have a law preventing the burning of wood pallets? You can't just say 'stop' unless you have an alternative.

Well all I can tell you is people burn them down by the river, which results in a big mess,Leaving nails and staples all over the ground. If they can't be used they should be hauled to the dump where making a mess is no big thing. Why don't you drive down to any fishing access along the tounge river and you'll see what I mean.

Use them to fence in the expanding population of chickens.

Our compost heap is made out of pallets. There are lots of uses for them. They are usually hardwood, so the BTUs are better than in local wood.

The problem isn't people burning them at fishing access sites. It is people not picking up after themselves at fishing access sites. I have often concluded that people who use fishing access sites are the biggest slobs on the planet so a few nails from pallets isn't the problem. The jackasses who leave the nails are.

While I agree that it isn't the pallets that make the mess, it's the people who don't pick up are the ones that do. Please don't include all people who use the access sites into your conclusion, that is very insulting to a lot of people.

This is probably (if not most likely) not economically feasible in Miles City, however there is a place here that takes pallets and resells them -- kind of like pallet recycling.

There you go, an idea for a business -- gather and resell them in quantity. Get a truckload and ship them off -- just hitch up with the suppliers to give them out for free (to prevent the above) and add a little refurbishing here or there if necessary.

I wouldn't recommend burning them in a home environment if they've been treated.

Amorette,Are you dumb? There are more than a few nails in a pallet. If you need a fire at the river, there is plenty of wood down there. And who's going to pick up a hot ash pile when they leave?

Stick to what you know!

Then the people should return later to clean up after themselves. Or BRING WOOD WITH THEM if a fire is a necessity. Or disassemble the pallets before hand. I own a cute device called a nail puller. I removed a hardwood floor with it and once you get the hang of it, it takes a second to pull the nail. If feeble little me can remove hundreds of nails, then I'd bet some hardy fishing access site user could, too.

Again, be less lazy beforehand or clean up afterwards, maybe the next day, and, voila! problem solved.

I like meeting man. I have to attend a whole lot of meetings and don't usually find them all that delightful. Maybe Meeting Man has a secret for enjoying meetings. I'd love to know what it is!

It's Gunnar (not Gunner). I've met him and that's his real name.

Hmmmmmm.....maybe "mtgman" is an abbreviation for Montana G-man, in which case, Mr. FBI agent, get your sorry ass down to Roche Jaune and start dusting for fingerprints.

Agreeing with K.D. Not everyone who uses the fishing access sites are abusing/misusing them. Don't let the wrongs of a few bring down everyone!

I very much doubt the fishermen are the problem. It's the other folks who just like to burn stuff and make messes that are the problem. Some people just love burning stuff and making messes.
