MilesCam is now online.

Hey Everyone, the camera is now online! Your view is from inside of Main Street Grind for now, until we hook the camera up on the roof.

Thanks for watching!

Also, take a look at the all new website!

It isn't just me. I have handled alot, but you must also thank Dean Hanvold of Technologies Plus for supplying the (soon to be online) camera.

Looking good.

Well, not everything is... I'd forgotten how rough MC looks in early Spring. There's got to be enough sand on the streets and sidewalk to build a small beach!

Posted by Josh Rath (+2324) 13 years ago

Cool new features. There are dual cameras, meaning I can switch to the indoor camera or to the outdoor camera at a whim.

Also, go to the Main Street Grind when it opens, and you can literally see how it works! It's all in the open.

Edit: Also, the service I was using (Justin.tv) seemed to have changed a few things since we last used them, and that will not do. I've switched to uStream.tv, which allows for the video to autostart when you arrive on the page, and provides a bit more insight into the video.

If this were 1975, the street would've been full of bored drunken teens, driving up and down main.

Kudos, again, from me too, Josh! You had to persevere through a lot of road blocks to bring this to fruition, and I do like the view.

Let's hope this time it lasts awhile. It was very disheartening when the last webcam location was vandalized...hopefully that won't happen to it where it is now.

One other thing - if you are still seeking donations to help cover the equipment, installation and operating costs, I'll see what I can do in the near future.

Josh I clicked more or less by accident (I have a sensitive mouse pad) on something on the webcam and it opened in a new window with a chat box there was only one post there it just said (anyone here)5:18. Is that something people can use? It would be kind of interesting to see comments there like Oh there is so & so.

Lorin, indeed that is something we can use, but I am choosing to not do it. Reason being is that I would need to have moderators within the chatroom at all times of the day, so we would not have anyone cussing or slandering. If it is a well requested feature, I will enable it.

Ok I think it would be interesting, but I agree probably not worth the bother. I don't know what a moderator would entail but it sounds like it would be a full time job. Maybe there will be a volunteer.

I may be able to install a comment box on the website. I'll look into it, and maybe I'll find one that allows me to see the comment and authorize it first.

Also, Shu. Currently the only things on deck for the MilesCam financial wise is upgrading the current computer for the future, and paying for the $50 a month webhosting cost.

I've covered the webhosting cost so far, but any help would be great. Remember, if you wish to donate click the orange "Donate" button either on the homepage or on the donors page.

I am not sure how it got there but there is now a link to milescam on my facebook page. It is not attributed to anyone, but maybe by me going to the miles cam. Anyway it should generate more interest especially if it goes to every ones facebook that visits the site.

Posted by Josh Rath (+2324) 13 years ago
That would be because you are a fan of the MilesCam on facebook. Since you became a fan, any posts i send out through the page show up in your feed. I included a link to it within that post, thus is why you have a link to the site on facebook.

I understand now. I went to the friends of milescam page and looked through all the members I assume most of them also are mc.commers. I only recognized a few of the names as mc.commers. That leads me to think we have a lot more aliases on here than I thought. A few times I have wished I had signed up with an alias, but usually just when I want to be meaner than I already am, so it is probably a good thing I use my real name.

Okay. I can understand why all the ex-pats enjoy looking at the web cam, but why do I care? But I do. I'm drawn to that baby like a moth to a flame. Thank you RIck Flotkoetter, Josh Rath, and Dean Hanvold.

I hadn't even realized the Bison had been painted. I've got to get out more.

No Problem. The comment box is fully online also.

Edit: THe comment box has a link that says "by HTML Comment Box" which we can remove for 10 dollars. Anyone care to have that removed in their name?

Not that anyone in MilesCity can read this, but here goes anyway.

Midrivers Internet is down, thus the MilesCam is down. Once it has internet restored, it will automatically begin streaming again.

How can I be on here? Verizon Mifi.

Sad when Verizon, a cell company, is more reliable than an internet company.

Technology sometimes goes down? Wow. Who knew?

Power sometimes goes out. Water mains sometimes break. Fancy schmancy technology has problems. This is life.

Oh, look. It is working again.

This is also life.

Sorry for downtime today, since about 2:30 Till now. I went to check on the computer @ MSG and found it covered in Dust, dried soap bubbles, and slid away from where it should have been. So I had to disconnect it, clean everything, burst dirt out of the computer and everything, rewire and turn the machine back on.

Oh, who can we thank for this stupidity? Jerry's Refrigeration. Because they "Weren't told about it" then decided it would be hunky dory to allow dirt and water into a computer, and power outlets. Great Company, no?

They weren't told that sawdust and soap bubbles don't mix well with technology?
Top
Posted by Septimius (+60) 13 years ago
Whoa... I doubt they did it on purpose OR by an act of stupidity. They werent told about it so they didnt KNOW about it.. things happen.

I might just be careful on who you call stupid (yes, the context IS the same). They were hired by the same person or group which agreed to house your computer. They hear what you expressed about them, they just might take it to the person or group they were doing business with.

And that may lead to a burned bridge somewhere.

But I know, we all know... you just don't care what people think of you.

My point is that apparently it didn't occur to them that water + Electricity = bad. Which, for many, will be a great help when choosing a company to do what then need done.

is it down again?
Top
Posted by Josh Rath (+2324) 13 years ago
Apparently so. Seems the internet is down there, because the computer is on a 2 hour battery backup. So it isn't off yet. Planning on ringing midrivers in a few.

Edit: Midrivers says the internet is aok downtown. So I'm clueless. Maybe MSG lost power or something, no idea. When it regains internet or power it will automatically begin streaming.

The Camera is back online. After looking at the battery backup's data, it is clear what the cause was. Not the power. The internet at MSG was down for 3+ hours, and the streamer gave up on trying to reconnect. Hopefully this isn't a nightly thing.

Edit: Sigh. Not.
