This effort has come up over and over again. Each time a few dedicated people work really hard to put it together, then it falls apart because more people don't help and not enough kids take advantage of it. It worked well in the 1940s and 50s when kids weren't so mobile and had to walk someplace and stay there. Since the 1970s kids always have access to cars (or their friends do) and they don't stay in one spot very long. Also when kids have the choice of staying in one spot and being chaperoned or take off and not be chaperoned, they usually chose the later. (They didn't used to have a choice.) They aren't necessarily planning to do anything bad, but they want time away from teachers, parents, and other adults. Then there are those who don't realize they can have fun without alcohol or other drugs. It would be great to have a safe, fun place for kids, but it just doesn't seem to work. Fun2U is coming the closest. People need to remember there are a million things to do around here, unless you just want to be entertained. You have to look around and get involved and not just sit back and whine. Sports, arts, music, theater, 4-H, church activities, volunteer work, projects through numerous clubs and organizations are happening all the time. (Clubs and organizations are desperate for members to help with projects). Look at page 2 of the newspaper any day of the week. Look at other people (kids or adults) who never seem to have a spare moment. Join in!
